This basically changes everything for me and I'm officially pausing all of my Mcfarlane purchases until we see what they put out as DC Direct.

Could you tell me more about the magic beans? Do you have anymore magical vegetables? Any magical fruit?

Well beans ARE the magical fruit.

I always heard it that they were the musical fruit, but maybe that word changed based on region and/or the time you first heard it.

I thought they were the MUSICAL fruit? Maybe magical musical? I'm cool with that.

Just depends on what kind ya eat and how well you can be….ahem…”musical”. ;)

DANZ 07-27-2021 03:34 PM

Yes, you are right. Fruits have seeds. So I should have asked for magical vegetables lol.

Anyway this is a great fit. DC Direct did a lot of statues and until relatively recently, that's essentially what a lot of the McFarlane figures were (not shading the line, just pointing that out). So far that's something McFarlane Toys hasn't really tapped into with the DC toys, so there's some fertile territory there.

MPT 07-27-2021 06:55 PM

I'm cautiously optimistic. I have yet to see something DC-related from McFarlane that rivals what NECA has put out over the years that is DC-related. For instance, the latter has always used multi-purpose cloth capes for its caped figures, but the former has yet to.

digger318 07-27-2021 08:40 PM

that's great for people hoping for more animated series figures...

but as mafex has picked up the line... i think i might be in all in with mafex.

OriginalFire 07-27-2021 11:15 PM

Jim Fletcher is still part of DC Direct so hopefully he will be helping out.

OriginalFire 07-27-2021 11:19 PM

This is an interesting interview from about 2yrs ago with McFarlane and Jim Fletcher. They seem to have a similar thought process

Well this made sense for DC Direct, I was puzzled why they were still releasing things when they were shutting things down and then giving McFarlane Toys the license. Makes financial sense, McFarlane Toys flexed their muscles, tackling multiple licenses and more importantly pumping out figures for shelves at a good rate especially even during the pandemic.

Agree for things like statues its an ideal fit but for the figures I'm not totally sold. McFarlane put out a 7" animated Batman which I wasnt that wildly impressed. It didn't have that quality compared to that MK11 Spawn and a few other releases. I hope he steps up his game to putting a better improved product out there as well as expanding on DC lines he's started. I am going to continue to be cautious considering he's going more mainstream big company strategy than one of a "mid premium" one like NECA/Super7/etc.

As long as we
A. Stop getting countless versions of Batman stuff
B. Keep the line 7 inch the way DC collectors had for years and years, before the nonsensical 6 inch line came in, I'm not fussed about McFarlane taking over.
At least his line has meant Australian DC collectors aren't paying Ebay scalper prices the way we were under mattels shocking lack of distribution.

... Pretty sure DC Direct started out at a rough 6" scale ;)

Yeah. They started out at around 6". Then, in 2005, they grew to 7". It wasn't until Icons and B:TAS that they skewed smaller with those lines.

They didn't stay 6" for very long at all. I remember being so frustrated that I was forced (essentially) to sell my Vixen, Donna Troy (Troia version), Elongated Man, Black Lightning (bald headed version), Martian Manhunter, and Power Girl figs as they were too large to stand next to my Legends. Beautiful figures, for sure.

This is the closest we will likely come unless Mattel pulls off a serious magic trick. Sad too, they were getting it together toward the very end. As their WWE line demonstrates, they've moved several steps forward in balancing functional articulation with appealing sculpts. They don't seem to need 4H anymore to make something cool looking, but they ran out of time to pull everything together for the DC license. I REALLY wanted that Mammoth Collect and Connect wave. The Black Canary, Hawk Girl, John Stewart, Simon Baz, and even that Aquaman (Thrones of Atlantis? I was never sure...) all looked great and, of course, Mammoth was off the chain. I still search for those protos on eBay every so often to see if I get lucky.

The Aquaman that they showed but never released was based on Flashpoint. Some of Mattel's final DC figures were pretty nice (Starfire, Alfred, and Kingdom Come Supes for example) but then others felt evident that since they knew they were losing the license they just half-assed things (Target exclusive Poison Ivy).

Ohhh, yes, that Poison Ivy was terrible and I didn't buy as a result. Conversely, that Beast Boy was INSPIRED. Sure the face was a little cartoony, but all around, that was a very solid effort that portended good things regarding Mattel having figured (heh) things out. I also wanted that translucent Ray variant, which I also search for protos floating on eBay.

Batman stuff and Batman stuff and more Batman stuff. Everything is going to be Batman related because he is the only character in the DC universe.

I'm still pissed Mattel fucked around with the license and never gave us a completed New Teen Titans team and all of the classic Flash rogues.

I partly blame Todd for having a Batman fetish and I blame DC at the same time for just making Batman comics and nothing else.
