What the hell? It’s an Amazon boxset...? So, if that’s the “Jungle Two” listing... then Excalibur is almost certainly an SDCC set.

Quick thoughts:
- Assuming my dedication is correct: why in the hell is Excalibur an SDCC set? That’s four recognizable characters with high demand for all of them. That set would do well at retail, certainly better than whatever the hell this is.
- Why the hell is this an Amazon set? What a bizarre group of characters. And having to get all of them to get the couple you want... hard pass. I wanted Callisto, but not enough to buy four figures I have no use for.
- Boy is this going to go on discount.
- And once again, what the hell?

Bo Ttef 06-04-2021 10:27 AM

yup- looks like I'm getting that stupid OmegaRed repaint after all... lol

Ultra Seven 06-04-2021 10:30 AM

My real question is: why Callisto & Wyngarde? Was it just that they were the two easiest figures to slap together...? They have minimal association with Wolverine, and I don’t recall any distinctive interactions between them. Wouldn’t Sabertooth or more Reavers have made more sense...?

Edit: in advance, would anyone care to sell me Callisto?

Starlord67 06-04-2021 10:32 AM

WTH? I'm FLOORED this is a box Set!!

Shinzero02 06-04-2021 10:35 AM

Wow...
If that was Marrow instead of Callisto, I'd be all over it. Particularly her Marvel vs Capcom incarnation considering the Omega Red uses those colors.

I kinda attribute Callisto as more of a Storm rival than a Wolverine one.

TheBlueMarvel 06-04-2021 10:41 AM

Yukio rather than Calisto might have made more sense in the set...

Captain Nash 06-04-2021 10:44 AM

A box set? Seriously bad thinking, its a pass at $120. Callisto was the only one on my wishlist, but single carded I’d have gotten both her and Wyngard. Definitely waiting for a $60 discount and if it doesn’t happen, those two are the most likely candidates for rerelease in 5-10 years. UGH WTF hasbro.

tierneygreen 06-04-2021 10:51 AM

Meh. I find it hard to stomach paying $115 for the two figures I want. Oh, and I don't care that they are the same dude, I'll be glad if I never see the Mastermind head on the Wyngarde body again.

To me at least, this is one of the most baffling & frustrating releases I have seen in the line. It’s a bizarre idea poorly executed. There’s no way this sells well between the high price point and the lack of strong demand for any one figure. It’s three C-listers that were met primarily with ambivalence, a repaint few were clamoring for, and the twentieth or so release of Wolverine. I’ll pass even on clearance out of spite.

Really irked at the prospect of an SDCC-exclusive Excalibur, those are some really essential characters for me, and I’d be deeply disappointed to not be able to get ahold of them.

I know I’ve already said it, but it is truly strange to me to offer them as an SDCC set. There’s certainly more demand for them than anything in this set (or arguably anything else they’ve offered this year, but that’s debatable).

sh002 06-04-2021 10:53 AM

Ordered. If it ever goes on sale then I'll just reorder and cancel the original order. It would have been nice if they were on Retro cards.

Well son of a bitch! Guess I'm getting a new Wolverine, Cyber, and Omega Red after all.

warmachine6 06-04-2021 10:57 AM

These figures would have peg warmed if sold seperatley or gone on sale, but i think this is a "buy on sale set", if i bother getting it which seems unlikely.
If they're going to do character themed sets "wolverine", I placing money now that the next one will be deadpool, inculded with Siryn to annoy the hell outta me.

Veronica Mars 06-04-2021 10:58 AM

At least it means minimum hunting? So if Excalibur is going to be the SDCC set I really hope it's handled like the Hellfire Club set was last year

Usually when you preorder on Amazon, if the price drops before the release they lock in the cheapest price for you

tierneygreen 06-04-2021 10:58 AM

It's funny. In that photo Wolvie looks like he's used Nair (or Nad's) on his knuckles and the top half of his pecs.

I'll second that.

Mimicboy 06-04-2021 11:02 AM

I am sooo incredibly disappointed in this group of figures being a box set.

I really want a Callisto and a Mastermind of some variety (prefer his Brotherhood look) but I could only ever afford to own them if they were single releases or perhaps in a two pack. I can't see myself paying after market price on them either. It was a lot for me to get the Hellfire and Nimrod packs last year but at least both packs included all characters I wanted and did not have (which was lucky really). Maybe one day they will re-release Mastermind in his Brotherhood look and redo his Hellfire Club look in his classic lilac and lavender colors.

Veronica Mars 06-04-2021 11:06 AM

Has anybody gotten the Disney+ wave Loki? Is it the standard suit body? If so it could be used as a stand in for the non Hellfire Mastermind

Yes, I have it. Standard for the most part, with the exception of a modern jacket and slight differences in the tie. With your kitbashing skills, I could see you making exceptional use of it.

hasbroherofan 06-04-2021 11:38 AM

Like others I'm really only interested in Callisto and Mastermind. So hopefully they're reasonable to find on Ebay.

Very debatable.

If Excalibur is an SDCC release then that's a surprise but not wholly unexpected. It's not as though they only ever release obscure characters or figures as SDCC releases; Emma Frost is a pretty big deal character (B-list at least) and the other box set last year was frickin' Wolverine and Professor X.

Thanks, I appreciate the vote of confidence, right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to do the capelet and not lose too much movement in the upper arms.

Should we be expecting a Monday reveal?

What if Tigra was the first tease for a West Coast Avengers box set?

I’d argue that as an in-general, SDCC sets tend to be slightly more niche than Excalibur, but ymmv. I tend to think that the more unifying idea behind them is generally characters/ looks that aren’t essential or heavily demanded (with Emma Frost being the most obvious exception off the top of my head). Did Hasbro ever clarify that the reason Emma was offered as an SDCC figure was because of the provocative nature of her costume, or was that just widely accepted conjecture?

Widely accepted conjecture.

I'm hoping that baf AoA Colossus's are bigger and shiny enough to replace the tiny hands on two pack Colossus

You are quite welcome, but my statement was more of a genuine observation on demonstrated skills than a confidence booster. I can't recall a kitbash you've done that was anything short of very impressive. That Sage you made was so cool it made me mad that it's taken so long to get her...

Hey, quick heads up, I was looking at the Zemo that I nabbed along with Loki and his long coat might work too. Check it out when you can, it's more stylish and could potentially match their antiquated look..

Even that's not a hard and fast rule, though. As I said, the other box set was a figure of Wolverine and Professor X from a very popular and heavily acclaimed film, so not what I'd call niche. And we also had the Uncanny X-Force box set with big guns like Wolverine, Psylocke and Archangel, as well as the Thor and Defenders sets from a a little while back (though several of those saw subsequent retail release). So Excalibur is about in line with that, depending on who is in the set. Depending on whether or not a rereleased Nightcrawler and Colossus are in there, you'd essentially have Shadowcat as the biggest name of the group.

Black Arbor 06-04-2021 12:09 PM

I wonder if Hasbro ever reveals something like this box set and then comes on the forums to see everyone hating it and thinks "... Welp, that didn't go as planned..."

Two-pack Old Man Logan's jacket looks like the best fit for a classic Mastermind. You'd have to cut an inch or two off the bottom, but otherwise it's pretty close. I think the new Mastermind head, a trimmed Old Man Logan jacket, and the D+ Loki body would probably make an exceptional OG Mastermind.
