Thats cool...did they announce the other 3 episodes too? I'm hoping they do an episode devoted to super hero figures They can pass through a couple of phases with that one...70s mego, 80s Kenner/Mattel and the birth of Toybiz.

Just Star Trek? Why not Mego in general?

iLLest 01-19-2018 11:46 PM

Didn't want to watch the Barbie one but the rest are good. I hope they make more.

The Barbie episode, unfortunately, kind of went off the rails in short order. Where the others were fun retrospectives on the genesis and early successes of the brands in question, the Barbie crew wasted a lot of running time droning on about how empowering and culturally important the dolls were, in a style that would’ve better suited a first-year lecture in Women’s Studies (to the point of bringing in an actual academic to comment). I’m not sure if that spin was more the result of genuine narcissism or Mattel’s ongoing psy-ops campaign to defend the brand against accusations of “lookism” and “fat-shaming” or whatever, but it certainly made the anecdotes that the He-Man design team related about their counterparts in the Barbie division so easily getting their noses out of joint that much more compelling.

Missing out. Former Mattel bigwig has the tackiest “art” behind her... a chair with a nekkid spreadeagled woman... as an art piece. My wife and I spent the whole episode mocking that statue.

Star Trek spans MANY toy lines and companies... also it revolutionized the tie-in industry.
Playmates was the first to scan the actor’s likeness for a mass release toy line with the next generation toys, making the toys some of the best action figures compared to contemporary lines.

My dad was addicted to the line. Had all the variants, the ships, etc.

The woman depicted on the chair is actually her lol I guess its supposed to be some high concept portrait a bored, rich person would get.

I believe TNG line was also the first to play up to the collectors market by numbering the figures, if I'm not mistaken.

lol - lookism.

Toys are like movies in a way - fantasy. If they made toys that looked like most people I'm not sure there'd be much appeal to buy them. Those toy companies would probably have the same fate as TRU.

Think you are right. Can't think of any figures prior that numbered figures. I remember my Father looking like a moron digging through the wall of figures at TRU looking for the smallest numbers of the figures he collected. One was sub 100 (think it was 00097 or something like that) and he had blue Data, silver eyeband Geordi, and two or three Diana Troys - I think the headbands were different colors or something.

We had two walls of a room COVERED with the figures. When the show ended, my dad sold them all, then started collecting Toybiz Marvel heroes.

***Update***

May 25th, season 2 .............Transformers, Hello kitty, Star trek and Lego

Tomax 05-26-2018 09:05 AM

Ok saw 3 episodes of the 4 and just 20 mins of star trek (not into star trek) they were good but there was 2 things that i didnt like. first, they dont give enough credit to Go Bots, they should have showed more respect to that line, they even made fun of them. Go bots fans like myself wont like that. the show is trying to hard to be on the "popular" side. the second thing about the series after 2 seasons that i notice is that they try too hard to be constantly funny. it becomes alittle annoying after some time. i understand being funny on a documentary but they do jokes back to back. reminds me of that show called: 2 broke girls, which suffers from the same.

deecee4 05-26-2018 09:53 AM

I didn't see it as a piss take on GoBots as much as they were just stating the facts. They did feel cheaper and flimsier with relatively simpler transformations and a more kid-friendly cartoon series compared to Transformers.

MeLikeJinx 06-10-2018 07:19 PM

OMG. IMO the Transformers episode was so good... I was pretty much crying like a baby at the end when it got all sentimental. LOL. And I don't even really like Transformers either... I mean not really. I like Joes best, but Transformer's: The Movie is still the greatest cartoon ever... I still remember coming out of the theater with my cousin and his older sister who took us... and we went to a pool party right after and I was all jacked up talking like Blur. Haha.

I'm surprised that Beast Wars did well though... I remember thinking at the time... what the heck did they do to Transformers.
