If Mattel made their 1/18th the same quality as their 1/12th, DC toys would be whoopin' ass all over Marvel toys.

Well....no.

Marvel is between movies just now, that's all When Cap was out, Marvel had a huge presence- and IM2 laster for literally years iin stores- it's still there!

That shows a lot of faith in the marvel brand- otherwise theyy'd have pawned the IM2 figs onto secondary retailors like Marshalls long before now.

Also consider shelf space accorded to large Hasbro items that Mattel cant touch- Sentinels and Galactus...not to mention other lines like Star Wars.

Large chains cant go all-Hasbro and freeze out Mattel- diversity and compitition makes for better (and cheaper) toys!

Neither company excels at both. Marvel has great 3.75" but mediocre 6" figure lines. Mattel came a long way by the end of DCIH, but their earlier 3.75" stuff, movie lines, and YJ lines have been really weak while their DCUC line far surpasses the quality of Marvel Legends under both ToyBiz & Hasbro.

All the above are merely opinions, but I believe these are commonly held.

I agree, in these tough economic times why can't these two companies (Hasbro & Mattle) cut a deal....Mattle you take the 6 inch and Hasbro you take the 4 inch... Then perhaps we will all be happy campers!?

Yes and no. Depends on the store. At Wal-Mart stores here, DC has more stuff on the pegs, while MU sells through much better (except poor IM2). WM has sooo much GL stuff that is not selling. Also, the 6" (or whatever) aren't selling too well either, not to mention the multi-fig sets. But at Target, Marvel rules with far, far more pegs dedicated to their lines. At TRU, there is more Marvel in total due to the variety Marvel figures (including the Avengers $20 figs as well as the statues that spell "Avengers"). As a whole, DC doesn't seem to sell very well - except perhaps the 4" line that seems to sell pretty well. I collected a few of the Infinite Crisis figures but it was difficult to impossible to find figures I wanted at retail like the Joker, and most that I was looking for were only in mult-packs that I only bought when they were at discount stores.

D00MTR0N 11-05-2011 06:04 PM

imo DC is just not as popular as marvel thus the toys dont sell as much so there is always a ton of them.

Well, desperation oves like the recent reboot dont help either...nor does lack of attention to detail- like useing the Superman body for the golden age Atom!
That's like useing Cable's body for Puck!

Im trying to find something positive to say about mattel but, well, id say they have quantity over quality. For instance, when i go to a toysrus, all the green lantern stuff is this one blurr or green. The 6 inch stuff has huge boxes but there only like 12 figs present on the pegs. But the brave and bold and the their version of super hero squad is not something i pay attention to.

Nexodusrex 11-05-2011 07:03 PM

I think people forget the sheer amount of items Hasbro has on retail
along with their marvel brands, theres Transformers, GIjoe, My Little Pony, Nerf, Littlest Pet Shop, Playdoh, Milton Bradley Board games, Tonka, Bakugan, and Star Wars.

Mattel has at retail this moment is Toy Story, Disney Princesses, Fisher Price, Matchbox, Barbie, DC, WWE, and Hotwheels.

thats 12 over 8, and most of Hasbro's stuff is in the boys section. Hasbro is selling more than Mattel also. I can guarentee My Little Pony sells more than Barbie right now. and you know what that means

Toys: Marvel>DC
Characters: Marvel=DC
Brand: Hasbro: best toy company ever
Mattel: could do better.

They both have their hands in a lot more than you give either company credit for. You forget that Mattel has the Disney lisense, they can make toys of almost anything Disney has. They've currently got Lion King toys, and Cars is their biggest (And has been since day one). Mattel also has a stronger relationship to the direct collector market, where Hasbro has none.

Honestly, hasbro has almost no relations with the fans of it's properties. (I think MU is where they have the strongest hold in putting out collector toys?)
Their relationship with Transformer collecters pretty much no longer exists, and they also never make toys directly for the collector market anymore (If they put out a full collector piece, then it's using something Takara already made for theirs, like the Masterpiece line. Amazon's Unicron, and BBTS' Seacons being the only exceptions to direct market collector pieces).
Mattel has been catering directly to adult collectors for decades now, in almost every line. Ghostbusters and Heman after all exist exclusively for adult collectors.
But, if you're going into simantics as you are, Hasbro has more brands and more lines period. They are the largest toy company in the world, so they can't not. If you're wanting to bring up the amount of stuff hasbro puts out as a blanket company vs mattel, yeah they're gonna dominate. They dominate everyone. So bringing *everything* they do doesn't really say much.
That's like compairing allosaurids to charcarodontosaurids.

But (and this part is an open statement not directed at any one individual), none of this has any real meaning, as everyone *still* ignores, or doesn't understand the true meaning of the thread. Mattel's DC toys currently has the largest presence in the action figure isle. Which is technically true.
It's not stating how much better DC toys are. It's not stating that they outself Marvel toys. It's simply commented that DC toys have the largest presence in the toy isles, vs marvel's presence.

seriously... All I read was blah blah blah, when it comes down to it, you buy what you like, if you like Batman you by dc toys so you typically end up buying Mattel. You like Spidey,Iron man and wolverine you buy Marvel thus buying into Hasbro. Personally you can't say Hasbro doesn't reach out to the collector market, hello SDCC & NYCC and subscription figures, if that doesn't scream collector I don't know what does, or how about the variants from figure stands to repaints, I hardly see shit like that with DC figures. My local walmart has so much DC shit on the pegs you'd think it caused people aids or something, the marvel stuff sells, hell even tech deck sells, I really wish Marvel didn't get shafted in shelf space, but someone has to be the toy isle bitch I guess. Personally Mcfarlane and Neca have better figure sculpts then both these companies and about the same aritculation as DC figures. I wish we got Mcfarlane details with revoltech articulation, at hasbro pricing lol.

Also more DCU figures come with bases then MU/ML so thats why they seem more flimsy, plus it sucks having an awesome sculpt with no to little articulation. I can always repaint a figure hell I can resculpt a figure, but it's hard to add more articulation without the chance of fubaring it.

DogFashionDisco 11-05-2011 11:26 PM

They play their parts equally in the toy collecting game, and let me tell you, they both epically fail too often, Nitpick my perspective all you want, but both of these companies take no risks, they are purely producing toys for profit. There is no actual toy love there, just the process of making a buck, the only thing either Mattel or Hasbro knows how to do.

Obviously all you did real really was "blah blah blah" because your entire post has absolutely nothing to do with anything I said.
I never badmouthed anyone's collecting or toys. I never said anything negative about MU. And in fact, my very first post was a statement like yours, "To each their own, buy what you like."

The only thing that had any realavence to my post: the "Hasbro Subscription Figure" part. Hasbro doesn't offer a subscription service. Mattel does though, and Hasbro's been talking about ripping it off, through the Joe and TF collector clubs.
I will admit the Star Wars part of Hasbro caters heavily and insanely to the fans. But then I tend to forget Star Wars even exists at times.
As for varients, there's usually a varient or two in each DCUC wave. But MU varients tend to be insanely rare (Not Hasbro's fault I'll admit. That's probably more to scalpers), and it doesn't seem like Hasbro makes them very often.
Like I'd said, Mattel has a few lines that exists exclusively for the collector market, and are marketed exclusively to the collector market.
Right off the top of my head? Ghostbusters, Heman, Voltron Classics. There are probably others when you get around brands none of us follow, like Barbi.
Hell, they've even gone out of their way to make one for DCUC so they can continue to produce the really obscure characters the collector market craves. (I can't see Hasbro doing that for Marvel Legends, or even MU if that took a sharp downturn).
Hasbro does nothing like this. If they can't sell a line at retail, they won't do it at all. They have the same resources and capabilities as Mattel. In fact, they have more resources than they do. So they could if they wanted to.
But Mattel has been catering directly to the Adult Collector market for decades, where as Hasbro has only really started to acknowledge there is one over the last fifteen years or so. (Oldschool Joe and SW not withstanding. But like I admitted, Star Wars has always been insanely geared towards fandom.)

I was agreeing to everything you said but I remembered that hasbro has a G.I.joe collectors club, which gets a ton of exclusives and furthermore, they got several conventions with packs and unique figures, the thing here would be that hasbro should open a Marvel collectors club as well so they can bring more to the collectors.

bmorr 11-06-2011 06:21 AM

I still believe the subscription service is a joke. Your paying into a service where you get a figure you potentially dont want. On second thought, are they still even still doing the service? Did that whole minimum pre order thing go through?

CLASSIFIED 11-06-2011 06:25 AM

I feel Marvel has more shelf space at the toystore than DC does even though DC may have more individual lines.

DCUC, Batman Legacy, and GL Classics all have like 1 or 2 rows, while the Marvel movie lines have more rows, a row for deluxe figs, a row for bump and go figs, and vehicle space.

bmorr 11-06-2011 06:44 AM

oh and dont forget they have a HUGE presence on end caps. specifically TFs, SW, and MU.

mattel has a whole isle dedicated to wrestling figs.

Jason Abbadon 11-06-2011 07:01 AM

Mattel has a hule presence on the Clearance Asile too- they dominate there.:D

LXL_Guy 11-06-2011 07:52 AM

Would Marvel Select be on the same lines as DC Direct?

I only ask because it kind of pertains to topic here. Both are equally impressive when they put out quality sculpts to entice the fans.

Then again both also do put out a lot of stuff no one wants too.

They're on equal footing at times.

I would say that Marvel Select is very close similiarity to DC's 6'' line, as the sculpts are both usually awesome and articulation limited, plus both usually come with a base. good comparison.

So yeah, I guess you're right, there's more DC out there right now. Maybe it'll balance out soon. . .all the Green Lantern stuff will dry up (but will be replaced with stuff for the new Batman movie) but Marvel will be adding back Marvel Legends. I think it's more that most of the DC stuff is 5" - 7" while most of the Marvel stuff is 4". They take up less space.

the multipacks fall under MU.

more impressive is the wrong term. Prolific, maybe.

I think their six inch lines are impressive but overpriced. The rest of the things they put out just aren't for me. I'm primarily a 4 inch collector who's a super-hero fan above all else, and Mattel is simply toy-collector-ese for sub-par in my mind.

The Joe and Transformers collectors club are done by a company called Fun Publishings. Hasbro has very little hand in it. They lisence Joe and Transformers from Hasbro so they can do the conventions.
And at least my experences with FP through my membership since 2005, FP really couldn't care less about the TF fans or what they want. They definately have no communication skills.
