Even their “we just Googled her” excuse is BS when you realize that on Googling her, two things are apparent: her skin is clearly brown, and her name is Karima Shapandar, which is pretty obviously Indian. They weren’t even trying.

Definitely not trying to make excuses for the Hasbro team as they absolutely could/should have done more thorough research or even just a reasonable double check with multiple sources ( or heck even just an assumption based on her name), but I'm not convinced a quick google image search would have been enough to correctly identify Karima's original skin tone (thus why they should have done more research). I actually think that the problem lies with Marvel and the company's very poor record of whitewashing characters in their art (especially over time) and movies. A quick google image search for me brought up more than a few imagines that show a significantly lighter skinned Karima then her original appearances. If you look at the art in Excalibur (the one where Xavier and Magneto are on Genosha) Karima is noticeably darker then anyone else and unmistakably Indian. Just a few series later in Messiah Complex, artists (look at Humberto Ramos's issues, she looks like all the other white characters) are coloring her so much lighter that when comparing the two looks they could almost seem like two completely different characters. Omega Sentinel is hardly the only character this happens to at Marvel. Monet, Scarlet Witch, and Sunspot are just three that come immediately to mind who all are constantly having their skin tones shifted, often to lighter than originally portrayed/intended. Which isn't to say there aren't a whole variety of skin tones amongst Indians, the Roma, Muslims or South Americans but it is disconcerting that these characters are almost always portrayed on (or worse changed to) the light end of that spectrum. Depending on what reference image Hasbro used I can easily see how they got it so wrong.

Ooof, that head sculpt is unfortunate. I see why they’re not talking about this wave too much. This is like cutting one under the covers and trying to contain it from your wife. She’s not going to be happy when it’s released.

I'm not going to beat a dead horse anymore than is necessary, but more research on Hasbro's part would be appreciated, or simply investing in personal friendships with long term comic readers to bounce things off of could also be a start. Beyond the Hasbro team making human mistakes like other humans are wont to do, I agree that the root of this problem is more so Marvel itself and their struggles to be more inclusive in a way that is actually meaningful and not borne of convenience and superficiality. Without dredging up popular hotbutton issues, the way to avoid these gaffes and pitfalls IMO is for publishers like Marvel to diversify their creative teams. They should make an effort to be more inclusive in their hiring patterns in everything from artists, to writers, to colorists, editors, etc. With an internal framework that's more representational of the readership mosaic they aiming to reach, I believe there would be greater consistency regarding characters like Roberto and fewer instances of sometimes jarring and clumsy attempts at forced (and too often) short term solutions/changes. Of course there has to be commitment to genuinely attracting and retaining a diversified staff along with sincere and sustained support for whatever ideas they bring to life. However, at 80+ years of age, change does not come easily. Especially in a publishing industry that is going the way of the dodo and with a population that reads less each year.

I can't lie. I still want that Mr. Hyde even though I agree with everyone's sentiments. But at least it seems like hardly anyone is too enthused with the BAF or the wave meaning I can probably get him on the cheap. By the way, maybe it might work for some of you customizers out there to see if you can splice the hairpiece from the Sasquatch BAF onto Mr. Hyde's head to give him his mop top.

By the way Ursa Major is freakin awesome. Though I don't know how that 22.99 increase on legends is going to affect my future spending habits. I know that's not much but that small difference actually might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. At best I'm going to definitely become incredibly selective with the figures. I'm either going to have to start buying BAFs complete because I might no longer be able to afford completing the wave. Depending on how badly I want him, I might not even get the chance to experience having Ursa Major.

Honestly to just flat out admit they grabbed the first pic off google is the most egregious part for me, they could've said anything else, like they were given the wrong control art or something.

Wow. I feel super bad, but I didn't realize the error on the Omega Sentinel's skin tone until you guys started talking about it. That's pretty messed up. I wonder if there will be a rerelease of some kind with the correct skin tone?
Also, looking at the Hyde, I still like the character but that head is...not my favorite. I'll still try to grab him, but in a wave where I don't want a single character, he might get lost in the shuffle.

I actually appreciate that Hasbro gave such an honest answer. Surprised, yes. Think it was a weird PR move, yes. Disappointed in the answer and them, definitely. I hope they use this as a learning opportunity and change how they approach researching and portraying authentic skin tones. I'd appreciate it even more if they worked to a solution for the Karima issue specifically too. A re-colored head as a future pack in somewhere could work for me (not a free solution but would maybe be the only feasible way for Hasbro to give us a fix)

Their decision to go with the least asked for version of Hyde baffles the mind & it cost them getting my $$ as I would have purchased the entire wave had it been the classic version that the majority of us were asking for, I would've just sold off the rest of the wave & kept Hyde. The idea of a Hasbro pulse "additional alternate heads/hands/accessories" pack would be awesome as that would be a great way to get alternate closed mouth stoic versions of 80th anniv Hulk, Beast, Wolvy Creed, Thunderstrike, & open yelling versions of other characters that have a closed mouth stoic head sculpt such as Cap, Vision, Thor, Sasquatch, etc.

The people who work at Hasbro were not hired to be fans. They don't get to sit around all day reading comic books or watching movies and cartoons. Their job is to take a piece of 2 dimensional artwork and turn it into a 6" action figure that people want to buy. Maybe that artwork comes from Marvel or they have to find it on their own. Maybe the artwork is from a page in a comic book, a piece of concept art for a movie, or a still image from the actual movie. Regardless of the source, it all boils down to Hasbro trying to make toys that will sell. Not corporate fandom. I don't know why Hasbro made an Omega Sentinel figure. Maybe they thought she looked cool or maybe Marvel wanted her in the wave. Regardless, their intention was clearly to create this version of the character:

I think they succeeded in making a figure based on the above image. Sure, a couple of extra paint apps wouldn't hurt but, overall, I think they got it. As for the extra head, maybe Marvel wanted to include it or perhaps the Legends team wanted to add something extra. I don't know. But if you look at images on Google, Omega Sentinel doesn't have a consistent look. To be honest, I thought the heads were of two different women who were Omega Sentinels, not the same person. Regardless, it looks like they chose this image to base the alternate head on.

Like Veronica Mars said, who knows what came up in their Google Image search when they designed the alternate head. But like I said above, their job isn't to read up on the character and know her back story. It's to create an action figure based on 2D artwork. Marvel clearly felt the same way because they approved the figure's design.

The makers of the replica Deloreans don't need to know every detail of John Delorean's backstory and the story behind the cars, but you can be damn sure people would be pissed if they came off the line hot pink and with standard doors. Every job involves legwork, and your excuse is just alleviating them of any responsibility

I'm glad you posted these pictures because it shows straight up how the Hasbro team neglected to color her correctly. The image of her in the mask clearly shows both significantly darker hair and noticeably darker skin. If this was the image they used as reference, they used it poorly.

The shitty thing about Hasbro is the fact that they didn’t make up a lie means they really don’t care about our feelings. Even an obvious lie would have been preferable to the truth. Fucking monsters. Let’s cancel culture Hasbro after I complete all the teams and costumes I want.

Although admittedly, as I don’t know the character, part of me finds the microcosmic irony of what is ostensibly an unplanned but still surely indefensible “fuck you” to fans on Hasbro’s part to be kind of hilariously illustrative of how woke and dedicated to diversity corporate America really is. How in the actual fuck did no one responsible for the concept, execution, packaging, presentation, approval of the end product not actually read the comics that the entire wave was based on and catch this. It's quite possible that we'll have to wait until after the series finale as some new costumes might not be properly revealed until then. Now they could still drag things out further and make us wait until the Loki series is actually out to reveal his figure which would then be the complete wave (assuming the leaks are totally accurate).
