Sad to hear about YJ, but personally the line seemed doomed from the start. Hopefully, when TDKR hits, it will show that Mattel has learned a thing or two. Remember, toys generally have a 2-year turnaround from design/development to retail sales.

Mattel does a lot more than just DC toys, you know. Hot Wheels, Matchbox and Barbie, to name a few.

Jason Abbadon 04-10-2012 10:20 AM

So much for that nonsense of Mattel taking over MU! Two major failures...and they still did not get that crappy sculpts plus non-existant articulation for $10 was always going to fail.

NoodleChow 04-10-2012 10:33 AM

the smaller scale DKR toys don't show any signs of improvement. same old mattel arsenal of mehness.

I think you just owned mattel with that one hahaha. great custom!

Mumble-bee 04-10-2012 11:50 AM

Perhaps less expensive toys would have helped. Who spends $20 (at some stores) on a single 4" figure with a pointless accessory, when you can get two figures with a comic book or a 6" figure for $15?

Bryant University students partnered with a non profit called Wishes Come True to bring back a service learning cause called Project Playhouse. As part of the program, five dream playhouses were constructed by students from RI career and technical schools to benefit seriously ill children who live in the RI and Southeastern Massachusetts area.

Service Learning
Sep 2016 - Dec 2016
For a management class at Bryant University, students were challenged to work with nonprofits, find internal issues, and use critical thinking to solve them. Our team decided to work with Pets In Need, a new start up company that helps poor families get heavily discounted surgery for their pets. Our team decided to focus on Marketing and Grant writing, to not only increase the foot traffic of customers, but to hopefully get more donations to help the company run efficiently.

Business Plan
Feb 2016 - May 2016
This semester long project challenged students to come up with a product idea and build a whole business plan. I was the CEO of my company and oversaw the growth and development of the plan. I was also in change of the legal structure, accounting, and marketing sections of the plan. We spent the semester learning how to pitch ideas, how to market to different audience, and that failure happens. This project was a good safety net to make mistakes and learn from them.

My team was challenged to create a better experience for parents and children alike at "The Little Gym", an interactive play and gymnastics space for younger children. My team and I decided to talk to customers in the waiting room, and see what they wanted to see done differently. We redesigned the whole waiting room which dealt with child psychology and different marketing strategies to further the experience for…

The 2 year turnaround is a general practice, although, not set in stone. Companies have done 1 year turnarounds. The 1 year turnaround occurs in toys with media tie-ins. Hopefully these low-articulated low-selling 3.75" figures makes Mattel realize; the pressing need to do things differently.

Again if a designer could be hired to do things differently; hopefully we'll see a turnaround as little as 1 year. Next year has an opportunity in a media tie in - MAN OF STEEL: Superman movie. Mattel has TWICE the opportunity + reason to do this in 1 year. Next year is both Superman's 75th anniversary / new movie...

Having a media tie-in isn't a guarantee of a 1 year turnaround, either. Also, having more or less time to develop a line doesn't mean it will be good or bad. My point was maybe Mattel has had enough time to see what has become of their GL and YJ lines and adjusted TDKR's progress accordingly. However, that may not be the case. As you say, their next chance at redemption in the 3.75" scale may be Man of Steel.

Salsa Verde 04-10-2012 12:37 PM

Bad news if Mattel is banking on The Dark Knight Rises toy line to save them, I mean doesn't anyone remember how we had pegs upon pegs of different themed Batmen from the main Dark Knight line just sitting there gathering dust for months on end? I won't even mention the Superman Returns line.

Mattel just does not get it, at all. They don't deserve to have any licenced characters at all. The only hope is they go bankrupt and Hasbro absorbs them.

Yeah, I'm likewise hoping things has (with the time already spent) been turned around for the better. Especially with this recent news of YJ's cancellation. DC has a great roster of characters + movies. Its just the 3.75" figures could really use some help.

Well damn, this sucks! I didn't buy the 4" figures but am a fan of the 6" Select Series. Hope we can at least get them online.

DogFashionDisco 04-10-2012 02:32 PM

Mattel bad. Hasbro bad too.
Seriously though, the quality doesn't warrant the price. Heck, if I were still a kid and I had the choice between 6 of those lame Young Justice figures or a new video game, I'd pick the game too. No wonder figure sales are so poor, and I was dead serious when I made that Happy Meal comment earlier. I can literally go to a McDonalds right now and buy a Green Lantern figure for a $1, and it would be about the same quality as the ones recently sold at most retail stores.

Honestly, I'm glad because they were just way overpriced and lacking compared to similar scale lines from other companies.

CMIII 04-10-2012 03:54 PM

it's so sad I mean Mattel makes claims that these series are not profitable and yet many figures are hard to get. I had to actually Order Atom wave 19 DCUC online just to complete wave 19 and STRIPE I have all of wave 20 save Green and Red Arrow at Target. My local Wal Mart and Kmart have sucked with new figures. Of the Young Justice lines I have 2 figures of the Waves Speedy and Artimis though I display only Artimis. Thinking of getting Sportsmaster. In my Opinion they are Too Cartoony even for a Cartoon

Mattel, Dark Horse, and DC resign a contract in fall I'm starting to hope it expires and Hasbro takes over.

Haha

Not suprised. Price for DCU 6in figure is $15.99 and Batman legacy for $19.99.

Actually, that's precisely why these figures are hard to get. When toylines start to fail, few of the final figures appear at popular retail outlets. You're more likely to find them a year later at ROSS, Winners and those kinds of liquidation places. Some of the hardest to get figures in the vintage TMNT line are the final waves.

Didn't we already see evidence of the low quality level Dark Knight Returns 4 inch scale toys?

I think Mattel will do with the 4 inch scale the exact same thing they did with the 6 inch scale. Wait a solid 6 or 7 years; realize there could be a profit made, and then jump on the scale bandwagon just as MU is starting to fade out.

Avatar proved they can do decently articulated figures at the smaller scale. MU has proven that the 4 inch scale can be profitable, not just for movie tie-ins, but for a standard, comic based line, and Mattel has dried up their 6 inch character selection...

All signs point to Mattel figuring this out sooner than later. Or not.

I love the show but don't care for the look of the figures. Cartoon accurate but just don't like how the stylized look on toys. Same goes for the Clone Wars figures.

Yeah it's not like kids are asking their moms for the cartoony version. Usually, and keep in mind I'm going on what my 3yr old asks for, and what my 14yr old asked for when he was younger, kids ask for the better looking, and articulated figures. If I hand my 3 yr old a figure w/ less articulation than an MU he gets frustrated that he can't pose them the way he wants. Yes this is a 3, almost 4 yr old. No wonder Mattel's figure lines don't sell. They can't even keep a kid at the youngest age their toys are meant for happy.

Not surprised. If it's not a girl or young child product line they can't do it justice. Pun intended.

MOTUC is staying afloat only because it has a very hardcore fanbase. They ran Ghostbusters into the ground, they'll be running Voltron into the ground soon enough, and they can't do anything but be cheap at retail where they'll always claim the big bucks are.

Mattel Responds To Young Justice Toy Cancellation

Ravenxl7 04-11-2012 06:54 AM

Sucks for those that were actually interested in Young Justice. Personally I couldn't care less.

And for 2013, we’re planning an innovative collector-aimed line coming to retail stores.
Yeah, I'll believe that when I see the figures at retail. With what happened to the All-Stars line I'm not going to get interested in any of Mattel's future projects till they actually start hitting retail.

trebleshot 04-11-2012 07:27 AM

If by innovative, Mattel means they're going to ape Hasbro's MU for their new DC figures, then I'm all for it. Otherwise, I'm not sure how much more innovative they can get without crashing and burning again.

I do know that a "kid-targeted" TDKR toyline is not a good sign, especially if that's what they thought the 4" GL movie line was.

tlasjr 04-11-2012 08:54 AM

Im curious if the GL figures were profitable for Mattel. Clearly it failed with collectors but we were never their target.
My criticsm for them has always been for not trying to compete with MO in the collector market. hopefully the vauge hint for 2013 means they thnik there is a real market.
Hopefully they dont make the dcih mistake of lower quality at a higher price with little or no a or b list charecters in the first few waves.

neatogecko 04-11-2012 08:58 AM

I just wish Mattel would stop trying to make "kids" or "collectors" figures, and just make good figures.
