If they would put all these supposed A-listers that they were going to put in CIE at retail instead, they'd sell.

They'll figure it out when the new cartoon-y 6" line fails. It'll be kinda like when Marvel Legends went through a slump a few years ago. Maybe they can trickle out a few two-packs to Toys R Us. We'll be starved/hungry for DCUC and we'll take whatever we can get. Even repacks and repaints. Like Superboy with a straight-up re-release of Superman. "Father and Son" -- Damian with a rerelease of Batman. Straight rerelease of Fire (or retool in a different outfit) with Ice. Both versions of Doomsday for SDCC next year. Not sure what to do with Aquaman. . .unless they'd go for making Mera too.

Then maybe they'll resurrect when Superman 2 comes out in 2015. 2014 will be slow, but they could make money on these still with little effort.

But I know they've already gone the two-pack route before, and they've probably turned off retailers to them, due to poor product choice.

--Yellow Hal and Blue Kyle -- basically two repaints
--red AzBats and blue Batman -- again, basically repaints
--Supergirl and Lex -- repaints, with kryptonite (ooh! aah!)
--Parasite and Superman -- straight rereleases
--Hawkgirl and Gentleman Ghost -- straight rereleases
--Aquaman and Black Manta -- repaints

Give us one NEW figure (that they've already "made"; to make the purchase compelling) and a rerelease of a core character and they'd sell. At least I'd buy them. And I'd rather pay $35 or $40 at retail for that than nearly $27 each through the club.

Toy Guru, please feel free to take my idea. I won't sue for plagarism.

CMIII 08-20-2013 06:52 PM

No they should do no Retail line at all. You do not want them why send something to a store people clearly do not want. If you really wanted them you would have subbed.

Kain I BLAME people who did nothing not Mattel people who didn't Subscribe caused it to fail plain and simple. If you wanted this line to keep going people needed to step up and DIDN'T. MOTU went though because their people stepped up it's apparent the people who post in this section who didn't step up would rather have nothing then take a chance.

Goodbye to the best action figure line on the market

I will only buy online and finish off the DCUC spending twice the club price on figures already out and wont waste time going to a store who wont carry the line. Sorry but those who didn't sign up failed mattel

Dr Kain 08-20-2013 08:43 PM

Dude, no one is required to sub. Just because they love the line does not mean they must support it. I wasn't going to because I am sick to death of dealing with Digital River (and hey, at least I won't have to after this year), but Damian and changing up my display really changed my mine.

Right now, you are acting like a 10 year old spoiled brat who didn't get his way, stomping up and down in a store because daddy told you you can't have that toy. No offense, but that is how I am reading your posts when you say you want the Marvel Legends line to end because the DC one is.

BTW, I love DCU, but Figuarts are the best action figures on the market.

Oh, and for the record, we owe Mattel NOTHING!! They should be thanking us for them still being in business to begin with in this economy. Businesses don't deserve to survive if they aren't doing what their consumers tell them, NOT the other way around. We are the customers, our money dictates their actions, thus, if they want our money, they do what we want.

There is a reason Best Buy is hurting for business. In 2010 they went from a "Get the customer what he wants and build his loyalty" plan (which had been there before I started working for them in 2006) to "gouge every cent you can from the customer and get him a BB credit card" one.

Guess what road Mattel is currently traveling down!

CMIII 08-20-2013 09:53 PM

well it wont matter if Mattel doesn't produce nobody else is getting my business. I'll hurt the others the best way not spending my money on their stuff.

We do kinda owe Mattel a thanks they did a great line for years the lack of support comes from the consumer if the consumer doesn't support then the line ends

Uh, why drag Hasbro into this? It's not their fault that DCUC/CIE is ending. It sucks about CIE, but ML went through a similar death/rebirth (without the subscription life-support bit). And ROML seems to be doing fine, relatively speaking.

That's an overly simplistic approach to economics, especially with regard to the toy and comic book industries (we are a fickle, whiny, bratty, unreasonable and demanding lot). If every company followed every whim and/or demand of their customers, they would all go out of business.

I'm not saying that companies are free to completely ignore their customer base, but some fan ideas are just not practical or feasible due to various factors.

bmorr 08-21-2013 07:44 AM

Guys, come on, don't get mad about this. The subscription plan is an absolute joke anyhow. The fact that you have to pay them to even make the toys is absolutely ridiculous. Now, i'm coming from this from an outsiders perspective, as I don't collect DC OR MOTUC, and have zero emotional investment towards either lines. Am I angry that MU is essentially ending, even though i've sunk hundreds of dollars into my collection? NO. Im happy with the collection i've got. The fact of the matter is, the toy companies are not going to bend over backwards for us, so don't put your faith and trust in them.

RKillian 08-21-2013 10:45 AM

Screw Mattel and bending over backwards to appease their subscription mentality. If I'm going to pay above and beyond for a toy, I'm going to contract a factory in China to make exactly what I want.

Boy Blunder 08-21-2013 10:45 AM

It's too bad, really; I didn't care one way or the other on Doomsday, but Hookhand Aquaman was one I really wanted (was a fan of Morrison's JLA run), and both me and my wife are big Superboy fans, especially during his 'Conner' period. As one of the late adopters for the 2013 CIE sub, I've had absolutely no complaints about it, and only one of the figures went on eBay (Freddie Freeman) for what I paid for it. The rest have all found a home in our collection.

I suppose, on the plus side, I can save money and use it to fill in the holes in our collection (Black Canary, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, etc), and hopefully we'll get more info on a possible future release for these.

On a different note, I know the current DC/Batman lines on the shelves have gone through a lot of figure cancellations... I recall hearing that Batman Beyond/Terry McGinnis was going to be one of the releases, but I heard nothing about him after that (until that more animated-styled line was announced at SDCC). Did I just dream that up, or was he cancelled to much less fanfare than Damian Wayne?

RKillian 08-21-2013 10:48 AM

They cancelled the Batman Beyond reissue months and months ago in favor of that weird Beware the Batman version of Batman. Incidentally, I read somewhere that Batman Unlimited was over too. Turns out that having 5/7 of a poorly-distributed $20 line be Batman wasn't such a hot idea either.

Boy Blunder 08-21-2013 10:51 AM

Damn. Guess I'll have to add Terry to the list of holes to fill.

CMIII 08-21-2013 11:52 AM

Hasbro doesn't deserve a penny of my money.

Again I've now said this several times the Retail route really doesn't work you can pretend that every time you walk in the store you get a figures but No!!!!!!!. I have to suffer not getting figures I wanted because Mattel, DC, and Collectors were lazy. Now my turn to be lazy Hasbro and DC Collectables wont get a penny out of me both lines could close and I would laugh at all of you. At this point lets just put the nail in the coffin of this line and walk away.

RKillian 08-21-2013 11:58 AM

I really expect so see more 3rd party offerings like we have with the TransFormers. These companies just aren't doing what many of us want them to do and I've really had enough of it.

I don't see that happening, mostly because Warner Bros. is more likely to bring the hammer down against third party groups than Hasbro.

All along the way -- during regular retail, retail exclusives, con exclusives, and subscriptions -- there's always been eBay or online vendors like BBTS as alternate suppliers, if you're willing to pay a bit more (and it seems you are).

Rattrap Primal 08-21-2013 08:46 PM

I think people where just sick of dealing with Digital River all the time or that fact that the selection was still odd (Red Hood, but using a look that people didn't really know, or not doing the fan favorites like Fire and Ice earlier (or as a 2 pack) and just too many other sub lines going for people. Counting the Matty Subs, there was MOTUC (which gets another year), the Watchmen line (not sure if that got renewed) and the DC....all three costing a pretty penny sometimes. Add that to some fans also having Transformers and GI Joe FCC figures, as well as the few who do Hot Toys and Sideshow, it was only a matter of time before some collectors started to call a break from something. Maybe Mattel shouldn't have a Sub line and go back to how it was a few years ago, or use early access as the means to fund the lines. Or maybe release the lines to retail, but with better case ratios or have some figures be store exclusives. The point is that yes the fans let the line die, but Mattel didn't help matters

Mattel may have to do this to keep the line going. Or at least get the molds they already worked on for the failed 2014 Subs out somehow, either in the form of TRU/ Walmart exclusives or like they said at non club prices on Matty Collector

I though wrestling fans where bad.

Hasbro, Mattel, Playmates exec: Oh no! We're not getting money from one guy out of over a million! We're doomed! We're closing shop over it!

Do you know how crazy that sounds? I'm sure for every Die Hard collector that boycotts a line or company there would be 10 more buying from them. Level heads and lets not flame war this like so many other supposed debacles. Maybe, just maybe, Mattel will decide to just release some of the old DCUC style figures along with the All Stars lines or in the All Star lines. Let's be rational about this here

Don't blame the company that makes the figures or decide the case ratios. The reason you don't find figures in retail is the scalpers who swoop in, buy most of the new stuff, and swoop out before normal collectors even know a new shipment came in

and yes, I think Mattel again screwed up a good thing, but being this mad is not going to help, maybe use a level headed response, like emailing Mattel asking, nicely, what their plans are and if we'll get some sort of plan B

Wrestling fans have no right to bitch about anything. They have two isles of toys at my TRU. TWO GOD DAMNED FRIGGIN ISLES!!!! Not two rows. Not two sections. TWO FUCKING ISLES!!!!!

RKillian 08-22-2013 12:39 AM

Yeah, I don't get the abundance of wrestling toys. WWE lines seem have the same half dozen or so wrestlers over and over and over.

I understand where CMIII is coming from. I don't even shop for toys at retail anymore because it's such a complete waste of time. I hate the scalpers who clean out the stores and set up shop at the flea market with a 75% markup too so I don't buy from them either.

From an outsider's perspective, the same could be said for Marvel and DC toys.

Lol, when has that ever stopped anyone?

And I believe you mean "aisle", not "isle", right? Big difference between the two. ;)

Rattrap Primal 08-22-2013 07:48 AM

I was referring to the IWC

CMIII 08-22-2013 09:30 AM

I want to apologize to every one, while I still feel the collectors bare a share of the blame, noone here should be singled out.

Many of you have complained that Mattel rose the cost and thats why you did not buy in, but it might not be as simple as that. The DC products were licensed and leased to Mattel. We do not know what happens behind the scenes DC could have raised the fee on character use this could be as little as .01 or as much as 1,000,000.00. On top of that both DC and Marvel have been fighting long running legal fights for the Seigel and Schuster character and Kirby characters (Superman Universe and Marvels full line up) and also paying for estate privilages for characters 80 or more years old again costly. Also in recent years CEO's have been made into Lex Luthor style bad guys because they worked hard to get some where. In truth I see Hasbro and Mattel stuck in a No win, Raise prices upset fans, Don't raise lose money, or Make money and get treated like the enemy

Marvel and DC don't get two isles dedicated to themselves. Hell, they barely even get a full isle for the duo combined. My store has DC, Marvel, and Star Wars all down the same isle. Turn around and there is the first isle of wrestling crap.

BTW, CM, CEOs ARE Luthor styled bad guys. Until they start paying their employees more, start helping the economy, those in need, instead of buying the latest sports car you couldn't afford in 10 years, they start helping to get teachers to be paid more than $35K a year, etc, they will always be bad guys in my eyes.

CMIII 08-22-2013 10:05 AM

So in other words if I work hard from the bottom to the top I have to hand out to people who feel entitled. Thats not the way it should there an old saying "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a life time."
The company I work for I am at the bottom of the Totem pole I don't resent our CEO he's the reason I have a job I hope some day I can acheive his level but I probably wont but that doesn't make me work any less hard for my Meager $11 dollars an hour with no OT

I wasn't referring to the amount of space allotted to each IP, I was referring to the number of toys made for specific "characters". For someone who doesn't follow comics (or specifically DC and/or Marvel publications), the comic aisle would all blend together the same as the wrestling aisle does for non-wrestling fans.

Personal opinions aside, that debate is best left to another thread.

CMIII 08-22-2013 11:40 AM

what I find funny is MOTU fans on Facebook are being sever jerks. I practically told one guy to Jam He-man in a place that wont fit. Next year the MOTU sub wont be worth it, they think a 30 year old line that hasn't been on store shelves since Regan was president (emphsis not politically meant) will survive. And Mattel expects people to settle for Fop when they want Dapper Dan (Oh Brother Where Art Thou! referance if you've never seen it you'll not get it) in my book thats a Bait and Switch. Why would they even think I want He-Man figures when my whole collection is DCU? Are they really that stupid? Why would any one want to start from scratch when it'll cost thousands just to catch up?
