I picked it up and it's fantastic, and very different than previous releases. A lot of similar names and scenarios, that were eventually changed when the final novella came out, and then when the movies were made. The opening is way more expanded and would be very different when adapted.

The John Carpenter Thing rights apparently reverted back to the writer's estate as copyright law allowed. The studio can still license the movie for re-releases (as seen with Scream Factory and Arrow video). But no all-new merchandise can be created without getting a license from Universal Studios, Bill Lancaster's Estate, and any actors you want to make figures of. Not impossible, of course. But I bet that it's pricey.

If anyone can do it, It's NECA! Now, whether or not they wanna bother is a different story....

I'd heard of the Frozen Hell thing a couple months ago, but apparently there's an interview with John Carpenter from yesterday where he talks about a reboot like it's the first he's heard of it, so I wasn't sure if Frozen Hell was ditched in favor of something else, if two reboots were being made, or if Carpenter was just confused haha

I think he was being coy. But all the trades were treating the Frozen Hell news as "The Thing Reboot".

They better not rooster it up the usual stuff that has been permiating movies these days. I mean i get they’ll likely upgrade the tech and stuff and thats fine but there better be macready and no race or gender swaps. I mean both the white guy AND the black guy lived......and back in the day that was unheard of. :)

I mean, they survived to the credits, but clearly froze to death. Adding any women to the mix wouldn't be unheard of, considering the Howard Hawk's 1951 film features women in prominent roles.

Wait isn't the 2002 game technically canon? (spoilers for an 18 year old game) Macready is alive at the end!

Im all for having women in the film so long as they arent lazily renamed characters and are new characters like in the prequel ( which i didnt care too much for just cause it was once again open ended ). And this time dont hurt the dogs. Maybe instead have new humans get infected instead of dogs. I hate it when animals get killed, unless its snakes. I hate snakes.

And we don’t know that mac n childs died. Logically yah they most likely didnt make but hey if tom jane and ll cool j can survive genetically enhanced sharks then im sure kurt and keith could survive the cold.

I don't think so. At least not anymore. Same with the Dark Horse Comic where he lived. Those were both "official" but didn't line up in any way to each other. In a planned 2005 TV series sequel (which got cancelled as it would have been crazy expensive), both he and Childs are found dead.

Years ago, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando had a haunted house based on The Thing. It followed the events of the movie. The creators of the haunt even hid some easter eggs that specified that Childs was infected at the end of the movie. Just fan service really. Not really canon. But cool nonetheless. It also aligned with the PS2 game Black Arbor mentioned. And while I haven't played that game since it came out, I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time.
