Really well done. Jumped right over to BBTS.
|
And preordered. Now if I could just find that damn color version Frankenstein already.
|
Best Wolf-Man ever!!!!
As soon as I see him at Target or Walmart I'll definitely be grabbing him. |
This looks really impressive, love how we get a Lon Cheney Jr. head and those swappable parts. I do think the faces on the wolfman heads look a little weird, something seems off with the paintjob. It's been a long time since I've seen the film though.
|
I haven't seen the movie since, uh... well, it was VHS, but I recognized LC Jr. right off the bat so that's a plus in the likeness category!
|
I think part of the reason a lot of people are finding the face colors on the wolfman heads to be off is because the movie was in black and white so there's a lack of direct reference for what it should look like in color. Looking at previous toys seems to be the main reference and there you encounter inconsistency. Diamond made their Select figure's face a darker color to match the fur but then Mego gave him a lighter face. The colored posters are also unreliable for a solid base since they're also inconsistent and often vibrant.

Like I had these old Universal Monster figures when growing up and the Wolf-Man figure had him with a red shirt, so I always just assumed it was red only to learn years later it was apparently green. Man I miss those four figures. A shame my brother stole them as I would have loved to take pictures of them next to the NECA ones. |
The weird mustache is really throwing me off. It just doesn't look right. Everything else looks great. But Wolfman is my all time favorite Universal Monster so I'm a perfectionist on him. But even still, I'll probably be buying two, one to have as Wolfman and one as Larry.
|
Even when there's concrete reference the real colors would still probably look wrong to most people, for sure. I mean, how many wouldn't be taken aback by a Bride of Frankenstein that was a redhead with white streaks?

Then again, Neca isn't always accurate with colors even with reference photos. Case in point, Jason Lives grey skin being painted brown for some reason. |

You know, there's a lot of leeway in the exact hue (as it was never meant to be seen in color) as long as you get the value right, and that face is way too light compared to the fur :/ |
Looks good to me. Passes the eyeball test. Any colour inaccuracy I can touch up with some acrylic paint. Hopefully we finally get a good Bela Lugosi figure
|
Actually, seeing NECA go that far with Larry has me hoping they're going to do teh same with Imhotep and have him come with a robe that can go over his body with an alternate head that has his hat.

Hello! I'm new here and I wanted to ask: Why is NECA predominantly releasing the Frankenstein figure in B&W (with the color version being a rare exclusive) but Wolf Man in color? I'd be a lot more excited for this line if there was consistency there.

It's neat, but I'm glad they are doing color versions (which is not truly exclusive or rare) as there's not much you can do with B&W versions. |
I see. Personally I'd prefer the B&W versions but if that's the case, why can you only order the B&W Franks on DD, EE, and BBTS?

Do you have a B&W personalized shelf made for it that has gray colored glass around it on all four sides? I'm just generally curious, not trying to be a dick. If it's just for photos, you can easily just turn the B&W filter on your camera to take B&W photos, which is what I plan to do. |

I would LOVE to have that shelf/screen. But no, I prefer the B&W versions because that's how the movies are. It feels like more honest interpretations of the characters, not someone's approximation of their color designs. It's why I was so delighted when they debuted the B&W Frank pics first. I thought it was really bold of them to do that for the whole series but alack.
I'm sure we'll get B&W versions of these down the line to some capacity like how they're releasing NES/SNES versions of the TMNT line. Until then, though, I shall bide my time and maybe save some money (wishful thinking). |
For me, B&W is what I associate most with these characters, and thus why I prefer it. The Universal Horror films, being in B&W was part of their overall style, and I think made them more memorable. Same for the RKO based Kong.
Now for the Metaluna Mutant being in color, it almost seems more fitting as 'This Island Earth' was quite the visual spectacle and the color added it it. That film and Forbidden Planet would both have suffered for bein in B&W. |

Whereas the Gill-man would suffer from color. Yeesh, those lips

Woof, yeah, no kidding. And wasn't Karloff's Frank makeup, like, brick red? My favorite of the Universal monsters is the Bride (which I will buy in whatever color pattern they release her in) and I'm VERY interested to see what they do with her. For lack of a B&W version, I hope they do the violet skin she was rumored to have on set.
