I also have slacked in my usual Halloween spirit, haven't dug out any decorations yet. This should have been a great year for Halloween, it falls on a Saturday night and everything.

snake5289 10-13-2015 11:34 AM

The closest thing I've done to get into the spirit is talking with some buddies about watching some movies on Halloween night. Not much but it's something I guess. Ash vs The Evil Dead starts that night so there's that too.

CAN NOT WAIT for the series premiere of Ash Vs The Evil Dead! And the NECA figures for it!

Trailer: Ash vs. Evil Dead

I've seen it like a dozen times and that trailer still makes me smile.

snake5289 10-13-2015 02:54 PM

No matter how long it's been since Army of Darkness Bruce hasn't lost a single step.

Too bad it is on Starz. I'll either have to download it or wait for it to come out on BD to watch it.

snake5289 10-13-2015 05:38 PM

I've got the DVR set at my grandparents so I can watch it over there. May even be able to convince them to watch it too.

kylactus 10-13-2015 05:48 PM

I bought the Starz / showtime package on Direct TV for 6 months just for this show, if it's a let down, so help me god I will stalk Bruce Campbell to a con and get my 80 something dollars back!

But if it were on any other channel (besides HBO maybe) then it wouldn't get to be nearly as R-rated as it should be, besides Starz is kinda fast about getting their stuff out on disc. Spartacus didn't take long to get released from when it aired from what I recall.

Oh please, with the way TV is nowadays, it could get away with everything it needs to just fine. It shouldn't be any different than the movies, and that is tame compared to the other crap like Dexter, Vampire Diaries, X-Files, The Walking Dead, etc.

kylactus 10-14-2015 07:56 AM

if I remember correctly in all of the evil dead movies the worse you have is gratuitous gore, and the word shit. that's all network TV is anymore. it's sad that the only good horror movies coming out now are comedy/horror. I love TWD and the Strain, but no one is doing any legit horror at the movies. Me and my wife went to some lame flick about this killer that's picking off a group of people while they Skype, it was beyond boring! 90% of the movie was reading there texts back and forth to one another. It was more reading than Apocalypto! everything in horror anymore are these black and white zombie ghosts that crawl up walls and turn to smoke when you look at them. I demand Hollywood starts cranking out sequels to CHUDS, phantasm, critters, people under the stairs, gremlins, House, hell raiser, trolls, children of the corn. NOT updates! or remakes, sequels!

Dr Kain 10-14-2015 09:02 AM

Hopefully Crimson Peak will fix that this weekend. I don't want any more sequels though, nor do I want prequels and remakes. I want new and original stuff that is actually made with love and care.

Speaking of remakes, or rather reboots, there is supposedly a new Halloween movie in the works that is going to reboot the post-HII timeline again. Why not do something new and do a new timeline that takes place after the original? You know, the one where Michael only went after Laurie because she stepped on his property? How about doing a direct sequel to that and ignore the whole sister storyline?

En Sabah Nerd 10-14-2015 09:03 AM

Critters and Tremors got killed by their sequels, it was just sad. Children of the Corn had too many bad sequels (not that the original is much to poke a stick at) and Hell Raiser as well (though the original is good)...

Remember in Troll 2 when they were actually goblins, why was that movie called Troll 2 if they weren't trolls?

Also who else saw the trailer for the new Friday the 13th video game?

K Dubious 10-14-2015 09:06 AM

I think TV is way better than movies these days. I'm happier this a series. I love the MCU for instance, but I get more enjoyment week after week from AoS than a 6 month to year wait for the next "episode" of Avengers.

I do want the majority of sequels you mentioned, but again I think it would be a bigger win if it were a series.

Does anyone watch American Horror Story? My GF is obsessed with it and it is on FX with so much blood and gore and other adult themes that these series could be on any network I feel.

En Sabah Nerd 10-14-2015 11:04 AM

While cable channels like AMC and FX(X) are making a ton of progress in allowing blood and violence there are still limits and rules. While shows like Breaking Bad have "f*ck" in their dialogue you'll never hear it on air, only on the dvd or online releases. Graphic violence and gore can be permitted but only under set parameters, like a limit to how much blood can be on screen at once and for how long. This is why on shows like the Walking Dead we can see someone start to get torn apart but the camera never sticks to it, they'll maybe cut back to it eventually but still only glimpses. Channels like HBO and Starz are unregulated so they can show whatever they please, while the original Evil Dead movies aren't too hardcore by today's standards this new one could elect in its first episode to be way more violent than all 3 movies combined. Swearing is also precious, I completely expect to hear "f*ck" at least a few times throughout the show.

Frank Richards 10-14-2015 01:09 PM

Has the topic already shifted away from the perceived "decline" of Halloween ?
Oh well, lol, because even though I'm late to the discussion, I have quite a few opinions.

In my area, people seem to be getting very excited about Halloween. Most of my friends are planning costume parties, buying tickets to horror film festivals, and gathering groups to attend haunted houses and/or forests. Meanwhile, my friends with kids are looking into fun and scary activities for their kids to attend. While I haven't seen too many decorations on display yet, that's not uncommon around my area, since most people here typically decorate about 10-14 days before Halloween.
So, here in the deep deep dirty south, Halloween is still a big deal. I'm sad to hear that the spirit of Halloween has diminished in some areas, but I honestly haven't experienced any of sort of decline in the holiday here.

However, I have noticed a huge paradigm shift over the past few years. Even in my neighborhood of young middle class families (with kids and disposable income) no one trick or treats. And, it's been that way for the past five or six years. The families here tend to attend neighborhood or family parties, as well as events sponsored by the community, schools, or churches instead. From what I've gathered from friends and family members with kids, not just in my area, but nationwide, this is the new status quo.
Skoob and Trivial Psychic did a great job of presenting reasons and sharing opinions about these changes, so I won't repeat those same reasons, since I agree with much of what they both said.

But anyways, to be quite honest, and I know I'm opening myself up to some HUGE criticism here, lol, I never cared for trick or treating anyways, and while I recognize that it was once an important aspect of Halloween in the US, I honestly don't mind that the tradition is slowly disappearing.
Don't get me wrong though. I LOVE Halloween. As a child, my parents (uncharacteristically for them) helped me design some impressive and fairly elaborate costumes. However, trick or treating, in and of itself, just seemed tedious and like a waste of an amazing costume. It wasn't until middle school, when the average kid is deemed "too old" to trick or treat (in this region anyways), that I REALLY began to enjoy Halloween. At that point, parties replaced trick or treating, so I was still able to construct an awesome costume, but I then had the opportunity to hang out with friends and show off my costume to my peers, rather than have disinterested strangers feign interest while throwing the requisite bite-sized Milky Ways my way.

A lot of you are lamenting the drastic changes in this holiday, and even perceive it to be slowly fading from relevance, but rest assured, at least here in south GA, it's still widely celebrated. It's just changing, and I, for one, honestly prefer the changes.

EDIT:
DAMN, that's a long rant :p
Sorry, it didn't seem that long when I was typing it !

I heard about it, but since it is online only I have no interest in it.

I loved the first season. Thought Asylum was decent but they tried to do way too many genres with it. Coven started out good but got boringly predictable in the end. I last 5 episodes before turning Freak Show off, it sucked badly!! The only interesting characters were the clown and the prince and they were gone before the show really got started.

Haven't watched Hotel yet.

Hellraiser 3 and Hellraiser Bloodlines (well...at least the first 45 minutes or so of it...) were pretty good, and part 3 was definitely my fave of the series.

I saw the Friday the 13th game trailer this morning, which was essentially the same trailer that I saw for a game called Summer Camp about a year ago (which you can see a homage to in the trailer, as one of the shirts lying on the ground does feature the game's original title.) The Kickstarter for it went live yesterday I believe, and it's already almost halfway there to finishing it's goal. It's got some pretty awesome unlocks at the 100 dollar level and up, and the concept of the game sounds interesting...sort of like a survival horror take on Evolve or Naughty Bear. I'm expecting this game to be a PSN/XBL budget title, but provided that the game map or scenarios are large enough, it could turn out to be fun.

What I thought was rather interesting was that the trailer chose to go with Kane Hodder's look from part 7, leaving me to wonder if there will be other legacy Jason costumes to unlock (which from the Kickstarter page, sounds like there will be) and how they managed to negotiate that, being that Paramount still owns the rights to the Friday the 13th title, while New Line/Warner Bros owns the Jason character. I was certainly expecting the reboot Jason (or a similar version with minor changes) to appear as opposed to a version of him from the original 80's films.

I watched the first four Hellraisers last month and I thought the first was meh, the second one was pretty good, the third was bad, the fourth was just down right dreadful. I've also got 5-7 to watch since 4-7 are on one BD disc, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to watch them.

Well I am a huge Hellraiser fan and 3 and 4 are my favorite because they deal with (3) who Pinhead was before he was a Cenobite and (4) that deals with the puzzle box and it's legacy. 1 and 2 are great for being just bloody and nasty and 2 gives a lot to how things are in hell, but I would not bother with 5-9. Maybe Hellraiser 6: Hellseeker is watchable because Kirsty comes back and tries to make a deal with Pinhead, but the rest were bad and mostly done so the studio could keep the rights.

I got to finally meet Doug Bradley (Pinhead) a couple months ago and he was very cool.

I like how he's said that at the first film's wrap party nobody knew who he was because they had all only ever seen him in costume and so they were all "were you a sound guy or something?", also his voice is great.

Halloween month continues with a look at Toho's 1958 horror crime thriller The H-Man. Is it a solid movie or as toxic as its source?

Freddy's Dead - Was this supposed to be a horror movie or Looney Tunes Featuring Freddy? Good god this movie was just flat out stupid. The only line I actually liked was when the nameless kid is on the bed and says, "Nothing is going to make me get off of this bed!" and it starts on fire and he just screams, "DAMMIT!" before jumping off of it. The whole thing was just so damn stupid and the town just suddenly being abandoned was dumb as all ****ing hell. Now he has a daughter that no one ever talked about? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. It would have been a much more interesting movie had it been that Freddy's powers got so powerful that it affected anyone who was living in Springwood, which would have been a far better reason for people leaving other than just because. I give this pile of **** a 2/10.

New Nightmare - Probably the best sequel in the entire franchise, but still far from perfect. I love how the majority of the actors are playing themselves and how it establishes that Freddy was an actual demon that was trapped in the movies. Unfortunately, the movie just drags on way too many times as it is a good 20 minutes too long. I do like this incarnation of Freddy quite a bit as he looks down right demonic, however, we didn't get enough of him. Also, Heather clearly had her shields turned on because she should have been out when she got hit by that car. Instead, she just gets right back up and runs off like nothing happened. Overall, I give it a 7/10 stars.

Dr Kain 10-18-2015 04:27 PM

Bram Stoker's Dracula - The 4K remaster of ths new Ugly Cover edition is absolutely stunning. There are some truly fine details I never noticed were around before and the new audio track is so much superior than the old one. My god, if Sony had actually used the original poster art for this movie it would be a perfect release. Nevertheless, I've talked about how much I love this movie many times so I'll just leave here with the yearly 9/10 stars.
