I don't like this war machine still

TheBlueMarvel 02-15-2015 05:08 PM

In the immortal words of ol' Grady Wilson, "great googly moogly!!"

WTF, Hasbro?! With this new 'Legends' line we are approaching unprecedented diversity in fan service. I'm flabbergasted! I'm almost scared at all of this good fortune...the cynic in me is waiting for the the other shoe to drop, or to wake up from a very pleasant (damn near wet) dream to a horrifyingly crushing reality...

So many awesome's:

Grim Reaper (classic)
Misty Knight (WTF?!...awesome!)
White Tiger
Ghostrider (classic)
Rhino (damn...that Rhino tho')
Vison
3pk Vison (classic West Coast Avengers!..did not see that coming)
Kraven (damn...that Kraven tho')
Thundra (am I being greedy now that I want/need a Titania?)
Ultron (that's a movie figure I can do)
3pk Ultron (definite improvement)
3pk Hulk (I've read dismissals of the fig...whatever, I want that Hulk more than the Ruffalo version)

and...say it ain't so...I want two figs I normally wouldn't advocate for:

Iron Man (Marvel Now)
Hulkbuster (movie)

All of this on top of everything we already knew of...and we haven't even touched the GotG 5pk? Ohhh what am I to do with myself?

Hasbro seems committed to separating itself from the competition. I'm not one to celebrate corporations, but Hasbro has given me more than enough to celebrate this line. Bravo....'Gaster' done 'flabbered!'

Phantomcrow 02-15-2015 08:58 PM

Also I am gonna need 3 of that Chameleon in the Spidey series 2 so I can have a JJ and a Hammerhead as separate figures.

Well I will not focus on the negative, amazing pics. I for one loved the Vision and like the Marvel Now? Iron Man. I am always weary and hope another price increase is NOT coming. And so far this wave has been easy to find in stores.

Was hoping for that rumored 3 pack Spidey and Friends...but their is still SDCC for that. Also, maybe next year...wanted to hear about a Jim Lee Cyke...or a repainted Jim Lee Wolverine.

I don't know exactly how the math works out, but from what I've heard the plastic prices and all that stuff have balanced out to the point that making the larger figures is not all that much more costly than making the little figures, but they provide a bigger profit margin due to their higher price. So the retailers and manufacturers are starting to be all about the larger (6"+) figures again, while the 3.75"/4" offerings are starting to dwindle (particularly the highly articulated/accessorized types) because there's a much thinner profit margin at the $10-$12 price range they seem to hover at nowadays.

donmeca2020 02-15-2015 09:04 PM

so does anybody know when these new legends will be available? particularly the next spidey wave.

The economist in me wishes I could see the production costs and profit margins. I would think it would be the other way around especially with how much less plastic is usually in a 4"ish figure... But the way the 1/18 scale is going you may be right.

What many collectors don't realize (or don't want to acknowledge) is that our figure interest/hobby supports the fossil fuel industry. While the figs we love aren't directly made from crude oil, they are products that fit squarely in the category of petroleum based subsidiaries. When the price of oil drops, theoretically, so should the price of figures (with the inverse/opposite also being true). Lower gas prices should directly affect things like figure prices, provided the manufacturer/producer doesn't engage in 'gouging' tactics (yeah, right). It's something I've come to accept, in spite of my commitment to the expansion of green energy and the environment (I understand the hypocrisy imbedded in that statement, but we all tacitly embrace some demons). The silver lining is that we don't (normally) discard these items polluting the environment. However, we do enrich companies that a number of us would not normally want to endorse. Then again, we do the same thing when we purchase gas (and many other consumer goods)...sorry to be a 'Debbie Downer.'

I'm not disappointed in one single figure Hasbro announced. Everything looks awesome, and everything is getting bought.

With you on that... I might not buy every figure, but everything revealed has been amazing.

Starlord67 02-16-2015 03:58 AM

Now that we are getting a barefoot buck with the White Vision... My wish list starts anew with a redo for Namor and a Shang Chi figure come SDCC!!

Yes we need a new Namor, the Hasbro version sucks and the Toybiz version is off scale but the better among the two available version, so we need an update!!

That iron fist pic with the flames is amazing....

I know the Spidey wave will hit the East in a week.

TF Hulkbuster looks insane. I liked the Marvel Now IM, and keys hope the prototypes are accurate and retains the great paint jobs.

Well, these numbers and margins are totally made up, but to illustrate what I'm talking about:

Say a fully articulated 3.75" figure costs $3.00 for Hasbro to manufacture. They sell it to Wal-Mart for $4.50. (Profit Margin of $1.50 for Hasbro) It sells for $9.99-$12.99 in the store, for a profit margin of $5.49-$8.49 for the Retailer.

Now say a fully articulated 6" figure costs Hasbro $5.00 to make. They sell it to Wal-Mart for $7.00 ($2.00 profit for Hasbro), and it sells for $19.99, for a profit margin of $12.99 for the retailer. Now even though the 6" technically costs more to make, it's much more desirable to both Hasbro and the Retailer.

Also? With the new packaging for their 6" figures, Marvel Legends don't take much (if any) more space on shelves than 3.75" figures did/do (which used to be a reason retailers didn't like 6" figures as much...they want to be able to cram as much product as they can into those aisles).

I know its all speculation but theres no way its just a $2 difference to manufacture a 3.75" and a 6" fig :D. I see your point there but as you state ML figs cost more to make, that includes the entire figure and packaging. I dont think its about entirely about profit that pushes this product but what the development team pushes the company to produce. As of now the dev team favors the 6" line.

kylactus 02-16-2015 12:36 PM

you also have to account for the fact that you can usualy move greater quantities of 3.75" figures. so a consumer who would hesitate to spend 40$ on two unique figures might prefer to get two for 20-24$ and even by jmacq's math that's a 50% better profit for the manufacturer. also, the price of plastic has very little to do with production cost. the PVC composites toys are made of cost less than a dollar a pound. so your average figure of any scale is only a couple cents worth of plastic. the paint costs more. but your big expense is in tooling her there are two issues that make 6" figures more cost prohibitive to produce, size, as a large mold costs a lot more to produce (more metal, and more actual tooling) and, well... size again as you can fit fewer molds into an injection machine per shoot, so you get fewer parts per press, which means more man hours to produce the same number of 6" units as opposed to 3.75", or now 2". you could also factor in things like amount of paint, and detail required to produce something that looks good in 6" scale (the bigger you go the more detail you need), plus there is no way around it, you need more packaging for bigger figures. I just can't see how Hasbro makes the 6" scale more economically viable than 3.75.
