Again until you listen to everyone, you learn nothing.

My grandfather, whom passed away at age 95 in 2019 was a great inspiration to me. I remember one time I was talking to one of the older farm workers, who lived in Alabama for sometime, and I listened to him for 2 hours. I never spoke. I learned so much stuff, about gardening, hunting, race....so much. I told my grandfather I didn’t get a word in with him, he said “ you don’t learn anything by talking”. I took that to heart, I listen a lot more. Even when I disagree with it.

Talking to each other, listening to each other is amazing. I find every single person on this forum to be unique and love all the different ideas from toys to movies and in between. I never block anyone, because I always want to read thoughts on subjects.

You would be surprised how much we all have in common, just by listening.

Even, you Thor laserpunch. Your name says it, I know when I see you post....someone or something is about to get laser punched.

Dr.Kain, as soon as a Godzilla thread starts, I can’t wait to see how you find the most tiny detail in error....then I see nothing but that.

Hey, I consider myself a student of human culture, but I look out on a sea of primates walking around with their heads up their smartphone's ass with no awareness, blissfully ignorant of anything that doesn't impact them significantly and in the present or immediate future. And many of them are stupid on top of that. And a few of them are batshit crazy on top of that. I find peoples' motivations fascinating, but I don't need to grab the "The End is Nigh" sign guy on my street so I can listen to his story over a cup of joe. Most stories turn out pretty much as you expect, and some folks just have a plain ol' shitty way of telling them.

See, now, this is true and why a good thing for white folks to do in the wake of BLM is to maybe just shut up and listen for a change. Maybe if more middle-class/poor white folks would listen to middle-class/poor people of other ethnicities &etc, they'd discover they actually have more in common with them than they do rich white folks/rich folks in general. They try to keep us divided along racial, religious, cultural, sexual and gender lines so we don't notice the real harmful division is an economic one between the rich and the rest of us.

Gina Carano posted the following ill advised tweet:

“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

The umbrage taken is over the fact that she is using a historical instance of genocide to make an obtuse and strained (at best) political point. Estimates place the number of Jewish deaths during the Holocaust at nearly 6 million lives lost. To allegorize the "plight" of MAGA supporters to a real (not perceived) tragedy of epic proportions kinda offends a great deal of people - myself included and I'm not Jewish, for the record.

Now this wasn't Gina's first gaffe; not even her first with anti-Semitic flirtations. She previously tweeted an image that offered support for the conspiracy that rich and powerful Jewish men control the world - complete with one of the pictured individuals seemingly holding a dreidel (or maybe giant blue diamond, potentially equally offensive). This image was an obvious homage to a prominently displayed bigoted mural from England circa 2018.

Regardless of whether you believe her intentions to be misinformed, misconstrued, misguided, or straight up racist, that's just too many instances of abject stupidity/poor judgement for a huge entertainment conglomerate with a worldwide presence to countenance. So, they fired her.

Not that Dr. Kain and I are besties, but he summated the facts pretty well..

Thor Laserpunch 02-13-2021 11:10 AM

@BlueMarvel thanks, and you highlight the main thing with Gina Carano is that, like so many others, her perspective is poisoned by who she is and how history has been painted to her. To this point, I was listening in on this guy's conversation at work where he invoked the plight of his ancestors: "Nobody talks about the Irish slaves." Yeah, cuz there weren't any, fuckhead. How do you close the gap with someone who doesn't have the same understanding of a simple word like "slave" as it is shared by the rest of us.

Archangel 02-13-2021 11:11 AM

Empathy is something that exists, even on the battlefield. Social media has eroded our ability to listen to each other. The anonymity lends itself to trolling for shock value. Find common ground or agree to disagree. Fighting for the intellectual high-ground from the side of tribalism is fun though, but if no one is truly listening to the other side and seeking decorum, it’s just a never ending pissing match.

I actually rather like having this page and discussion! Disagreements are too quickly stamped out around here because people get too hot-headed, but if everyone plays somewhat nice If like to see respectful debates (wishful thinking admittedly...)

hasbroherofan 02-13-2021 11:26 AM

Playing along with delusions only leads to things getting worse. When someone starts spouting conspiracy level crap I immediately lose any interest in talking to them. We're at a point now where people have lost relatives to delusional cults like Qanon because of crap like this, so forgive me if I'm not shedding any tears over one actor's stupidity getting them canned.

TheBlueMarvel 02-13-2021 11:44 AM

@ Laserpunch

Yes, toxic narratives in the states run long and deep. I would have acknowledged your coworker's telling of history, but I would have also offered a clarification about differences between indentured servitude vs chattel slavery and the cultural experiences moving forward from emancipation and the post-Antebellum south.

Isn't this very comment an attempt at an "intellectual high ground?" Is not your incredulity when asking what Gina did to offend masses a direct example of the very "tribalism" you seek to decry? Where is the empathy for people who've grown well tired of insensitive remarks/perceptions such as the ones Gina authored and visited upon the world unsolicited?

I think it interesting that you have often chided me on the Marvel thread for offering discussion of matters such as these, then, when I answer you sincerely in what appears to be a 'proper venue', you seemingly sidestep dialogue all while lamenting some absence of civil discussion.

Have I said something to offend you that makes you want to speak only in an indirect fashion? Do you have an opinion about my answer to the question you posed?

I wasn't attacking you...I was answering you.

I'm of two minds on the subject. While I certainly agree that you shouldn't have to teach people how to love and respect others and not be a turd, if someone's crummy beliefs and behaviors come from a place of ignorance, cutting them off or "cancelling" them just pushes them further into a victim complex and has them double down on beliefs. If there's even a chance of helping someone be better, I wanna try!

I didn’t know about the other instance, and haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. If she had a prior history, and Disney told her to lay off it, she deserved it. There is an ounce of truth in that tweet. Sowing hatred for any group, racial, political, or religious is a dangerous road.

There is selective outrage with stuff like this. Look at some of the comments Ice Cube has made over the years. Nick Cannon was kind-of punished for his comments, still kept most of his jobs. I know he went on a “apology tour”, but I somehow doubt Gina would get the same treatment if she even went that route.

I agree wholeheartedly about sowing hatred of any sort, without a shadow of doubt.

I also don't excuse Cube or Nick for foolishness, so we agree there too. However, how do we know Gina, if she was sincerely contrite, couldn't redeem herself in the eyes of the masses? As JkrSmkrMdntTkr mentioned, Gunn worked his way back into the fold...

They're punk asses too, but she has no cachet other than being "big warrior lady" in a couple things, but also consider the severity of their missteps... Not to put too fine a point on it, but you mention empathy and in the same breath are defending a person who equates getting moderated on Twitter to being one of the 6 million Jews who were interned under inhuman conditions, gassed, and turned into soap. Perspective: get it.

I think her point was more that the government, in conjunction with the masses, ostracized and normalized hatred of Jews to the point that the Holocaust was even possible. Nazi’s didn’t just decide to commit genocide one day. I think it was more of a commentary on how the government made it possible, rather than the actual abhorrent action.

But like I said, if she had a history of dabbling in this like Blue pointed out, and Disney told her to stop...she deserved it.

There needs to be a social and political forum on this board. I’ve thought this for a loooong time. We used to have one on the other board I lived on...it got heated in there due to lack of moderation, lol.

This is moderate "both sides"-ism at its most childish and irresponsible. When you tolerate intolerant views, you normalize them. Disagreeing with people isn't the same as using a public platform to espouse misguided beliefs, rooted in hate and intolerance.

Do you believe the voices of Klansmen need to be heard? Sure, the quote sounds harsh, but social pressure is one of the most effective weapons available when it comes to combatting things like racism. If you let hate get comfortable, it spreads. Just ask Facebook and Twitter.

But the hatred started the conditions. I refuse to hate anyone. The severe punishment Germany took from the treaty of Versailles is what lead to the rise of blind nationalism there. If you don’t try to understand the mistakes of history we keep repeating them. Lyndon Johnson said “If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." I see neighbors call on group gatherings, masks and question if my trip to Walmart is necessary. We are setting up a dark future.

Honestly, I never new nor did I care what her politics were until Disney brought this attention on her. She now has a bigger voice. Disney has the right to sever ties with anyone for whatever reason. Private companies can do that.

I have never see this amount of tribalism in my life. I hope we can get through this, but the world as a whole is a powder keg ready to blow. It just seems to be waiting for the right spark.

With covid crippling this world, destroying children’s development and making cabin fever a scary idea than ever, I shudder at what comes next.

But, I still have hope. Hope in all of us.

Everything in our bodies were created by super novas. We are literally Star children. We are always looking for something, in the heavens, deities something to set us apart, in the end maybe all we have is each other. No matter when or where you live, how you look or act, we all came from the same stars. We are all connected. That gives me hope.

There are certainly some bright and capable minds on this board. Plus I think at the end of the day we all have a shared kindred for small plastic people that binds us together, despite our barriers.
