Gage Art by: Antonio Fuso Colors by: Peter Dawes Letters by: Shawn Lee Assistant Editor: Carlos Guzman Editor: Andy Schmidt Covers Regular Cover: Art by Antonio Fuso after John Byrne Cover RI: Art by Zach Howard colors by Nelson Daniel Review GI Joe Cobra stood out from IDW’s GI Joe series, shocking and surprising fans, and constantly upping the ante. That never really stopped, and it continues with GI Joe Cobra #12. Both covers are drawn pretty well, and Zach Howard’s cover is a cool retailer incentive. Both are drawn and designed in a way that graphically they stick out. Chuckles has gained the trust of Cobra Commander. This issue revolves around him, and the Crimson twins, Tomax and Xamot. What ensues is a well written, intertwining plot in which Xamot makes moves seemingly unapparent to his brother and Cobra Commander. What I like is that nothing is predictable. This issue comes off as a game of chess with one or more individuals thinking they have the upper hand, when they really don’t. Yet it does this without confusing the reader and without complicating the plot. What this issue does do, is pull off some major events that no one will see coming. Now shock value is nothing new to GI Joe comics, but I think what’s done in this issue, moves the story forward. The death of a major figure in this issue will leave readers speechless, and this death plants the seeds for subsequent storylines later in the year. It’s rather bold of IDW, epitomized on the 2 page spread, on pages 18-19. Being that this is an issue of GI Joe Cobra, the fact that it turned out so well wasn’t surprising. However, the fact that it kicked off 2011 off with a huge bang, literally, was very surprising. This is a great way to kick off subsequent story arcs, and one in which all the creators involved did a great job. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the art. Fuso and Dawe’s work stands out a lot, with Dawe’s colors complementing Fuso’s inks well. Fuso’s inks in particular, lend themselves well to the last page, and aforementioned 2 page spread. The last page reminds me of Jack Kirby’s work, with the bold spot black shading, posture, and angular contour work. I’ve stated before that some of IDW’s pages/covers ought to be made into posters. This issue is no different. The covers for this issue, the 2 page spread, and the last page would make for awesome posters. The 2 page spread is not only graphically designed well, but one that shows that IDW is taking GI Joe where no other comic company has taken them before. Cobra Civil War #0 is a 30 page, kick off point for GI Joe, 3 titles; Snake Eyes, GI Joe Cobra, and GI Joe will start in May. Whether you are a new reader, or an older reader who lapsed, Civil War #0 is a good jumping point for the books. Dixon is writing Joe, Origins will end, as it did not make sense to continue an origin book with the issues going into the 20’s & 30’s. 9 candidates from Cobra will be vying for the position of Cobra Commander. Each title will have 3 covers each, showing the candidates illustrated by Zack Howard. Candidates shown: Storm Shadow, Baroness, Destro, Serpentor, Major Bludd. Whomever kills the most Joes may end up being the new Cobra Commander. 7 candidates but 9 real Cobra players. Serpentor is not one of the 7 candidates but 1 of the 9 real Cobra players. It will be under a year before the new Cobra Commander is decided. Cobra Commander tribute is in April, recapping GI Joe Cobra #12. Mike Costa will be leading GI Joe Cobra as Christos Gage is now exclusive to Marvel. Chuck Dixon is penning Snake Eyes, very excited, and has not felt this way since he started writing Robin years back for DC. He may not be in the other 2 books all the time but he won’t always be absent. Andy Schmidt states that Snake Eyes will not turn into the IDW GI Joe version of Wolverine. Some new characters will be introduced. A Cobra Council is in place, which will decide who wins the competition of who will become the new Cobra Commander. When asked if the new Cobra Commander will have the same look as the previous one, Schmidt answered “no comment”. In Schmidt’s words, the new Cobra Commander “dons a new helmet”. Current plan is that Dixon will continue GI Joe and write the ongoing Snake Eyes. Different villains will be popping up. All 3 books will all be part of Civil War but also have their own different fields, so the books will be distinct. Snake Eyes’ activity in Rangoon will not be revealed at the end of the series’ before the Civil War, it will be an ongoing story. Most loose ends will be tied up/resolved before Civil War. The MASS Device storyline will finally be tied up. There is no push to merge styles between movie, Renegades, toys, et al. The Snake Eyes cover by Gabriel Del Otto(reminiscent of the movie design, and with the Arashikage Clan tattoo on his shoulder), will go to print sans shoulder tattoo. IDW is given leeway to try out new things with regards to design. GI Joe Cobra will still retain the mature tone it has maintained since its inception. Sci fi elements may be toned down in the future. Larry Hama is still onboard for GI Joe A Real American Hero, and the series will still continue. The IDW GI Joe universe is being tied up; readers aren't required to read all 3 titles to know what's going on, but for those who wanted a more tighter universe, and overlap, it's there for them. IDW is mindful of the prices being charged per book and doesn't expect every fan to buy each title per month. Adventures in what? Fighting zombies! The 1st issue kicks off this zombie war with the team of Covert Vampiric Operations(CVO). CVO consists of Cross(team leader), Britt & Bools(vampire field agents), Benny The Smith(head of CVO Occult Scientific Research), and Overmars(head of CVO). It’s a covert team meant to protect humanity against supernatural dangers. In the prologue(which does a good job of visually differenciating itself from what happens in present time) an interdimensional portal to Dimension Z(for Zombie) has opened up within an underground military base in Kirtland, New Mexico. The military sees massive potential in using Dimension Z as a whole new world in which it sets the rules. This, after killing off all the zombies in it of course. However, things don’t work out as planned. Instead of humans going through the gate to Dimension Z, the zombies break through to Earth. Subsequently all hell breaks loose. This is where CVO steps in. CVO is sent in to shut the interdimensional portal down and investigate. Considering that only 4 team members are sent in against an overwhelming zombie hoard, CVO does not have an easy task ahead of them. CVO’s intervention inadvertently(and unintentionally) helps the zombies, which are part of a collective called the Undermind. Now seeing this take place, adds to the excitement of this issue. It comes off as an over the top read. It’s fast paced and unpredictable, I also found it to be humorous. I wouldn’t expect a robot to turn into a zombie but it did happen in this issue. The end of issue #1 shows how the Infestation infests the other IDW series. This issue kicks the series off to a good start. It was a rather enjoyable read, I didn’t know what to expect because I haven’t read many zombie comics in the past, and didn’t know about CVO until now. The artwork takes a graphically bold approach, however I didn’t think the prologue art was as consistent. The idea of a covert team taking on zombies makes for potentially fun storylines. Speaking of a covert team…. GI Joe(or rather, Cobra) makes an appearance, in 1 of the previews at the end of the issue. We see Baroness and Eels aboard a sub off the California coast. They are sent to investigate Joes on a sailboat moving discreetly. Baroness sets the tone for what we can expect(she’s rather brutal), and someone already dies before the end of the preview. Definitely looking forward to GI Joe Infestation #1, which will be released on March 2nd. GI Joe Infestation #2 will be released on March 16th. In conclusion, Infestation #1 is a recommended read. However you might want to read Zombies VS Robots : Adventure, and CVO Volume 1 prior to reading this issue, as they provide insight into what happened prior to the Infestation.
