However, Mattel was screwed when Hasbro came out with Bucky Cap and it became the standard base body they used.

Yeah, it made sense until the recent Marvel Legends struck a great balance between sculpt and articulation. Specifically their joints where the upper legs meet the crotch are just really good. So now Mattel is just outdated. And of course, ankle pivot was invented too, which actually manages to take nothing from the sculpt, so Mattel just sucks.

It's strange how similar Hasbro and Mattel's situations have been in the past but the outcomes have been completely different. When Marvel Legends dwindled a few years ago, Hasbro really focused on their 3.75" Marvel Universe line to improve the sculpts and articulation. In fact, that's where the ankle pivot joint was first introduced. So when ML returned, Hasbro began churning out great figures. The first few waves were a mix of old and new but the new began to replace the old very quickly. Mattel on the other hand canceled DCUC, started the 3.75" DC Multiverse line, but never worked to improve anything. So when DC Multiverse changed back to 6", it was more of the same.

Interesting. How could they improve with 3.75" figs? They're much smaller, so wouldn't it be more difficult?

Mattel just doesn't care about its consumers mostly. MattyCollector was an awful idea, and prices were always jacked up for figures with one new part and no accessories (movie masters....). Castle Greyskull took forever to be made, and the Ecto-1 never even saw the light of day after 5 years of people waiting. And I've seen vids of their representative who shows off things from MattyCollector and they just don't care at all. The guy would get mad when the interviewer would ask reasonable questions.

It was more about being able to reuse bodies to make new figures that were actually good. Their first batch of figures ranged from decent to bad but they kept trying and even developed different sized bodies to suit certain characters. They also worked on using soft plastic pieces to add costume details so they didn't have to constantly retool body parts to suit certain characters. They were also able to experiment with reusing molds for larger characters. For instance, Juggernaut was turned into Thanos, Apocalypse, a Jack Kirby Hulk, and Skaar. The Rhino was turned into Abomination and A-Bomb. The AIM Soldier was turned into Star Lord. Classic Thor was turned into Beta Rey Bill.

By not being bound to Toybiz's work, Hasbro had freedom to try new things. And because of it, we have a totally awesome Marvel Legends line. And since this is a DC Icons thread, I'm going to loop the conversation back to DCC. Because Hasbro took the time to work on the Marvel Universe figures and developed the ankle pivot for their 3.75" figs, DC Collectibles saw that Hasbro was on to something great and began adding the ankle pivot to their own figures. It doesn't show up on all of DCC's figures but every single figure in the Icons line has ankle pivot.

Might pick up Cyborg and Static if I find them. Hopefully they aren';t too pricey.

metalalchemist 03-27-2017 06:34 PM

Ok, I hope maybe someone can help me...
I jumped into collecting these guys a couple of months ago since I saw the figures that were coming (Etrigan, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, etc)
Now, I see that there is a bunch of figures that got cancelled (such as Etrigan and the booster gold pack) and that the new Justice League pack is in a completely different scale.
So, what the hell is going to happen to the still pending figures that might make it to retail? Are they going to be upscaled and I wasted my money with the previous ones? Should I just stop trying to collect the ones I am still missing from previous waves?
Honestly I don´t want to collect a line that changes scales so quickly + I am feeling ripped off.

lordbest 03-27-2017 08:27 PM

So far only Etrigan is confirmed cancelled, and the upscaling isn't too significant. Jay C has reviews of them with comparisons between the various figures.

Jeddostotle7 03-27-2017 08:38 PM

They have been slowly upscaling the figures ever since people complained the first wave was undersized.

Jay C has talked to other retailers though and they have not received anything about Etrigan being canceled.

It's a mess right now because no one knows what is exactly going on. Lots of contradicting information and DCC has said jack shit about it.

I do see it significant, specially if I already have, lets say, Batman and Superman and I am waiting for Wonder Woman. She will be humongous.
My point is that newer figure won't go nicely with the previously released ones.

Dr Kain 03-28-2017 07:51 AM

So BBTS says Deathstroke will be shipping in the next 10 or so days. I hope this means Swamp Thing is right there with him.

Yeah cyborg, deathstroke, Wonder Woman, static shock and Swamp Thing are all supposed to be hitting Comic Shops April 5. Deathstroke has a unmasked head now which is pretty cool

metalalchemist 03-28-2017 08:23 AM

Seems they ditched the beautiful sculpt for wonder woman and kept the new monstruosity for the single carded one.
I don't get why it has always been so hard for them to make an "attractive" wonder woman in these scales.

All of which people assumed were cancelled at one point.

Most people seemed to feel them being underscaled was more significant and wanted them to match better with other 6" lines.

What's wrong with the new Wonder Woman sculpt? It looks fine to me, nothing monstrous about it.

Oh great, I'm not even going to be home on the 5th as we're driving out to MN.

Damn sorry man. The only ones they have in packaged pictures of are Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Deathstroke. So it's not a for sure thing about the others but they are still slated for the 5th

I don't plan on going all in on these especially considering the lack of information regarding what's coming and what has been cancelled, but I did go ahead and pick up Joker and Lex to compliment the Justice League pack that is on the way from EE.

I'm working on a Hall of Justice that should be wrapped up before the 7 pack arrives, and I will definitely get some pictures posted on here.

Lex forgot the pepperoni on the pizza?

Ok, maybe not monstrous, but definitely not as good looking as the one they announced. That was the only wonder woman I have ever been interested in.

metalalchemist 03-29-2017 09:41 AM

BTW, according to toynews, they cancelled shazam, sinestro and deadshot too.
DC Icons 6" Deadshot, Sinestro & Shazam Figures Officially Canceled By DC Collectibles - - Action Figures Toys News ToyNewsI.com

I was planning on buying Dark Adam when I got Shazam, but now... I am really wondering if I should continue collecting these.

K Dubious 03-29-2017 10:55 AM

I know I picked the worst time to start collecting these, but thankfully I am not a huge DC fan and growing up I felt like DC was the Justice League and whoever was helping them out. I am fine not having every DC person represented in my collection, but after toying with the two villains I have I am looking forward to the 7 figure set. I wish they had some extra hands so that they could hold onto some of the accessories that are already out there, but closed fists work well enough I guess.
