1) Star Wars has always had a low-tech aesthetic

2) The entire Sail Barge sequence is an homage to pirate movies

So...that's kind of the point.

On that note of ships, here's a model, of what I had in mind for a HasLab toy. If a full ship is too big, maybe a cross section, can fit better in most houses and budgets. People who had the original Flagg complain about room,

Seems to me the lower deck with the mechanical stuff would not need to be visible/accessible.

I don't make figs for monetary reasons and I don't intend to do these as a business of any sort, so I don't have rates. I would make a basic figure for $50.00 but I have some very stringent rules before I'll even entertain the notion, #1 of which is that I do not provide parts.

Mordiganne 03-18-2019 02:35 PM

There's been a bunch of really nice figures posted lately I see. I don't have time to go through them at the moment, but some very impressive works posted lately. Nice to see!

thanks guys so its mostly for expansion on personal collection for you, mordiganne?
id imagine creator would be hard pressed to sell most of the cool customs he cooks up also.i mean look at the deathshead.i love those modular characters you can make improvements and take creative liberties with.

with the tech available today it would be highly possible to recreate a workable version of this with 3d design and printing.what dimensions would you be looking at?

I would say Flagg dimensions, as wide and as tall but deep enough for at least a Quinjet or other fighter to fit on the deck and/or in the hanger. At that scale it would either have to be modular or you would need an industrial size printer.

Also, if the tower and lift engines were optional, you could get 2 or 3 and put them together if you wanted it bigger.

Here's a good read from former Hasbro Toy designer Bobby Vala, who worked on the Marvel Universe line and is about to launch a Kick Starter for a 6inch, military themed figure line. Joe fans are ticked by his scale and name choice for the line, but he gives some interesting insight into Hasbro's choices concerning their Joe and MU lines throughout this thread.

Action Force - 6 Inch Figure Line by Former Hasbro GI Joe Designer Bobby Vala - HissTank.com

But this was a good read when a 'Tanker' got riled up after BV mentioned working on the MU line:

Thank you. My time on Marvel Universe was frustrating. I want to give some feedback to the points you made.

- A) jacked up the price by 25-33% from $10 MSRP to $13 price shock in one year and expected people to STILL PAY when. . . . . .

BV- I had tons of arguments with the marketing team on this point. I thought it was a bad move but with inflation, the cost to produce them just couldn't support a $10 price point. I hated it.

- B). . . . you guys then reduced the quality of the figures by reducing the amount of joints and also cutting costs on designing the left over joints?

BV-Again this was something I fought hard to save. Unfortunately it wasn't my call. I tried to tell them people wont pay more for something that has less.

- C) Then you guys decided to re-name the Marvel Universe line 3 times!!!! With the last sticking with "MARVEL LEGENDS", a confusing name shared with the 6 inch MARVEL LEGENDS so it's MORE DIFFICULT FOR BUSINESS OWNERS TO SELL ON EBAY and AMAZON

BV- Once more I fought this. Why take an established line name and then just change it???

- D) Then decide to make ONLY 2 packs of Marvel Universe/Legends 3.75 without actually increasing the quality of the figures or joint design and expected that to sell better.

BV-Not my call. I designed to what I was given.

- E) Then you guys finally DECREASED the quality of your paint jobs on the figures and make the vast majority of your 2 packs TOYS R US exclusives.

BV-I think there was a factory change at the end so the quality decreased but I don't remember for sure. I just know that my first year I got to do some awesome figures like Deathlok and Deaths Head but when I got Beast out I didnt have the means to make it the way it should've been made. I did what I could.

same, but its a nightmare trying to get the time to sit down to these things.the flag at that scale will cost a small fortune and would definitely be limited release.too much plastic involved.
ive seen guys add their own levels to their flags, one guy on youtube has his on a wheeled base with 2 extra decks.

I read recently that a big part of the original Flagg was cardboard. I also saw a picture of a boy in a swimming pool with his Flagg. These 2 items seem to contradict each other, and I do not know either way myself. That said, a heavy duty cardboard Helicarrier, like the stuff Extremesetz is doing, with some plastic pieces, would be cheaper and easier to make, lighter to move around and easier to store. The downside would be you could not put it in your pool.

There is no part of my flag that uses cardboard don’t know where that came from.

Super Joe 03-19-2019 12:20 AM

A crazy idea for HasLab. Just an uber detailed "Superstructure" as tall / big as the Jabba Barge! As mentioned earlier, customizers have shown how to add to the Flagg's hull. Its not hard to make your own hull,

Wow that's a hell of a score. That Cap and Spider-Man 2099 were actually my last MU purchases.

Thanks for the congrats. I found them at the local Winners. I guess it’s a Canadian subsidiary of TJ Maxx.

They're definitely some of the nicer figures from the twilight of the line. I’m probably going to be putting them all up in my B/S/T thread (excepting maybe Iron Man), though, as I’m in the process of slowly selling off or trading away my 4” Marvel figures, so I guess my good fortune may ultimately be to the benefit of one or more of you guys.

Why would people be mad about either of those?

2: “Action Force” was the British incarnation of the G.I. Joe team back in the 1980s (prior to Hasbro buying out Palitoy) with its own unique and interesting (and sometime endearingly goofy) spin on the the early RAH figures (for example, the 1982/83 Snake Eyes figure became an Icelandic rally-car driver working under the auspices of the SAS, Scarlett became a Swiss diplomat’s daughter, and there was a Canadian maritime operations specialist code-named “Beaver”). The fact that Vala seems to have swiped the brand-named for a totally-unrelated concept has caused a certain amount of irritation.

1: All true RAH aficionados despise the 6” cult with the fire of a million exploding suns.

hasbroherofan 03-19-2019 12:07 PM

Both those seem kinda silly but to each their own.

hasbroherofan 03-19-2019 12:29 PM

Vala also provides an explanation for what happened to Marvel Universe. About what I expected, but still pretty discouraging.

Quote:

I appreciate and respect your point of view but I want to give you some insight so you know the actual facts. Yes, 4" fans are loyal however, there just aren't enough of you out there. It is my favorite scale but the sad truth is that is doesnt sell well. Sure it sells well to the 1500 collectors out there but thats nowhere near enough for a company like Hasbro to support the scale. I worked on Marvel Universe and sadly saw it dwindle down to a shell of what it was. This was because they were too expensive to produce compared to a 6" figure and the retailers didnt want 4". I'm not talking out of my ass here, these are facts. If and when Joe comes back I have a feeling its not going to be what the fans want. Its unfortunate that the 3.75" ARAH days are done and there is no one left at Hasbro that cares about it. Joe will something new and either people will get on board or they wont.
