Curious, would you even have made this thread about Marvel losing money and heading downhill if the headline article wasnt a Doom related comic?

Now that I am fully at the end.
I think they are being frugal. Disney likes profits and tight money management. The man up top is looking at the big stock bonuses. It is corporate management politics is all. Right now their numbers are most likely being scrutinized so they can find the next big thing. DC has really done up the sales and Marvel management wants that. I wouldn't be surprised if a few more get it with a few more quick starts and more of the proven money makers to show up. |

I just think it is canceled for now. Doom needs to do something major to get people interested again and THEN he can have his own comic. I'm more pissed that Alpha Flight is canceled already. No love for Canada these days it seems...

well either way if they only cut the Doom series I think omega could have made that statement with a little more solidity to it but the fact is they are cutting quite a few stories so...

The Marvel comics division has been hemoraging money for awhile now. Marvel itself is fine as is Disney because of the royalties, toons, movies, toys and other merchandising. The comics on the other hand with perlmutter still as CEO are causing problems. They can't meet their projections because the readership is getting smaller. So perlmutter, not Disney, is gutting the company from the inside out to cut costs to meet the projections.
This includes canceling books that don't look like they'll perform, and consolidating books that are on the cusp to other books to try and merge readerships. This is why X-23 is being canceled. Her story will continue over in avengers academy and hopefully boost the readership there. Other titles are just nixed in general because they don't look like they'll perform as expected like monsters one or the doom one, and others like Daken are just going to end if the readership doesn't pick up since he doesn't really fit anywhere yet. X-23 at least, while I'm not fond of the avengers academy route, it does make sense for 'therapy' reasons of learning to bond with others that don't have preconceptions of what to expect. I just hope the writers of AA have done their homework on the character and it's not Claremont growliness wolverette all over again. T_T But again for reiteration. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DISNEY DIRECTLY! THIS IS ISAAC PERLMUTTER'S FAULT. He's trying to gut the company as still marvel CEO to meet projections he gave to Disney so HE doesn't get replaced when he probably should be. It's one of those devil you know over the devil you don't though. This is not directly Disney's fault in any way shape or form. Perlmutter was the ceo of marvel before the buyout and still is. They want Marvel to make money the Marvel way... Disney just has a short term memory and forgets the Marvel way is what led to bankruptcy in the 90s. Disney is fine with Marvel so long as they keep providing material that can be reworked for other mediums. Disney knows that's where the real money is at, and so long as the comics don't become unweildly budget vaccuums that cost more to create than they make in profits, disney will remain hands off as such. I have mild suspicions though that Perlmutter is also the reason Marvel hasn't seen the other benefits from being part of Disney yet. Him being the sole conduit to the disney heads and all for marvel which leaves him with pure control and tons of money, but everyone else suffers on the Marvel side except for those tapped for the other media forays. |
I bet they cancelled those books because they weren't selling enough copies.

A major reason the Doom series was cancelled before it even started was probably Previews. My comic shop guy told me yesterday that NOT ONE PERSON that uses that shop pre-ordered the series. That says something. There is a good mix of customers there, and alot of older guys like me that order alot of unusual stuff. As for me, I'm a big Doom fan and have been since I was a kid. I had no interest in this particular series. Just didn't sound interesting.
As for the other series that are cancelled, I get that too. If a series isn't working (for whatever reason), then it's just not working. I've actually been enjoying the new Ghost Rider series. But I'll live without it and not be angry with Marvel. Heck, Guardians of the Galaxy was my favorite series and I've even been alright since they cancelled it. If enough people aren't interested, a book's not gonna make it. That's just the way it is. |
