Actually, Taraka-Tomy still owns the worldwide copyright to Beastformers/Battle Beasts. Hasbro licensed the toys from them under the brand Battle Beasts in the 80's. So the Minimates versions would be a sequel of sorts to the original line.
It's similar to the Marvel Minimates, in that Hasbro has the main Marvel license but DST/Art Asylum has their own license for producing Marvel figures. |

I got two of the clear red ones at C2E2 on Friday. I haven't opened them, and I doubt I will, but they're pretty damn awesome.
