Have yet to watch this, I did see pics/vid of the new wolverine anime adaptation and hate it, wolverine is not Japanese so fuck off, the Iron man is pretty good as Tony could be a Japanese billianare and more likely to be building robots then an american lol. I did enjoy the Hulk vs series of thor/wolverine, very enjoyable, and the Avengers movies were well done, frankly Marvel/DC adapations are both good and bad.

Well...Wolverine did spend A LOT of his time in Japan, hell, Daken is half Japanese...so it didn't really say that he is Japanese or not, just lived his life in Japan, so....yea.

Wolverine still isn't Japanese in the anime either. Neither is Tony. The Ironman one deliberately mentions in the start this is a business altruistic venture in Japan. The X-Men travel from America to Japan as well because of a mutant crisis happening there. All these characters still have their origins intact, they just have a story based reason on why they go to Japan.
In fact it makes deliberate mention of this many times in each series and shown in the beginning deliberately. For Wolverine, it's a loose adaption of his time in Japan that was in the comics. So it had no need to cover this immediately at the start, but it is mentioned throughout.

Seriously, what's with everyone assuming if it's anime or looks like anime, every character in it must be asian or japanese? Tons of anime where this isn't the case. It's a character by character thing and always has been.

Rally Vincent and Minnie May aren't Japanese. Sam and Dean Winchester aren't Japanese, among an ungodly number of others that aren't Japanese. Most of the DBZ characters aren't Japanese either. The list can go on and on. Just like not every animated character in america is American.

All the term 'anime' means is that it was produced and animated by an asiatic region for said region. Nothing more, nothing less. Unless you're talking about france, but that's different because of their language. The styles of anime vary widely themselves as much as say american animation or european animation. This is the reason why simply outsourcing to japan for animation duties, but not intended for there doesn't count as anime. (Original Transformers, GI Joe, among an ungodly amount of others from the 80s, 90s, and now.)

Just like Buffy the Vampire slayer isn't Tokusatsu. Though it's counted as such in Japan as that's their word for Sci-fi/effects type series. Anime is Japan and France's word for animation(not surprising since their origins are intertwined back from the early days of trade agreements when the first roto animator wheel spinny thing was made before television). Just like in america it's all animation, but we use some words like anime to denote origin to suggest the cultural differences that'll be within. Or we use Cartoon to denote the satirical/comedic nature of said animation or comic strip/panel. Like old school batman, and such are considered animated series, not really cartoons, though we do throw the word cartoon around a lot. I know I'm guilty of that.

For example, Tenchi Muyo is both anime and a cartoon because it's animated in japan, intended for japanese audiences, and has a satirical nature to it.
Looney Tunes is both american animation, and satirical, so yes it's a cartoon too but not anime.

Was that what it was? Could be but I don't think that's the one I'm thinking of. I think it was just the X-Men and it was on an X-Men VHS tape.

Those are the only early fully animated episodes that had the X-Men in them.

Pryde of the X-Men the test pilot that never got off the ground, and SPider-man and his amazing friends with the firestar origin. "A Firestar is Born" if you want to look it up on youtube.
The firestar origin episode told the origin of firestar in flashback while she was at an Xavier institute reunion with iceman which later the Juggernaut attacks during because spider-man couldn't stop him by himself.

The only other animated pieces pre-90s (besides the other oneshot animations like spider-woman, spider-man, and some others)were more or less motion comics without motion, and I don't think X-Men even had one. Only cap, namor, Ironman, and the fantastic 4(who also had a pre-80s fully animated series that created Herbie).

behindthemask 08-29-2011 11:40 PM

Not to hate on anime because I don't I love it, just in doses, I've gone through that Pokemon faze and Dragonball Z faze, Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Geomon, Appleseed, Aeon Flux, Metal Gear Solid, final fantasy, hell Samurai Pizza Cats! love that show. I love the style as in the fighting, costume design and environmental layouts, but to me some stuff doesn't look good in Anime, or the idea pisses me off as in Wolverine being done in anime... to each their own I guess

Don't forget the Mighty Thor. :)

Nothing wrong with that. I just prefer to let a show stand on its own before I call it bad(and by no means am I a fan of Wolverine's anime or Ironman's). The region that made it doesn't determine that. I'm just sick of people automaticly assuming things are what they aren't ethnicity-wise. After the last Airbender fiasco reached such public heights, someone has got to start stating the truth of the matter before this new wave of everyone in anime or what they think is anime = asian ruins all future licenses or movies. Or that anime has one solid universal style when so much anime proves otherwise. (DBZ, One Piece, Hello Kitty, Shin Chan, Panda-Z, Astroboy, Dead Leaves, Clamp's work, Big O, Aeon Flux, and many many many others. Each artist has their own style, some tend to the poppy standard that many think anime only is, and others vary widely as much as american artists use a wide array of personal flair styles.) So yeah, I can see why you dislike the wolverine and Ironman ones, but don't just pigeon-hole anime as a one trick pony. Just like you shouldn't pigeon hole american animation or European either. Also, you only listed the more or less mainstream kid audiences anime(barring a few of the classics). You should broaden your horizons with some of the modern pioneers aimed more at your age range that vary in style. Then you might get a bigger appreciation for it as just a medium to convey a story and not about where it's from(the kid stuff tends to be fluffy teamwork, burning heart of justice type drivel, whereas older demographic shows are more realistic to what would really happen in these situations, or is just wildly psychadelic). The same could be said about all shores. (Sorry, I'm only bitchy on this topic from years of dealing with the fandoms of both sides, and both have superiority complexes instead of just looking at it for what it is. All animation, anime or otherwise is just a medium to convey a story and how well they do that within the confines of the designs, scripts, and acting is what determines how good or bad it is. You also need to factor in intended age demographics. Some stuff is for adults, some is for kids, on all shores.)

I'm no anime fanboy, but I also don't limit what I watch to just one shore. I just like what I like, where it's from is moot so long as it's good.

Also not to nitpick, but the quote in your sig. It should be "It's not a Doll, It's called an action figure get it right." Action Figures are still toys. Though many prefer collectibles these days. Not to nitpick you, just everytime I see that I keep scratching my head. xD

Yup and thor.

I haven't seen any Iron Man and Wolverine Anime but I have seen the first episode of the Avengers and it sucks.

thechris 08-29-2011 11:59 PM

The particular anime toons that I'm not a big fan of usually fall into the harem category.

thechris 08-30-2011 12:07 AM

If they ever make an anime where Thor is an androgynous college student who is slowly manifesting his Asgardian powers and is constantly being accosted by the Wasp, Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Spider Woman, Enchantress, Sif and Tigra but is secretly in love with Jane Foster who is also secretly in love with him but finds him immature and hits him with giant mallets that materialize out of nowhere, someone will have to die.

warmachine6 08-30-2011 03:36 AM

I don't know why but, MARVEL needs to make this ^ happen in future seasons and incarnations.

I'd like to see marvel expand their character roster though for the next round.
Instead of doing direct sequels to all of these, they should open up the roster more and do in spirit/other characters.

Ironman -> Avengers or at the very least bring rescue and war machine in
X-Men -> Academy X/New X-Men or X-Factor or X-Force (uncanny or v3) or New Mutants
Blade -> Ghost Rider or Doc Strange or Midnight Sons or any occult hero
Wolverine -> X-23 or Heroes 4 Hire (Luke Cage and Ironfist specificly as they have that more urban edge like Wolverine or X-23 does.)

I know it's a pipe dream, but it'd help broaden the amount of animation out there, the stories told, as well as get more characters out to the audiences to make them aware of them for future comic sales/recognition. I also hope this time around they stick to their guns about the story bleed over and crossovers instead of changing or just ditching it like they did with X-Men and Blade. Not one unifying badguy, but give us at least better hints at one unified anime universe if each series is only going to be 10-13 episodes each.
I do like the single season format, but if that's the case, do more with it! 13 episodes each for more variety and exposure is perfect. If after 13 eps it wasn't as popular as the mainstays, well you didn't waste a full 52 to find that out! Lesson learned for the next round and not do that character again(though they really shouldn't anyway with that plan, keep expanding until you run out then go back to the mainstays since they'll have this vast backlog of anyone who can appear once established).

As for the dubs, I kind of wish they'd better establish why they are speaking certain languages.
Like the supernatural anime makes sense to be in english, it's happening in america with american characters. Ironman's anime has a story point that makes it understandable he's speaking japanese, ditto to wolverine. X-Men just glossed over it, as did blade. Blade the Last vampire was done in english originally because it just made story-centric sense for that(american army base in Japan). That's all I'm asking for here. Give me valid story to explain it, and if there isn't one, let them stick to their native tongue that would make sense for it. (Logan speaking japanese, but Omega Red should stick to russian or english. It doesn't make sense that Omega Red speaks such bad japanese without any story reason to explain it.)
It honestly makes no sense to me if a character has no reason or purpose speaking a language they shouldn't even know, especially when they aren't in that country(like at the start of X-Men). They are also missing a huge story oppurtunity here as well about language barriers in some instances like say Omega Red.

Preferably, and I know an X-23 one won't happen, but if they do, they should get Summer Glau for both and have her switch up the languages used based on what's needed for the scene as the character itself makes sense to be able to adapt to any scenario. Just like wolverine can. Or for the X-men, give us a little english at the beginning with some comment later about Xavier or Emma downloading the language into their brains/translating it for them.

This works for both dubs and original. If the scene or location calls for it for best effect, use what's appropriate(takes place in america with americans, use english, if it's in japan, especially a period story like rurouni kenshin or samurai champloo, use japanese). If it doesn't matter and the story is timeless or locationless (like many animes take place in the future, new worlds, new societies, etc like cowboy bebop makes sense either way) it's moot and either works.

shid....^ What he said. lol

Seriously though, I like how these Anime's have the potential to open up other series and characters.
The whole concept of the trial and error thing by using the 15 episodes instead of suffering through 52 was brilliant!
My degree isn't in marketing but, I must say, this here would be a steal for MARVEL (Disney)!

snake5289 09-10-2011 11:45 AM

If they decide to continue the Marvel Anime I'm hoping for Daredevil and Ghost Rider. A Spider-Man could be pretty sweet but I seriously doubt it would happen.

KshatriyaNZ666 09-10-2011 02:08 PM

I personally never bothered to look into the Iron Man or Wolverine anime adaptations, 'cause quite frankly, the initial promos/trailers turned me off.

I've seen one episode of the X-Men one (where they were fighting it out in the snow with this U-Men guy in some powered suit). And I found it decent enough - everyone looked liked they should, aside from Storm :(

I have to say I'm looking forward to Blade's turn. Bloody, visceral, and grounded is where Madhouse is most at home. Plus, they're like one of the few anime studios who actually draw African Americans without those stereotypical big-ass lips (excuse my Japanese :) )

My favorite project from them would be the Black Lagoon series - which I'd recommend to anyone who'd like to take a tentative step into trying out an anime series. (Note: English dub is where it's at with this show)

I've tried watching animae Wolverine and Iron Man on G4, and they both kind of blow IMO.

Dylan in Oregon 09-10-2011 02:22 PM

Yeah, that Wolverine anime is trash, he rocks a mullet and gets beat with a stick.

His mullet and the excessive blood letting are the only things I like about that toon.
