Don't Move - An interesting Netflix movie about a suicidal woman who ends up getting kidnapped by a serial killer who paralyzes her with a poison and she has to fight hard for her life. It's odd because it's only 86 minutes without a credits, and yet, it still felt like it dragged on in a few places. Still, it was interesting and worth a one time watch.

The Substance - It was really good despite the last 20 or so minutes losing me a bit. I wished it had gone more psychological as opposed to the physical it did. Still, I'm glad I got to see it in theaters and the soundtrack was damn good. That might be my favorite soundtrack of the year.

Night of the Demons - It wasn't bad. It also had some really cool cinematography with a broken mirror and some strobe lighting. The acting was terrible, but the movie had some legitimate moments of suspense.

Dr Kain 10-29-2024 09:30 PM

Trick r Treat - I haven't watched this one in several years so it was nice to finally do so again. It's such an incredible movie that really keeps you guessing on the chronology of events like a Boogiepop adventure. It's a shame we never got a sequel.

Dr Kain 11-05-2024 04:51 PM

A fitting day to watch V for Vendetta. 10/10

I really thought by now we'd have gotten one.

Just realized I have not posted in here all month.

Let's see, I've been rewatching the Godzilla franchise. Have gotten through the first 13 movies so far. Great stuff.

The Raimi Spider-man trilogy. The first movie is a damn amazing film. I am not a fan of some of their casting choices, specifically for MJ and Harry, but Maguire is a pretty solid Peter and his Spidey in this film is great too. Norman, Jameson, and May are utter perfection. I am not a fan of the organic web shooters, however, as I just don't understand why they felt this was a necessary change when it diminishes Peter's scientific mind. Regardless, it's a solid first adventure that does so much right on top of providing the best Spider-Man soundtrack ever.

Spider-Man 2 is another solid adventure, albeit it an extremely flawed one. The plot of Peter losing his powers from a mental breakdown makes little sense and Dunst is even worse here than she was in the first movie. Molina is wonderful as Doc Ock and he gives a solild performance. The action scenes are top notch, especialy the one on the train despite the wonky CGI. It's fun and hits a lot of the right notes. The problem is some of the negatives really take away from the film as the acting is sometimes cringy while Peter rarely quips as Spidey in this one. Where are the hilarious lines like, "That's a cute outfit, did your husband make it for you?" to distract his enemies? He's almost silent throughout the film when he is Spider-Man. The other thing I have mixed feelings on is all of the Raimi-isms like the constant screaming in front of the camera to the sequence where Ock's arms are going Evil Dead on the doctors. Still, it is a very entertaining film and that shot of Peter when he has trashed his spider suit is perfection.

And the last one I have watched so far is the Editor's Cut to Spider-Man 3. Church was perfectly cast for Sandman while Grace is an utter embarassment for Brock. It's also weird because Robbie and Jameson already told us Eddie was working for them in the first movie, but then here is he working for them for the very first time. Not sure what the deal is with that, but okay. This movie is a mess, and while the Editor's Cut does make some very smart alterations, it doesn't fix the fact that this film is boring. MJ is completely unlikable in this film as she has become a complete selfish bitch. Harry's character is done better in this cut of the film thanks to a later scene being removed, however, this should have been its own movie. I honestly think the best parts of this film are when Peter is possessed by the symbiote because Maguire seems to be having so much fun pretending to be what a nerdy introvert would think being cool entails. I do like the casting for Gwen and her dad. It's just that there is so much crap crammed in here it's a mess, especially the final battle and those news report sequences are awful, pulling you out of the immersion. I have no idea why they thought they were a good idea. I will take it over almost every from MCU Phase 4 though.

Anyway, the way I would have done Spider-Man 3 would have had Harry giving Kingsley the gear to become Hobgoblin while he tries to figure his feelings out. He then comes to realize his mistakes and joins in on the final battle against Hobby, sacrificing himself to save Peter. Hobby gets away. This movie could have also introduced Eddie and his competitive nature with Peter. The movie would end with John Jameson going up into space.

Fourth movie features John bringing the symbiote back to Earth with Sandman trying to retrive it to make money for his daughter's operation. We can still have the whole revelation about Uncle Ben, driving Peter's emotions into a tizzy that causes the symbiote to bond with him. Movie ends with Peter getting rid of the symbiote and it attaches to Eddie.

Fifth movie Venom.

The Crow - I know nothing about the original movie beyond Brandon Lee died during filming, Sting dressed up as the character in WCW for like a year, and Trini from MMPR was in its sequel. As such, I have no history with the franchise to be blinded by nostalgia. With that in mind, oh my god, this movie sucked. It was a complete mess, especially in the first hour where random events were just happening and I had no idea what was going on.

First, it starts off with some girl yelling at another girl on the phone over some video, but we have no idea what this video entails. She gets arrested and then suddenly it jumps to Pennywise cosplaying as Jared Leto's Joker and he is in some prison and the girl is just there for some reason. They escape because the place has like no security outside at all and it seems like months go by of them making out and going to parties and camping while the villains act like only days have passed. Then they get killed and he goes to some realm that makes him a zombie man and he can travel back and forth between the two.

There's a villain dude who can apparently control people to kill themselves or kill other people, but he's not developed in the slightest and all we have is some throway line that he has been around for thousands of years. I guess he's Ra's Al Ghul with the powers of Purple Man or something. Anyway, the only good scene of the entire movie was Pennywise killing a shit ton of dudes at an opera house because for some reason the villains are there. The ending made no sense either, but by that point I was ready for the movie to be over. It truly is the worst movie I have seen this year, though I have not watched Borderlands and Hellboy yet, which I hear are worse. The acting was pathetically bad, especially from the girlfriend who dies. I feel like they just random saw someone walking past their studio and asked her if she wanted to be in their movie because they were desperate.

So yeah, unless you must watch this, do NOT waste your time!!

Dr Kain 11-24-2024 07:04 PM

We knocked out the two Amazing movies today.

1 - I have so many mixed feelings on this one. They tried to go darker with Spider-Man and make it more serious, which just doesn't work. Garfield was completely miscast as Peter as his Peter is terrible. He's too cool to be Peter. Peter is not supposed to be riding around on a skateboard. Alternatively, I love how much quipping he does. His scene messing with the car jacker is just superb. Anyway, on one hand, I understand why they didn't repeat the same origin story for Peter being a wrestler, on the other, not doing it took away the impact of him being responsible for Ben's death. Not to mention they completely dropped that plot point before the last act as he never found the culprit and the dude is never mentioned again. Connor's Lizard plot moves at too quick of a pace and feels half-baked. Now I do like the fact that they had Gwen instead of MJ and Stone was perfect casting for her. Perhaps the only actor that feels spot on. I also like that she wasn't a damsel in distress. It's not a bad film, but now having the Raimi movies completely fresh in my mind, it's not good either. The soundtrack is especially subpar. However, it's slightly better than Raimi 3.

2 - This is the first time I have watched this film since I saw it in theaters 10 years ago and everything I liked before, I still liked. Everything I hated then, was even worse now. So what is good about this one? Well the chemistry between Stone and Garfield remains spectacular. I love seeing Peter do science with trying to figure out how to stop his webshooters from getting destroyed by Electro. The soundtrack is an improvement over the first one. And finally, the fight scene are well shot and well choroegraphed. I loved the shots of Spidey diving down and how the camera follows him.

The bad? Well, practically everything else. The actor they got for Harry is atrocious and phones in his entire performance. His characterization makes no sense and I don't get why they killed Norman off minutes after debuting him. I still can't believe they bothered to have Giamatti come in for Rhino and have him act like some low rent amateur from a talent show. He clearly was there to collect a paycheck and nothing more. Ripping off Batman Forever for Electro was a big mistake and, like with Giamatti, completely undermined Foxx's talent. Aunt May is bad, really bad. Perhaps the worst iteration of her ever. The character designs are awful, I thought Harry's wannabe Rocket Racer motif in Raimi 3 was crap, but this Goblin design was adverse. The plot is a convoluted mess, but worse, like with Raimi 3, it's so fucking boring!! I also felt it was too soon to kill Gwen off.

I will most likely never watch this duo again as they are not worth your time.

Dr Kain 11-27-2024 10:25 PM

Planes Trains and Automobiles - A really fun film that is as heart wrenching as it is funny. I also learned today that it has a post-credit scene.

Weapon X 11-27-2024 11:38 PM

My Old Ass: Amazing, I cried.

Star Trek 09: Still an amazing movie.

Star Trek Nemesis: Bad. Couldn't finish it.

Star Trek Beyond: I dislike this movie.

Dr Kain 11-28-2024 11:54 PM

We decided to spend today watching all three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies.

Homecoming - Despite taking place after Civil War, this movie is such a great standalone story that really dives into the persona of this version of Peter. He's a high schooler and Holland completely embodies it from the mannerisms to his introverted nature when it comes to talking to others. I love his quippage and his desire to be the best hero possible. Vulture is a fantastic villain who is very relatable, especially in our current economy. I completely agree with his decision and ALL of the DOD deserved to be punched in the face, especially the fucking little cunt who spoke to him like he was a child. The sequence with Vulture and Peter in the car on the way to homecoming was really intense. Also, the webwings, the freaking webwing!!! Oh my god, that was so awesome. I love the design of his Spidey suit. However, I also love how he has to prove himself in the last act of the movie with his own homemade suit. My main nitpicks include the forgettable soundtrack and how many times he takes his mask off.

Far From Home - This pains me because you can watch Homecoming without having seen Civil War, but this movie makes no sense if you have no watched Infinity War and Endgame. As such, that really hurts its narrative because you can't enjoy it as just as sequel to Homecoming. Mysterio is awesome, at least until the plot twist is revealed, then he loses some of his luster. I like that he was playing everyone, as that is something Mysterio would do, but then he disdains his entire role, digging on wearing a costume and crap, which is bullshit. Some of the movie calls back to other MCU films are nice, but again, that means you can't just enjoy this film without watching other movies. The action scenes and effects are top notch though, with some really impressive sequences. The fight in Mysterio's hologram world is nothing short of amazing. One of the best sequences in any live action Spider-Man story ever. However, I hate how irresponsible they make the two teachers on this trip in Europe and the reveal as to why Fury was an utter moron is made worse by what happens in the future of the MCU with garbage like Secret Invasion. Again, another moment that ruins this movie because you have to see something else to get the full story. Thankfully, the Peter stuff with MJ is nicely told and well acted that it distracts you from the negatives. The ending with Jameson is such a great cliffhanger though. Oh, I'm not a fan of how Spidey rarely quips in this film either.

No Way Home - Thankfully, you don't need to see 40,000 other movies to enjoy this one. In fact, unlike with FFH, having seen the other Spider-Man movies only enhance the enjoyment while nothing is lost if you have not. It's the ultimate live action Spider-Verse film that smartly focused on Holland's Peter and let everyone else act as an extention to his tale. I do not like how Lizard and Sandman were 100% CGI at all times even to when they are reverted back to their human forms. Surely they could have gotten Church and Ifans on set for one bloody day, right? Nevertheless, Doctor Strange is used very as he doesn't overstay his welcome nor do the appearances of Garfied and Maguire, who show up when they needed to and give the advice Holland's Peter needed. I love the camaraderie between the trio. Peter makes the ultimate sacrifice and it fits, sealing the deal of this being the best Spider-Man trilogy to date despite its flaws. Additionally, Garfield's Spidey got to redeem himself for his failure to save Gwen, Fox got to redeem his Electro into being a badass, and it was great to see Molina and Dafoe back.

I cannot wait to see where the Holland series goes from here. We now have a nice origin trilogy done that we can finally get to completely stand alone Spider-Man stories that do not have to try to be Avenger level films. I'd like to see a trilogy revolving around Hobgoblin with Kingsley using the tech Tobey Norman left behind. Also finally bringing in Scorpion and having Peter get a job with the Bugle.

Anyway, now that I have finished the Spider-Man movies with fresh eyes I have a new ranking for them:

1. No Way Home
2. Spider-Man
3. Homecoming
4. Spider-Man 2 (though it's kind of interchangeable with Homecoming)
5. Far From Home
6. Amazing
7. Spider-Man 3
8. Amazing 2

For fun, here is how I rank the villains of the Spider-Man movies:

1. Raimi Goblin
2. Vulture
3. Doc Ock
4. Mysterio
5. Electro
6. Sandman
7. Lizard
8. Shocker
9. Venom
10. Amazing Goblin

The great thing though is you have some really solid Spider-Man adventures. If you want something that really fits the core of Spider-Man without having to watch non-Spidey movies, there's the Raimi trilogy. If you want to see how an interestingly fun take on the character that is set in the midst of a larger universe of heroes, the Home trilogy does a wonderful job of covering that. If you want to see a grittier, darker take on Spider-Man, you've got to Garfield duo. They all have their positives, they all have their negatives, but if there is one thing all three of them do that annoy me it is that Peter seems to quip less as each series progresses. Total missed opportunity for things like, "Problems with your laser, Beck? I've heard they have pills for that now," "Electro, before I die I want you to know that you're the greatest enemy that I've ever faced. No, wait, I was thinking of someone else. I hardly ever give you a second thought.", and "<in a mocking voice> Squash the bug, squash the bug. Don’t you know any other tunes?"

Dr Kain 11-30-2024 10:01 PM

North by Northwest - The new 4K transfer of this film is simply stunning. It's also nice that the film is finally in its proper aspect ratio. It may not be Hitchock's best, but it is such a great movie that gets better with every viewing. 9/10

Good ranking. Though I think Spiderman 1 is still the best for me.

It's definitely a tough call as 1 is so damn good and a movie I have watched like 50 times. It was the first Superbit DVD I bought after I learned what Superbit was and I watched it so many times over on that. Sadly, I haven't watched the movie that often over the last decade, but I hope to change that going forward. We're actually streamlining our movie collection on what do we truly want rather than just having movies for the sake of it. If it's a movie from a franchise we watch every 1-2 years, it's definitely a keeper. If its a specialty release, especially from a boutique label, also a keeper. Anything from certain directors like John Carpenter, Tarantino, or Hitchcock, keeper.

Anyway, today we watched Godzilla 84 and Scrooged. Both are great movies.

Dr Kain 12-08-2024 10:18 PM

Bob Clark double feature of Black Christmas and A Christmas Story. Damn good stuff!!

Dr Kain 12-13-2024 11:24 PM

Slumber Party Massacre - Okay? It was kind pretty mediocre, but had a few good moments in it. The killer was really dumb and boring though. He looked like a mute Ian Holme.

Slumber Party Massacre II - The fuck did I just watch????? The first 55 minutes was so god damn boring and then it just goes off the rails for the remaining 20 minutes I can't tell if I should be terrified due to how god damn stupid it was or applaud it for how god damn stupid it was.

WallySparks 12-16-2024 08:22 PM

the animated Superman movie Reign of the Supermen on Tubi. I thought it was pretty good since its more base on the New 52 stuff from a few years ago.

Weapon X 02-04-2025 07:13 PM

Wicked. Wow, amazing!!! It's now one of my favorite movies. I almost didn't see it due to pre-conceived hate for it, but boy was I wrong!! And this is coming from someone who really disliked the stage version.

diablogunner 02-05-2025 08:10 AM

Freaky w/ Vince Vaughn - Crazy and fun and Vince plays a teenage girl well

Totally Killer - 80's slasher film meets Back to the Future with Sabrina the Teenage witch. I loved it.

WallySparks 02-14-2025 08:12 PM

watched So I Married an Axe Murderer on Tubi two days ago. still a good decent comedy horror flick with Mike Myers in it.

been a long time since i saw the movie from back then. At first i thought Harriet was being suspicious of Charlie being a horny serial killer or something

Dr Kain 02-23-2025 05:47 PM

The Monkey - Well, it's not the worst King adaptation I've ever seen...

Dr Kain 04-18-2025 10:12 PM

Sinners is the first movie of the year that is genuinely amazing!!! I need to see it again.

Weapon X 04-20-2025 03:39 PM

Batman Forever. Such a treasure.

Dr Kain 05-26-2025 08:49 PM

Sinners again - perfection

Final Destination 6 - Not too bad

Dial M for Murder - While it isn't anywhere near Hitchcock's best, it's a fantastic movie.

Class of 1999 - A trio of robots become teachers. After 2 days of teaching high school they decide to kill the students. Sounds about right. It actually wasn't a terrible movie. It was so bad it was kind of good, though, I liked the plot better when it was called Akira. Still, fun enough to be worth a one time watch.

Dr Kain 06-17-2025 09:44 PM

Dr No - Oh my god this looks so amazing in 4K!! A great start to the Bond franchise.

From Russia With Love - This is hands down my favorite Bond movie of all time and it just simply looks gorgeous in 4K. I love how Grant has a presence through the entire film before confronting Bond, making him one of the franchise's best villains. Some of Tatiana's acting is iffy, but for the most part is a solid female companion. There are a lot of well shot sequences from the battle at the gypsy camp to the one when Grant is follow Bond from inside the train car in the background.

Dr Kain 06-18-2025 09:41 PM

Goldfinger - I know everyone praises this movie as the greatest Bond movie ever made, and I can totally get why. It does everything right. Goldfinger himself is a very threatening villain. it breaks the tropes the first two movies incorporated, it becomes the formula that would become a staple of the formula, and it finds its footing. Still, as amazing as it is, I think From Russia with Love is a more enjoyable film.

Wonderfully corny. I like it too. There's a sense of subtle sophistication to the humor that modern inane silliness cannot replace. :D
