Not that great looking, but I've been wanting to add some Star Trek to my retro collection so I guess they'll have to do until someone comes out with a highly detailed and articulate 6" line.

There are plans for more Princess Bride figures.

And thanks to the hip articulation they won't be sitting spread-eagle! That always frustrated me about the original figures.

deecee4 01-24-2022 04:36 PM

Will definitely be picking up those Wrath of Khan figures.

Raine24 01-24-2022 04:52 PM

Oh... darn. I've got enough phasers and Enterprises that those two looking like trash isn't a disappointment, but for the figures I was 100% prepared for two possibilities:

1) a new 6" line to go with modern figures
2) a revisit of the 4.5" line to update and round out the OG collection

And we got neither. What other line nowadays is 5"? I genuinely don't know, is there a comparable toy line that these are supposed to match up with?

IceConvoy 01-24-2022 04:53 PM

Yeah the five inch size is interesting. I do have some Doctor Who figures that can display with these if nothing else.

I’m probably more interested in the Enterprise and any ships that might follow.

BagJo 01-24-2022 05:07 PM

I guess I'm one of the few that's happy with this scale, as these will go nicely will the OG playmates figures I already own. It'll be nice to have a Riker that's not stuck in a weird pose. I'll definitely get some of the Next Gen figures, maybe the Wrath of Khan stuff too.

That's what I wanted these for as well, which is why I'm disappointed: these aren't the same size as the '90s Playmates figures, they're taller :(

User897 01-24-2022 05:22 PM

I was hoping that the discovery crap would have been cancelled by now. Such a trash show. Only the good things die young, while the bad linger on.

With that inaccurate electronic Enterprise, that seals the deal that DST have lost the ship license and they still refuse to say anything about it. Chuck & Co. are too focused on making money from gentle giant to care.

I definitely look forward to hearing and seeing more. I hope Playmates is prepared this time and it doesn't become a negative thing for them all over again.

"Only the good things die young" is pretty ahistorical when it comes to Trek shows, pretty much everything after TOS is kinda shit for the first season or two and then gets better after that

It's close enough to mesh. It's like comparing the Return of the Jedi/Power of the Force figures from 1983-1985 with the less detailed 1977-1979 Star Wars ANH figures in the vintage Kenner line. They still all fit together consistently, even though sculpting detail improved with the ROTJ/POTF figures. As stated above, this new line is like a gradual progression of the original Playmates line if they continued a few more years into the late 90s/early 2000s.

Exactly.

I really doubt it.

Shame they aren't 6 inch scale. They look kinda cheesy, like the Cobra Kai figures that came with the TMNT 2 packs recently.

I get why but it would have been better in my opinion to go either 3.75" or 6". Being in between means no crossover. Again, I get all the reasons why but surely the reasons why not to should have out weighed them. IMHO

I was this close to starting to grab all the Star Trek Mego's that are coming out, but this announcement makes me want to hold out a bit longer, I desperately want a 6 inch figure line that'll fit with Marvel Legends and Power Rangers, hope we get some random ensign and lieutenants of various jobs so I can army build using my bucket of disembodied lightning collection heads. I mean, assuming the heads would be on a ball joint that's around the same size as the Hasbro figs are currently.

I just took the tape measure to my Geordi figure and he came in just a hair under 5" so it's close enough in my book.

Here's hoping we get phasers without the weird pinkish beam attached.

JerpJerp 01-24-2022 10:15 PM

AMAZING!
I can't believe they did it! I was hoping for this exact thing but I didn't think they would do it. I knew figures in this style would have a lot of criticism. I'm glad to see a good portion of people are happy about it. I would prefer a bit shorter but this is good enough.

I never collected the original figures even though I really like the way they look. The articulation and structure put me off. This is the perfect combination of retro elements with updated engineering and sculpts. It not just remaking the old molds.
I hope at some point the 90's turtles get treatment like this. Don't make them too tall Playmates! haha the smaller size of the originals is better than ever with all these figures in our collections now.

EternianJerkian 01-25-2022 02:24 AM

These look pretty great to me. Well, the TNG ones. That's the only Star Trek I'm into lol. But yeah, these look a good size too because the playsets don't need to be gigantic or expensive like they would be at 6 inch or whatever and they sure beat the crap out of reaction figures too. And I'd like to see them with the Doctor Who figures even just so I can recreate this cover from the crossover comic lol
(which I tried to post image of but I'm still new a member apparently but it showed the TARDIS with the door open and Picard standing there looking sort of intrigued or confused while the Eleventh Doctor stands beside him)

JPL 01-25-2022 09:06 AM

Something tells me that the scale is intended to mesh with that of the original line, which has been referred to as 4.5" and 5" in my experience. It's like how Vintage Star Wars is referred to as 3.75" scale when it's really 4" (1/18) scale because Kenner used Luke as the standard and Mark Hamill's barely 5'8" ("a little short for a [6-foot] stormtrooper").

Either way, I'm more concerned about the obvious reuse of tooling with the bodies. I don't want a Riker (6'3") who's the same height as Picard (5'8").

GBobD 01-25-2022 11:33 AM

Hope they finally release a TOS Enterprise Bridge. Kinda strange to me that no company has tried to tackle that since Playmates abandoned their attempt.

Ctonra5669 01-25-2022 01:40 PM

I so wanted these to be 3 3/4-4 inch scale this has now became a easy pass for me

snake5289 01-25-2022 01:45 PM

I somewhat agree. They're fine as-is but it would've been pretty cool to have a figure of Riker hanging out with Luke Skywalker.

Thooough, BBTS has cheaper shipping unless you hit the shipping threshold for EE. I always have a PoL so shipping for me is not even considered with BBTS.

This was the series that got me hooked on toy collecting in the late 80’s. My dad was a huge SciFi nerd, and something about the Playmates Star Trek line really spoke to him, because he never collected toys before. Anyway, he would take me to Toys R Us and go peg by peg through all the Star Trek toys looking for the variants of Data and Troi. We had a whole 12 ft long wall of our house COVERED with Star Trek toys MOSC & MISB.

One of the few fond memories I had with my father.

VashTS 01-26-2022 06:44 AM

The Enterprise looks nice to me. Surprised everyone is focused on the figs.

Figs are not great, but I would've done in a 6 inch or 1\6 scale As that is what collectors are aligned with

Not all collectors, mate. And think you might be missing the point here and why the size was chosen. lol.

Anyways price sounds fair enough. Might pick up the TNG ones. If I can ever find them in stores though. I can always find crap ReAction figures with their basic articulation and generic headsculpts but never actually anything I want to hand over my hard-earned cash for. lol. Might have to do the online thing even though I dislike doing so in case I get sent one with derpy eyes or something. lol
