Again I am likely biased cuz of the fact I won this month but doesn't posting increase traffic of the site? Which is good for the site and for selling ad space. So even if I made a thread based solely on my love for AJ then I am increasing traffic correct? So as long as people aren't just spamming and double/triple/quad/whatever posting and they are staying bassicly on topic (I don't mind getting off topic) then idealy its winning all around.

I'd agree with this statement. I love Hisstank for the community it has, but it does get a bit old when half of the topics turn to spam within the first 30 minutes of a new posting. Those guys don't even win anything and they post nonstop. So even though I love the site, it's nice to have an alternative balance over here.

I wasn't suggesting it as an alternative to the system they already have in place just asking the group what they would do with the option if it were presented to them.

People seem surprised that the site administrators have the ability to do this and some even think that they should do it more often.

Which begs the question: If you could, would you rather give points out or take them away?

I'm beginning to suspect you'd likely do both.

I gotta agree with roshan on this one.

There's nothing more frustrating than having a legitimate thread exiled to the Spam Forum through no fault of your own.

Although I will admit, I have been one of the spammers who have brought down a thread in the past, so I'm not without guilt on that one.

PM me if you're interested.

Congrats to the winners, ALL of them.

A special congratulations to Fortune; who is Fortune's greatest son.

Ditto.
Except in my case for this month, just let it go to the next person that would have won if by some fluke I do. (The only time this won't be true is when it's a prize I absolutely need/want beyond all rational thought. Like the BBTS Exclusive Galactus or Amazon Unicron. xD )

Congrats to the winners!

It has become part of the culture there I think, but not necessary a bad thing, just different.

Maybe the mods could contact the OP and ask them if they mind, and if they do, they could just delete the spam posts and issue warnings.

To each his own.

Another problem is because of double and triple posts some people do without using the edit feature. This ends up bolstering their points but they should have those points reduced.

It varies, but an autonomous system with some minor regulation to make sure the person that won had won based on following the rules of the site is a must(which is what they do).

The problem with other users attributing values is because if a user says something you don't like, or is against what a fan wants to believe will sway the amount of points they give. Like when movie discussions come up, or facts about different comic series, how toylines work with retail chains etc. (Anything an average or new user may not know much about yet from lack of exposure as some of us have from the years of collecting.)
So the automatic system avoids that kind of emotional response or blind fan bias.

The attributed points way problem is it would very much become a popularity contest on who thinks the same opinions over who presents worthwhile content and just sharing your own opinion. The other sites that do it that way have that issue too of conformity over independant new varied thoughts.

Oh, I totally agree.

I think the system is fine the way it is, just wondering what other Arkers would do if they could either give themselves extra points, or take points away from someone else.

On the subject of double posts, I've noticed the same pics being posted multiple times in multiple threads. Now on the surface it could be said that this is done to give the pics more exposure, but I think an argument could be made that this is really just an attempt to pad posters post counts.

On this fact I agree. Sometimes I question why certain pictures have to show up in 3-4 threads. Especially when it comes to hauls and it seems we have to see them multiple times packaged and unpackaged. I believe I double posted one time here by mistake and I edited one of them asking a mod to delete it. I am also a huge fan of the multiquote. I have seen some users even complain they dont know how to use it....I dont 100% buy that. But like I said I like the system as is but I am biased I bet.

I don't mind pics showing up in multiple threads if they fit to each thread within reason, but I'd prefer it if they also added new pics alongside the old to go with it so it doesn't seem as obvious spam posting of same content mulitiple places. At least then it's repeated and new content in the same post.

Now if it's an obvious 2-4 posts in a row of the same person with one line sentences each... Well someone might want to point out the edit function to that user.

Regarding double posts and potential "post count bumping" - just use the report post feature (this button - http://www.toyark.com/images/toyark-...ons/report.gif), and we will take a look at it. Do not call folks out in thread of course, as that just enflames the situation. After we take a look, if we see a pattern or feel it's unnecessary spam, we can delete the posts. We may not do it immediately, or every time you think it should happen, but we do want the forum to flow normally, with or without the experience situation in place.

Regarding administrators adding points - it's a built in feature of the system, that we have never used, and do not plan on using. The only thing that matters for prizes is the average post count over the last 30 days, combined with consecutive days online logged in. Every other stat is just for fun right now. In the future, we may add more methods for prizes using the other stats, but that's down the road.

I post my pictures in multiple threads and didnt think there is a problem with that. Reason being is I post them in my collection thread and whatever other thread it pertains to for more exposure. Not to pad my own post count because as i've said already many times, I could case less about that. I enjoy taking pictures and like to share them with as many people as possible. My pictures popping up in multiple threads that takes me time to take and setup for everyones enjoyment should not be an issue as opposed to other issues with the site when it comes to posting.

QFT, and very well said. Thanks. =D I hope this continues to grow as it's a great idea to see you guys road testing and adapting to the flaws as they come up.

I already answered this, I'd never give myself points because that'd be flat out dumb and would only give negative's out if you could also give out positive points. Look at sites like LXforums, 300forumz, that have a successful posting system where solid members are recognized through their feedback received.

Ive reported multiple spam posts in the past and the response I got from a certain admin was to stop reporting because the posts were on topic even though they werent even related to the thread in any way and the same member had been abusing this.

funny thing is I could care less about the free stuff,I dont want any of it,I would rather be left alone to post without being told im "spamming" or being accused of "posting for points",its so dumb imo, just let me enjoy the damn website and here read this and know im for real,I DONT WANT FREE TOYS,just freedom to post,im not saying I want to go all hisstank crazy posting because looking back at all that it is dumb, but if I want to post 2 posts in a row then shrug it off and take comfort in knowing I dont want your toys, thanks.

ok omega,in your opinion what is a spam post?I mean other than the obvious way off topic type post or someone trolling.

Tiberius 11-01-2011 05:07 PM

I don't think there should be a points system, period. It may be asking a lot from the mods, but I am sure they check the site daily and read pages of posts for fun/info/doing their job. With that being said, every month the mods should talk to one another and have a vote among themselves to see who contributed the most, then second most then, third. This way, spam is reduced, and no ones reputation as a "regular" or a "newbie that just wants free shit" gets thrown around, this way we are all equal, more equal than we are now.

Congrats to all the winners for last month... Some amazing prizes, I hope we can see some pics up of them soon!

As for this month... Oooh, I am liking those Mini Muggs! ^^

thechris 11-01-2011 08:55 PM

Congrats to the winners this month. :)

Here's another one of my too long to read posts.

I guess it's too late now, but one thing that probably would have prevented a lot of this would have been a secret system that was only visible to the mods. I think this was pitched before but many of us seemed quite keen on actually seeing what our stats were. Unleashed the Pandora's box.

My experience on here is totally changing, though, I can say that much. I don't know what it is, but I have to be honest and say that I don't feel as compelled to talk toys on here as I did originally. I just find that I get annoyed on here a lot now. I can't help it. This forum used to be busy with what felt like 90% toy discussions, 10% general discussions. Heck, I love general discussions, but now it's turned into more like 60% general discussions, 40% toy discussions.

Now I don't even feel like I can post anything remotely off topic because there used to be an unwritten rule where we could post the odd off topic post but knew all had a certain feel and self policing where we kind of realized if we were going too off topic but now, when I go into a specific thread, I see like 5 or 10 off topic posts in a row. I feel so taken back by this that I don't even know how to get the thread back on topic and I don't want to contribute to further bringing it off topic so I just don't bother posting anything at all.

And I'm not going to point fingers, but I'm finding a lot of people are just being downright rude to me. The air has been particularly sarcastic and snide lately and this forum actually feels quite unfamiliar to me now. And there's such an overwhelming amount of goofy posts now that I find myself having to chop through 10 dumb threads before I can get to a proper one. And by dumb threads, I mean ones with questions that have been answered 100 times. Or ones by people trying to be cute. I mean yeah, I've posted fluff threads, maybe a couple here and there, but I find the SAME people are posting hundreds of "What girl do you think is hot?" "What's your favourite brand of cheese?" "How many people shave their pubes?" posts and it's pissing me off. The WORST ones are the ones that have totally ambiguous titles reading something along the lines of "I'm so excited about..." Hmmm, yes, this piques my interest, so I click it and get: "...my first kitten! How many of you like cats???" I don't mind a couple of these every so often, but there have been a LOT of them.

And I don't have an issue with n00bs. I'm not far from that myself but I have familiarized myself with everyone here and kind of assimilated into this community. It's just when I see that just about every n00b has 2 or possibly 3 times the posts of some of the most frequent posters in the past, it's a little suspicious. Maybe that was the intention of this contest, but it wears thin. And as quickly as we're getting new people on here who are on a posting marathon, it also looks like we're losing some of our original regulars. I know out with the old and in with the new wasn't the intention, but it seems like that's kind of what's going on.

And I've got to just say it. There's this new "We're the new kids in town and we n00bs are gonna take over this place" attitude with n00bs aggressively ganging up on some of our most respected veterans and it's really starting to annoy me. Not necessarily towards me (although I've tasted some of it undeservingly). Part of this was due to the amount of negativity that was expressed at some new posters who were thought to have been going on a fluff post marathon to pad their post count but even after people have been letting bygones be bygones, some people just aren't getting over it. It's the classic "nerd never forgives the jock" syndrome long after the jock has moved on.

I come home from a long day at work and kick back and want to relax. I come on here for a little bit and I don't want to deal with attitude. I don't care who picked on you last month, it wasn't me. Get over it. And yeah, I guess I also have to get over it, but I also don't have to hang here and put up with your crap. I've been nothing but welcoming to n00bs just as everyone was welcoming to me when I first joined but now I no longer feel welcome. I feel completely alienated, but hey, I've made some good contacts on here and I'll still post from time to time, but it honestly isn't the same anymore.

I realize that things grow and they change and that's cool. I don't expect this forum to stay the same for one person's sake. This isn't a, "Waaa! I'm leaving now." post. Like I said, I still plan on posting now and then, but if anyone was wondering what my thoughts were on the current state of things and also why I've suddenly not been posting as often as I used to, this is why.

Peteparker 11-01-2011 09:09 PM

Thanks to everyone for the nice congrats.

In my personal opinion, this whole thing should generally be ignored, and if you win, hey, that's a nice and unnecessary bonus for enjoying a site you already do. If you're worrying about your points or someone else's points, you're wasting your energy.

Well unfortunately, there's no way to prove one way or the other if someone would be posting 2000 posts a month if this contest didn't motivate them to do so. It doesn't, however, change the fact that I'm getting really fed up with some of the recent content which would be the case whether or not we had this contest. And like I said, the misleading titles are just killing me. Some of the posts just seem really DUMB, in my opinion.
