IT
Maximum Overdrive
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
The Shining
Leprechaun
Night of the Comet

Pretty much anything from the 80s that is kind of horror/comedy, Stephen King movies, and throw in most Zombie flicks... :)

It and Maximum Overdrive are a must see!

I think really though, a lot of the appeal to some, and turn off to others is the 70's Sci-Fi campiness. I'm not a big fan of part 3 (although I have bought it like three times now) but I'd pay to see a Rob Zombie remake.

Why would you want Myers to show up? That was not the point of HIII. The point of the series was to move away from the Myers character (who was never supposed to have a sequel to begin with) and do a yearly anthology of stories, which would have been far better than just bringing Myers back.

If they didn't come in the box set, I would not own either of those pieces of crap Zombie pooped out. The first one was subpar (in fact, it was the first Halloween movie I ever saw), but the second one is just absolute white horse shit.

Also, the Exorcist 1 was great, the rest not so much.

I just cannot get into any movie that deals with exorcisms. I do not know why. I love stories that deal with magick, demons, the super natural, etc, but if you throw in exorcism, you have lost me. I can only suspend my sense of disbelief so much and exorcisms is where my sense goes away. They tend to be over acted, over done, and just flat out stupid.

I liked the remake of part one only because it went more in depth into Michaels childhood and his relationship with Lumis. I thought that was interesting and spooky to see an innocent kid becoming a psychopath for no apparent reason. part two.... I'll just say I've got mixed feelings, especially on the "visions" Myers kept having.

I'm going out today to get the Rec films. It's obvious I've missed something awesome.

I am slightly shocked that with all of the Sci-Fi fan-boys in here no one has put Slither on the list yet! or any of Sam Ramey's work the Evil dead movies! c'mon there must watch! and Drag me to hell is decent (maybe more comedy than horror) but still a good was to burn 90 minutes.

Has anyone seen any of the new Kevin Smith horror movies? I cant remember the titles, but I caught the tail end of a preview, It's got the kid from Dodge ball, and Jeepers Creepers in it....

En Sabah Nerd 10-05-2014 10:46 AM

I'm kicking myself for leaving out The Shining, The Omen, and Hellraiser on my initial post. I've got a lot of love for the old universal monster movies, but those aren't really "spooky movies" when you stack them up to how the genre has evolved.
Shaun of the dead is way more comedy than zombie movie, but what the hell, I'll throw it in.

A few of us, myself included, have already listed the Evil Dead trilogy. Those are some of my favorite movies ever, and I like people less if they don't like Raimi's achievements.
Kevin Smith's new movie, starring Justin Long, is titled Tusk.

3233rafael 10-05-2014 11:20 AM

Now, there are some good Halloween movies that are not scary but that are worth watching like Charly Brown's "it's the great pumpkin" or "hocus pocus".

Halloween (Carpenter) and Halloween (Zombie) are told from Different perspectives the Original is told basically from Lori (Jamie Lee Curtis) or her Daughter's and Dr. Loomis perspectives (Except 3 which had nothing to do with the other) while Rob Zombie's are told from Michaels perspective. As for Halloween 3: Season of the Witch I think that's a movie John Carpenter would like to forget ever got made I've watched it 3 times and always say I will never watch it again. and Dude it's Raimi not Ramey (we all should know this he made Three Spiderman Movies)

kylactus 10-05-2014 12:20 PM

Oh "Raimi" sorry, I'm not an expert on eastern European phonetics.
at least we can all agree that season of the witch was a train wreck. (the kind you can't help but look at once and a wile)

I enjoyed Zombie's first crack at Halloween because it gave us a glimpse into Michael's childhood and motivations. The story felt a bit more fleshed out and I felt it paid a nice tribute to the original film.

Zombie's second one, was one of the hardest movies that I have ever had to sit through. It turned every likeable character into scumbags, featured way too much of his wife looking like she did in the "Living Dead Girl" music video, and the whole white horse metaphor was lame, drawn out, and went nowhere. Add in Myer's unmasking (looking like a beefed up hobo Rob Zombie no less) and the fact that he actually speaks, and it's easily one of the worst sequels in any series outside of the Hellraiser franchise (which has really gotten crapped on through the years.)

I also have to agree on exorcism and "obake" style ghost films. (The Ring, Grudge, etc.) They are just not scary to me. A kid meowing on the ceiling, or walking out of my TV? Come'ere kid...meet my friend Louisville Slugger.

Most "haunting" movies are equally bad. When the "The Conjuring" came out, while people were screaming, I had a look on my face like "seriously?" and I nearly wanted to walk out of the theater by how bad it was.

Exorcism movies I've just learned to stay away from. There's nothing new in any of them...contorting bodies, bleeding from the eyes, stigmata, darth maul eyes, walking up walls....oooookay. Half the time, I end up shaking my head while laughing at how ridiculous they are.

Just like there are a few of us out there that doesn't understand the appeal of slasher flicks, I'm one of the ones that don't get Stephen King. He's had some neat flicks (Misery, Sleepwalkers, Christine) but I just don't find the guy's stuff to be scary. Maybe I'm desensitized...=(

The only one I saw from Kevin Smith was Red State. Interesting film, but hardly a horror film. It's actually just more of Kevin Smith's takes on organized religion that he briefly skimmed over in "Dogma" and the dangers it brings when you add the type of cult fanaticism to it that we are seeing more and more in our world today. More of a thriller, and is kinda underwhelming, but I thought that the ending was fantastic. It comes from out of left field and you never see it coming.

I haven't gotten around to seeing Tusk yet, but I hope to soon.

CMIII 10-05-2014 01:48 PM

Stephen King is more of the does more psychological scare... Meaning the realistic scare I.E. It, Pet Cemetary, Cats Eye (to a point), Cujo, and the Shining He's similar to Alfred Hitchcock and M. Night.

See, that is the problem though, there was no need to see an in depth look into Michael's childhood because:

1. It is obviously not the same thing between Carpenter's and Zombie's. One was a rich kid and the other was white trash.
2. White trash serial killers are cliche and over done.
3. Some people are evil just for the sake of being evil. Not everyone needs a reason to be evil.

I also think Loomis in Zombie's movies was utterly unlikable. I thought Malcom McDowell was going to do a phenomenal job, instead, he turned the great doctor into a selfish, super egotistical, money hungry rat.

Not really, Stephen King's main thing is mystery-monster stuff. I find it astonishing that he made The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (even though the latter two aren't horror) but then makes such mediocre pieces like Children of the Corn, Christine, Pet Sematary, It, Silver Bullet, the Langoliers, etc. How can he make such good dramas, including The Dead Zone, but then pump out so many failures at the horror genre. Was The Shining a miraculous fluke of genius?! I wouldn't compare him to Hitchcock as most of Hitchcock's work is classic and genre defining. I would find King comparable to M Night Shyamalan though as both have had great success, but then also make continuous disappointments.

I have been a fan of King for over 25 years. I know he is not "the god of horror", but what I love about his stories is the in depth character development. The directors of his movies that understand that made fantastic film versions(The Shinning, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Stand by Me, ect). You grow feelings for the characters (good or bad), that draws you into their world.

I've nothing personal against Stephen King, but it does seem he should steer clear of horror more often. Drama is good from King, horror not so much.

3233rafael 10-05-2014 02:37 PM

Best of the worst that we must see... Silver Bullet & The Lost Boys, Corey Haim, lol

kylactus 10-05-2014 02:41 PM

Dr. K,
1.I wouldn't really call the first Michael "rich" just less trashy
2.I think Michael goes beyond "serial killer" (technically he'd be a "ritualistic spree killer" I the point of both movies was that no one saw it coming, there was no stopping or reasoning with him. he's just a wicked force of nature.
3. I agree that McDowell was a let down. but everything Rob Zombie dose goes to the point that the "normal" people are really worse than the misfits and monsters.

King's stuff gets too cut up at times on film. I think a lot of his Ideas are better conveyed in book format. like "It" awesome and scary, great story, great cast, the ending felt like someone took a dump in my dress shoes.

P.S. I f you want an undisputed "king" of the horror/suspense/sci-fi format, for my money without a doubt Rod Serling. 80% of all modern horror movies are directly ripped off of the twilight zone. (and 100% of M. night Shyamalan's twists)

Halloween 6 - Producer's Cut - After a year about hearing how much better this cut is, I went in kind of worried. It did not help matters that at about an hour into the movie, I still saw very little difference in the two outside of the time when Jaime dies. Nevertheless, once the credits started to role I sat there with a grin as what do you know, the Producer's Cut IS really the superior cut. Gone is the stupid laboratory scene in beneath the hospital and that ridiculous pipe battle between Michael and Tommy. The movie actually makes far more sense in the Producer's Cut and its ending is far more satisfying without leaving you with a "WTF?" bad taste in your mouth. The movie is still far from perfect, as in the long run, it is still a bad movie, but it is now at least watchable because it is only slightly boring instead of fully boring. Nevertheless, this cut is vastly superior to Halloween 5, which I did not think was going to be possible. I am so glad I got the set now as I no longer see any reason to ever watch the theatrical cut again (of course, I might still watch it tomorrow just so I can freshly compare the two). Overall, I give this version of a crappy movie a 5/10.

3233rafael 10-05-2014 05:34 PM

The one movie that's on almost (except one) everybody's list on this thread is Halloween. Of course the name of the movie has a lot to do with it but the movie itself does not disappoint.

Poison Shadow 10-05-2014 06:04 PM

I was much more into horror movies when I was a kid. I'll always have a soft spot for them, though, because they played a key role in developing my interest in writing.

There are a few that I watch every year around Halloween time. Carpenter's The Thing, Halloween 2, Halloween H20, Blair Witch project. (I second the notion that BWP is infinitely better than Paranormal Activity, those movies are so mind-numbingly boring that they are completely unwatchable to me) Sometimes I'll watch one of the Chucky movies, if only to laugh at my younger self, who was absolutely terrified of dolls because of those movies.

The original Dawn of the Dead is an absolute classic. Snyder's remake is a total PoS. I love the Evil Dead series, even the latest one... despite the fact that I was originally against its existence in the first place. VERY excited about the potential tv series.

The Conjuring and Sinister are two recent horror movies that I've come to enjoy. The home movies in Sinister were legitimately horrific, and I'll never forget the opening scene. The Conjuring wasn't all that creepy to me, but I found it to be very enjoyable and also made for a good tribute to the Warrens.

As for non-horror Halloween movies, my yearly rituals also include watching Hocus Pocus and the HalloweenTown movies if Disney channel decides to show them. There was also an ABC Family movie where Christopher Lloyd was killed by an avalanche of pumpkins, and for the life of me I don't remember the name. I haven't seen it anywhere in years, but it was on my shortlist for a couple of years there.

...Well, there are a few scattered thoughts on the subject.

En Sabah Nerd 10-05-2014 06:46 PM

I also find myself replaying some horror games around Halloween. Silent Hill 2 has become a regular part of my Halloween horror binge. Even though they aren't exactly 100% horror I also usually play Bioshock and Batman Arkham Asylum.
