The Odin wave is also up on HTS as "coming soon"

Spyne98 01-20-2015 08:35 PM

Anyone else worried that they'll have to split their display in two once the dust from Secret Wars clears? Like pre-reset and post-reset. I know what my buddy who collects DC is going through now lol.

ChuckSass 01-21-2015 08:30 AM

No, its not a reset, its an amalgamation of all of the universes on one plane of existence.

I think its awesome. I just hope my favourites come out unscathed, and Hopefully the real 616 Jean Grey comes back

At the moment, I'm not really worried since this won't be a heavy reset like the New 52 was for DC. Marvel has always felt the need to make their comics more like the movies which is what this new Secret Wars series sounds like. The MCU was based off the regular Marvel Universe with a dash of Ultimate Marvel in it so I would expect that to be the formula for the new MU.

decepticon_mark 01-21-2015 09:04 AM

I fully expect the resulting "universe" will definitely be a more movie "friendly" one where there will be less confusion for the masses between the comics and the movies. Sad but we knew it was coming with all the little tweeks over recent years to characters in the comics.

VashTS 01-21-2015 11:47 AM

Agreed the will align the comics with the movie. I always wanted them to do the Hulk origin like the TV series with Bill Bixby.

But outside of that this is a cash grab with trying to make the movie verse the main verse. I wonder how PC they will make the new verse. Will Doc Ock be black Asian. Will Electro look like Jamie Fox. Will the Xmen be replaced by the Inhumans permanently.

Not sure if I'll like that if they really make the MU and turn it into it's movie counterpart...I guess it's a good thing I stopped buying comics...and recently off loaded a bunch.

Ditto. If I hadn't stopped collecting a while back, I would be absolutely livid right now and preparing to take a break from books. I'm glad that I, for the most part, only collect TPB's of old stories, selectively picking which modern epics to digest (Infinity wasn't very good at all IMO...don't believe the hype...and I'm debating whether or not to consume Original Sin). The best thing about my shift in focus is the wealth of great stories to be found in Marvel's Bronze, Silver, and Golden ages (although I admit some of the Golden age stuff is pretty dated). In my opinion, what's wrong with Marvel books are the lack of continuity (within itself, aside from the flicks) and the green-lighting of any and everything...we need a real editor in chief at Marvel. Stan Lee may have been a jackass, but he knew what he was doing and respected the history of the Marvel continuum

Those old stories can be pretty great. And best of all they aren't weighed down by having to be tied into an "event" story the way every book is now. If you're not looking for digital comics, check out the "Essential" Marvel books. They're the old Silver and Bronze Age stories in black and white on newsprint. You get about 20 issues a book.

I hate the whole green lighting of everything too. When you get to the point where your writers say "We need to shake things up to keep telling stories", you need to get some new writers. Moving the character forward and making them go through trials and changes is good for a book obviously but publicity stunts aren't.

ultraman zoffy 01-21-2015 05:12 PM

jwyss nailed it... with almost every story being part of an event, I've found that the most entertaining books out right now are the "standalone" character oriented books. The new Ms. Marvel book, the Surfer book, Hawkeye, etc.. these and a few other titles still seem to have the same fun adventure vibe I used to get reading comics in my younger days. Most of Marvel's events the past few years have followed a formula of "great start, crappy/unsatisfying ending"; they just can't seem to keep things going through to the end on most of them.

decepticon_mark 01-21-2015 05:34 PM

While I love a good event storyline. I have to say those old Essential books are great. Simple and easy stories to read and get lost in but not confused in. I rarely read comics anymore but the last event I read that I truly enjoyed was Shadowland.

En Sabah Nerd 01-21-2015 06:27 PM

I am also displeased with how "events" can really drag down other books. Especially if the event in question winds up being disappointing like AXIS, AvX, Infinity, or Age of Ultron. These comics aren't even necessarily bad, they're just built up to be so much and turn out to be so little. This is why I always go back to Abnett and Lanning cosmic as a well-structured chain of events. All the cosmic books from Annihilation to the Thanos Imperative had a real nice flow as far as being tied into the bigger picture the events anchored. I suppose it was a big help that the cosmic set stories are so detached from the rest of the comics, they had their own entire playground to exclusively mess with.

kylactus 01-21-2015 07:15 PM

I wouldn't say the problem is an "unsatisfying" ending. I'd call it no ending, with one event into another into another. some characters being overplayed to the point of nausea, (I'm looking at you Deadpool! do we need a Deadpool variant cover to every issue of every comic!?!) and the constant rebranding of main title characters like Thor and Cap, and side shifting from good to evil and back almost weekly to the point where it's the crux of a huge story line! I'm just glad Wolverine didn't live to see how bad it's gotten.

I posted that on your wall almost 10 months ago, man! LOL...well, I got mine (DD) shortly before Christmas. He's awesome, but a little too big.

Nice spoof of the movie Galactus! I know your penchant for movie figs has you searching high and low for this box of cottony goodness! Try eBay! ;)

I know, I suck :D Life got really hectic around then though, and I don't really notice notifications since it kinda blends into the background (hintity hint hint, Toyark moderators...) I wish I could take credit for that Galactus though, I just found it while I was searching for custom ideas for the big G. (I'm probably just gonna break down and get the variant MU Galactus with the Ultimate Alliance colorscheme). Also, to VashTS: Was that Doc Ock being black Asian based off a comic? I'm relatively caught up on Spidey stuff, but is there a new Doctor Octopus running around?

marvelmando 01-21-2015 07:40 PM

Ok, because this thread is supposed to be dedicated to toys, I have been reluctant to chime in.
However, I think that the big events tying into the rest of the comic lines has been a trend for 20 years or so. Secret Wars gave us the symbiote which has been evolving ever since. We had Extinction, House of M, Civil War, Skrull Invasion, Siege, Dark Reign, Age of Ultron, Infinity, and so on. My point is that they will never end and they help to build continuity into the Marvel Universe. I agree some of the arcs aren't as satisfying like Infinity. I was generally disgusted with the way in which Thanos was portrayed in that. But it has helped to set up events that continue to unfold. I have been more satisfied tying the stories together, like what has been building in the Avengers and New Avenges with the incursions and now the Months To Go that is undoubtedly leading to Secret Wars.
I mean, they are comics and Marvel is a company so they have to build hype to continue to bait in new readers and ones that have left for a while. So I will forgive a lot, even the death of the Watcher.
Make mine Marvel. Excelsior!

True, this has gone a little off topic, BUT it has been said that Hasbro is attached to make tie-in products to the series! Man, could you imagine a whole line of alternate universe ML's!? Earth X Captain America, 1602 Spidey, Marvel Zombies Giant-Man... oh, a guy can dream... :D also, looks like we have confirmation on Daredevil's billy clubs being separate pieces!

@jwyss234

I have collected Marvel Essentials since they came out and I really enjoy them, despite the lack of color. I have the two Essential Silver Surfer tomes, many of the Avengers, and most of the Defenders. I agree about the gimmicky nature of event-oriented stories. My nostalgia is attached to late 70's to early 90's comic material, the height of my collecting and enthusiasm. I understand my inherent bias, but also make room for modern stellar efforts.

@ultraman zoffy

I just picked up the new Silver Surfer TPB (collecting the first 8 issues - I think) and I'm absolutely loving the story. A little campier than my usual preference, but I've digested Surfer "camp" in the past, so I can look past that fact. However, as I've mentioned many times on this very thread, I'm quite partial to Surfer! :D ...also, you couldn't be more right about standalone character focused stories...and Ms Marvel!

@En Sabah Nerd

I think you captured why I've been turned off from "event" driven stories. Many of them do start strong: Civil War, Fear Itself, AvsX, and Age of Ultron. The frustrating part is that you can almost cite the issue or page where it becomes obvious that the writer no longer gives a damn about the story.

@Black Arbor

No worries, man! I was havin' fun wit' ya! I hope things have settled down a bit for you. I did notice your absence from the forum at that time. Did you get DD?

@marvelmando

Sorry to sidetrack the thread, Mando. I have no problem with an event done well. Infinity Gauntlet (War and Crusade were stinkers! lol) , Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, and War of Kings were all favorites of mine (note the common thread here; I luvs some Cosmic Marvel!). I was there for Secret Wars, and honestly, even as a kid, I thought it sucked. I'm not suggesting that creative ideas cannot come out of an event. What I don't care for is the formulaic approach that the phenomenon has devolved into. Can anyone say cash grab?

...is it possible to talk to everyone on a thread? LOL end sidetrack..

Eh, I think you handled talking to everyone fairly well! Yeah, things have settled down, now I'm back in the swing of things, haha. Unfortunately though, I don't have that DD, I found that picture on the MarvelousNews website, apparently it's from a Japanese seller on eBay, so hopefully this means they're on their way overseas! I can't wait to start pestering the Toys R Us employees! :D

TheBlueMarvel 01-21-2015 08:43 PM

@Black Arbor

Ha! I meant Doomsday, dude! I know....not the right thread for that question...sometimes, I don't follow the rules! ;)

Back on track: That's good news about Daredevil! I'm looking forward to him!
