Mikey seems to be armed with a pair of flails. Teenage Mutant Medieval Turtles!
Hard passes on these. Playmates puts out garbage anyway and garbage renditions of garbage designs isn't getting a cent from me. But I've already accepted that I'm just not the audience for Playmates' figs or for this new cartoon, so no big deal. |
I hope this show does impossibly well and permanently changes the course of TMNT designs forever. Much better than the clone turtles we've been stuck with for the longest time.

Honestly, the designs really aren't that bad. It's really different, but I think that's the point. TMNT has been more or less the same format for decades. I was never really into TMNT except for the Next Mutation and the 2003 series, but I feel like this is a nice change of pace and I have a strong feeling that this is really going to resonate with kids on all fronts.
Besides, aside from playmates usual quality, these figures look good if not decent enough. I don't mess with playmates, I only deal with NECA smaller scale offerings, but I can see kids gravitating towards these on the shelves... and eventually collectors too. |
Cleaned up thread. Sheesh...

I don’t know everything about weaponry, please remind what weapon has a nunchuk on one side and a boxing glove on the other? lol That is so goofy! They aren’t even trying.

now I've gotten my jokes out of my system ...
Mikey without a belt, looks like he's got no pants. How is a scimitar a ninja weapon? I really liked TMNT 2012. I expect to not be even checking out this show. |

The vehicles look cool, and kinda dig the foot soldier redesign.
|
Well...The foot ninja design is kinda cool...I guess...Splinter looks like a long lost Hanna Barbera character, like he'd be more at home in Hong Kong Phooey.
Yeah, I can't help but get the feeling that this is a case of trying so hard to design something to "appeal" to a perceived demographic that you end up using as little actual creative thought as possible...The fact that Raph is the leader says to me that this is made by those 80's kids who would argue that he was the leader because of the Partners in Kryme song...I guess now is their time. |

They look similar, but he appears to be called an Origami Ninja "Confetti Commando" So make of that what you will. |
I really dislike the design and concept for this new era of Turtles. As for the toys they look dreadful in prototype - but just wait until Playmates leaves half the paint deco off them.

... I'm gonna go watch my 2003 Turtles. This is pathetic.

Meh. Still better than the Jim Lee Image Turtles, though.

I ignored the first Nick series and can't say I consider myself a big TMNT fan anymore. That said, there's a part of me that will always like the characters. The people responsible for this trash are clearly on a mission to kill that part of me.

"Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reimagines the characters in a fresh new way, featuring jagged-shelled Raphael as a snapping turtle, wielding twin tonfas as his weapons; Leonardo as a red-eared slider, using an ōdachi sword; Donatello as a soft-shell turtle, sporting a tech-bo staff; and Michelangelo as a box turtle, arming himself with a kusari-fundo." But notice all the weapons have an "energy glow", so I'm sure they're super weapons. |
Oh hey look, the TMNT have two toes again!

This new version looks like it's perfect for the younger kid demographic, and I'm sure kids will likely enjoy it, and the story will probably surprise with how it innovates the franchise and grows the characters. And if it tanks, then they can always work in a CG Mikey stinger at the end and say it was cause he ate a bad pizza late one night. But you know, after so many iterations of the turtles from super anime armor to capes and tights, to even buff superheroes with sharp angular masks, doing something completely wacky that still has that sense of family and growth is likely to be interesting. And even at the start of the CG series, there were people worried about the number of toes, the weapons being "wrong", and more, yet it really did turn out to be one of the best TMNTs done yet. So while it may not be the TMNT I prefer, I'll give it a shot to see if it's a fun watch, and who knows, maybe kids really will love it. Laser weapons, and colorful striking imagery, and the right kind of subtone including more emphasis on don't judge by appearance, as well as brotherly growth and Raph looking out for his brothers and whatever other character growth it could have, this could be interesting. Though I do gotta admit, this April is definitely one of my new faves already, but Kunoichi April was awesome too. This one has so much character and attitude in the design right from the get go that she looks fun. Quote:

I started off hating these, but the more I look at the close up pictures the more they are growing on me.

Besides, Playmates Toys will probably leave the paint off the face anyway;) |
