Well the plastic of the toy is different since it's the actual product. I suppose you can make an argument from consumerism and buying all of this plastic crap being bad for the Earth, but as of now they can't make action figures let alone most things out of anything else besides plastic. However, the plastic on the packaging on the other hand is just landfill fodder. I know some people keep their boxes, but most do not, and most of the time that nice plastic tray just becomes garbage. So in that case, it's certainly easier to come up with packaging that uses different materials.

Also I'm not sure anyone ever said that cutting the plastic on the packaging was going to keep prices down. I don't think it's that simple.

In some areas, cities and counties outright lie about recycling because it's expensive. They have separate bins for trash and recycling, but the garbage collector picks up both and dumps everything in the same landfills.

I'm glad my apartment complex is not like that. They have separate trucks that take the trash away from the one that takes the recycling away.

That is a smokescreen. In many places, the trucks all go to the same landfill.

Furthermore, if stuff that's thrown into recycling bins is contaminated or hard to clean, it gets thrown in the landfill. It almost doesn't matter if one person individually is environmentally-conscious. If everyone else who lives near you sucks, all your "recyclables" are going in the landfill.

Aye. My mate used to work for rubbish collectors here in the UK and same sorta thing goes on here too.

In my case though we have an issue where our separate bins kept getting stolen and the council stopped giving us any more so all our rubbish gets collected all as one big pile of full bags anyway

I get both sides of this. On one hand, we have voices in our society with hands on the controls constantly pontificating about the dangers of climate change, but doing very little to actually move the needle on things - that everyone is agrees with and is motivated - like recycling yet won't shut up about electric cars.

So... the toy industry removing plastic from their packaging is suppose to make me think that now someone is getting serious. Not likely.

It's just another hollow gesture to give somebody, somewhere a false sense of personal satisfaction, that will have very little impact on anything in the long run.

It's hilarious. Electric cars are being re-charged by power plants burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, petroleum, doesn't matter).

The biggest contributor to global warming and air pollution is airplanes. We should stop flying if we actually cared.

We should also cut down on the amount of cattle/buffalo we raise. In some countries, cow farts produce more greenhouse gasses (methane) than cars.

Don't forget the methane contribution of fracking. Natural gas is still billed as a "clean" alternative when the process of extraction is more threatening than even CO2 emissions given methane's far greater capacity for trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Makes you think twice about steaks, huh? :D

The way I see it, more cows I eat, the less cows are there to fart, so I'm helping the environment by eating those delicious steaks!

^Hey, I've consumed enough steaks throughout the course of my life. Beyond the looming crisis of running out of protien to feed 8 billion jamokes, I wouldn't miss beef that much. All that said, don't expect any of this (cows, methane, or protein insecurity) to be highlighted anytime soon. The cattle industry is quite muscular and nearly finished Oprah when she dared to challenge them. As powerful as she was, at the time, they shut her down pretty effectively.

The impact is probably small, and plastic free packaging isn't going to save the world. But at least it's better than giving up and doing nothing.

I laugh at people that think electric cars fix the issue. One of my wife's coworkers just got an electric car and his electric bill jumped from $180 to $3,000. Yeah, no thank you, I'll stick to gas. It's far more reliable, especially when traveling cross country and I don't have to worry about it eating up my electric bill. Plus, we don't know the long term effects on energy from electric cars. I mean, people were going on about the energy NFTs eat up and those are tiny compared to electric cars.

Cracked did a “if recycling ads were honest” video last year that pretty much said exactly that.

I’m good with plastic free packaging, cardboard heck I’m fine buying loose figures they could put a paper barcode on a loose figure I’d still buy it. Sometimes the plastic tray inserts warp the limbs anyway.

I started steering away from most plastics a few years ago for selfish reasons, I heard they might be releasing estrogenic chemicals so we swapped out shampoo bottles for bar shampoos and soaps and use plates over bowls and bowls over plates for leftovers, metal/glass/ceramic cups etc.... I probably sound like someone who wears a tin foil hat but oh well

They should use SOMETHING to allow the product to be seen. I forsee many a return ( everything from crappy paint to repacks )at stores and hasbro will either have revert to window boxes or just cancel all their blind boxed line,ps.

And I foresee no one legitimately caring about the new packaging anymore by this time next year after they get used to it.

yeah, it's not a perfect solution. and there's the issue of increased lithium demand creating the same extraction-based issues we see with fossil fuels. but! this creates an opportunity for more public transportation and walk-able/bike-able spaces.

If everyone was like NYC or Portland, sure, public transportation would rock. However, the public transit system here in Colorado is a joke. There is no PT to suburban areas. And depending where you go, you will need to take 2-3 buses to get there. The light rail they established in 2009 goes to downtown and back.

Plus, the cost is astronomical. Parking in Downtown Denver is cheaper than riding the bus or lightrail. Depending on where you live, it can cost you $10 for a one way ticket from your place to downtown, and that is after taking a bus to get to the station unless you want to walk to the station for 45 minutes.

We used to drive to a lightrail station close to downtown, but even that got expensive because it's like $10 to park at a mall downtown or $5 a lightrail ticket, which means $20 back and forth for both of us.

Well, for SOME collections I do like to get 2 of each, because their packaging is so well designed. Like the current connecting pictures of Star Wars figures. But if you can't see the figures in the future, then there's no sense just collecting boxes. Which saves me money as I'll just go back to getting 1 of each.

Wait, they rereleased Star Wars figures that collected dust to the point that my store stopped carrying them regularly???? Why would they do that?

Mainly to get them redone with face printing which did make a few of them look significantly better than their first figures but also because this is the first time they did Bodhi so they just put the rest with him. The Cassian is also technically distinct because this version was previously only in a three pack, the original Cassian had the big blue jacket. As an aside I think this Rogue One assortment might have been fan channel or something because I've never seen it at the big box stores (then again distribution for the line has been very lousy lately).

IMO Rogue One was the best Disney SW movie... and probably the last good SW movie for a very long time. Disney trying to turn Jyn Erso into the next big thing was kinda sad though... she was just such a boring character compared to Rey and Ahsoka.

Rogue One was the best Star Wars movie since Empire. It actually felt like there was a war going on and it is a shame it got the shaft. I personally think Jyn is the best female character to be featured in the movies. And then there was K2SO, who was just badass.

Until the Star Wars dude that looks like a Sontaran from Doctor Who, I hadn't seen any new Star Wars Black figures on the pegs since Covid hit. I was hoping the Rebels crew was going to show up but they never did and now I just have no motivation to hunt them down, especially because they are probably double the price.
