I fell in love with this line when I first saw them but I was initially turned off because of the on-line only gig. It wasn't until the TRU MOTUC/DC 2 pks hit store and actually owning one that I had to have these. Especially He-Man being in outlandish comic colors in the 2 pk. I had to have a normal one with his sword. I remember shelling out $50 for the 2nd version of He-man via ebay and it steamed from there. Mt MOTUC collection isn't as big as others, but it is an important part of my collection. Now that He-Man is an everyday item and that right there should show collectors how far the line has gone to.
I am sad to see the line go but at the same time they have gone as far as they could. They need to get rid of Digital River. The fact that Paypal isn't an option alone was enough for me to not want to buy from Matty anymore. Granted I fell financially in my personal life, but now that things got better I really see no reason to buy from them anymore. I will actually spend the few bucks more from BBTS to have the better shipping, paypal options, and customer service. I also feel the line ran out of gas. They made 95% of all the main characters, and I really think that aside from Ram-man I am not that excited about the new figs coming out this year. They would be better off making more characters based on the "The New Adventures of He-Man", an MOTU Movie Masters line (I know the movie sucked but PPL would buy into those easily), and the 2002 series. Instead we are getting more obscure characters and with the price increases ppl aren't as attracted to the line anymore. Just look at the SDCC exclusive this year. It is boring as hell and not worth the price for a no-name generic character. The sub figure is nice looking, but it isn't going to make me sign up for a sub. Not only is it economically feasable for me to get a sub, but if it were there are other lines/brands I'd rather spend my money on. Also, at the end of the day these are toys. It is very hard to get ppl to commit to what is bascially a monthy bill, in this economy. I never bought a sub in the past, and the only thing that stopped me was the fact that my wife would rip my head off and feed it to our cat. I am glad I didn't because the year I came close to buying one I lost my job, and that would have been a harsship just to have some toys. Now they could give a sub at 50% off each item and I still wouldn't buy. The line just isn't as exciting anymore, MattyCollector happened to get in just before ppl were being more money conscience. Toys aren't a realistic priority for a majority of people, and that is even the most passionate figure collector. My friend was a die-hard and even he is contemplating not getting any subscriptions where before he would get 3 subs. That to me says something is isn't right. I know he wasn't happy the month the Star Sisters was sent to his house. That was one major bill according to him, for what were less than stellar figures. The only thing I can think of that could help sales is either make a Castle Greyskull already, or starting making smaller scale MOTUC and focus more on vehicles and playsets for that line and it might even attract a different audience. But even that is a stretch. I'll always have love for this line, but I am not one bit surprised if it does come to an end. It was definitely the best run of MOTU figures since the original, and you have to give Mattel credit for making it this far on such a niche product. |
The main reason I didn't sub this year is mainly due to character selection. (Digital Rivers incompetence is a given.) They need to focus on the CLASSIC characters. Sure they said 2014 was going to be like that but it's too late now. I'm over all these concept characters and am not a fan of POP or NA. I'm a dude, I never collected the She-Ra figures because they were for girls!

I'm sorry, but that is like getting mad at a Best Buy sales associate for asking you if you want a credit card or protection plan just because he has to or gets written up if he doesn't. If you don't like it, you have to take it up with the people that make the company decisions, not the nobodies that are just doing what they are paid to do. Quote:

MOTU was the first line I remember collecting as a child and the MOTUC line is my favorite line to collect currently, which sounds blasphemous to me since I am a Transformers collector/fan first and foremost. Unfortunately I didn’t find out about this line until late 2010 and then only got the obligatory He-Man, Skelator, Battle Cat and Pantro. And then it snowballed into I will only get these main characters, and then the Horde, and then I ended up with pretty much all of them and I decided to get a 2012 sub and re-subbed for 2013. While not a fan of any of the PoP figures the subs were still easy choices for me since my wife loved the She-Ra cartoon as a kid and “helps” take those figures off of me…for free.
Also knock on wood, so far with a sub or any orders I placed with DR I have not had a single issue or complaint against them as many have. |

So many other lines were inspired and came out as a result. |

He had so many accessories, vehicles, and was very versatile... He-Man WAS one of the first toy lines to be supported by a 30 minute animated toy commercial, so I will give you that. But this history lesson doesn't detract from the main problem... All the major characters have been done (exception being Mek-a-Nek and Ram-Man). There is really nothing left to do but the lesser known characters. I think Mattel could put their time and energy into a mainstream new MOTU line. I would LOVE a more proportionate, dramatic He-Man line. Let 4H go wild with the designs. I realize it's a video game and not a toyline, but look at what Warner Brothers is doing with "Injustice: Gods Among Us" ... they took 70+ year old tired designs and gave them a major 21 century upgrade... He-Man could use a facelift too. |
MOTU was cool but not that cool. Who honestly can go back and watch MOTU classic episodes, they are a joke, I mean don't get me wrong I watch episodes with my sons and its fun but I do not enjoy them. But put in classic G.I.Joe or Transformers and I can watch those by myself and still enjoy them. MOTU 200x was so much better than the original, I loved the story lines and animation style, I was sad to see that go.

Years ago, I could not watch the old He-man cartoons. Watching them again on the Qubo Channel, I kind of like them again. For some reason, it's fun to watch them at midnight and She-Ra at 1 AM. |
Characters I'd like to see made :
Two-Bad Extendar Rio-Blast Clamp-Champ Ninjor Blade Saurod Dragstor Mantenna Modulok Tung Lashor Sssqueeze Snake Face EvilSeed Flogg Of course the list can go on and on, I'd love to see MOTUC get the same treatment as star wars, where every character gets made into plastic form....but its not gonna happen. so finish making the original figures and update them to MOTUC form...I would like evilseed and flogg as a bonus. what they should have done was make the figures in the order that they came....first do the masters, then she-ra, then the new adventures characters, and then make some 200x and fan made characters. |
I want at least all vintage MOTU characters that had figures made to be made in MOTUC.
Here a MOTUC Visual Checklist based on the vintage lines: Masters of the Universe Classics from Vintage Visual Checklist My vintage visual checlist for MOTU is here: Masters of the Universe Figures |
I believe there are 3 factors which have put this line in jeopardy, and none of them have anything to do with the great design and sculpts from the 4H. They continue to provide authentic and true-to-vintage figure sculpts that make this collector and fan very happy. That being said, here is my opinion as to why subs have fallen off:
1) Digital River: It took these guys 3 years to get there act together, and along the way, they probably frustrated 90% of people who bought through Mattycollector.com. Their customer service is terrible and I don't appreciate having to deal with people who are halfway across the world, and who do not have an appreciation for the collector. 2) Increased costs and exorbitant shipping fees and tax: I have a hard enough time dealing with figures that cost more than $20. Last year, they upped it to $22 and I could stomach that. This year, $25. See ya! Add that to the unreasonable shipping fees that I pay and the > 8.75% tax imposed on me as a CA resident, and it was simple for me to say 'pass' on this year's sub. If I buy two figs, it ends up costing me close to $70. That's stupid. 3) Quality of subscription: I think many of us have felt burned by buying a full year and really getting only 5 or 6 characters that we really want. As a fan of the original vintage line, I look for the Ram Mans or the Mekanecks of the Masters Universe. Yet, I end up paying outrageously (see above) for characters like Bow, or Slush-Head, or Scott's vanity figure. Trick me once...well you know the rest. I'm not at all surprised that the line is in danger in light of all the comments (including mine) above. |
My 3 favorite characters, Evil-Lyn, Spikor & Stinkor have been made. It can end now.
|
I've loved many figures in the line, but the price creep has kept me from getting a subscription. I also dislike the fact that the only way to "not" miss out on a figure (i.e., taking your chances with the refresh page of doom) is to get a sub.
So if you want to avoid the terrible service by Digital River--get a subscription? No thanks. I'll continue to buy mine ala carte. |
Hmmm... I see Digital River brought up a lot in here... think there might be something to that?
