If the Doom Patrol was a knock off of any team, it was probably the Fantastic Four.

I thought fantastic four were a rip off of the challengers of the unknown.

Black Arbor 05-29-2014 10:22 PM

Once again, not gonna get into the "who came first" thing, main point of it is, I'm lovin' Mallah and the Brain, and can't wait to cobble together MY preferred interpretation of the Doom Patrol. :D

Yes, because Mattel only has one budget to cover all their licenses and IPs.

Just because DC and MOTU are sold through the same website doesn't mean they share the same funding. You wouldn't blame a new G1-inspired Transformers toy for a Marvel toy being scrapped, would you?

IMO, that's not enough time for Lee to have plagiarized Drake's idea without knowing about Doom Patrol well in advance of My Greatest Adventure #80 (their debut issue, for those unaware).

Just going by the original DP, I'd totally agree. That version is much closer to the FF than the original X-Men.

Only if you think Kirby ripped himself off. He created both groups, just for different publishers - and yes, Challengers came first.

First doesn't always mean better, though. ;)

CMIII 05-30-2014 12:34 PM

Where was everyone who wanted Doomsday unleashed when the Club was open? I just realized we are a few weeks from MOTUC club opening for 2015.

I don't know how Mattel works, but is it that off to think that pushing out one toy (baby skeletor) may have directly or indirectly taken away resources for another (Doomsday)? You are probably right, but I would love to see that Doomsday but I will not lose any sleep over it.

As for fantastic 4 and challengers, rip off was a bad term for me to use. I just always thought F4 were Marvel's version/answer to the Challengers of the unknown. I agree, first doesn't always mean better. Unless of course you are Ricky Bobby, "If you're not first, you're last."

CMIII 05-30-2014 04:19 PM

None of us work at Mattel and they don't really work in straight forward answers. As it is any money currently made of DCUC stuff is going into Items most of us will not be buying. I'll be damned if I am going to buy a MOTU sub or a Total Heroes Item when I want to see both fail. The MOTU items are not a Licensed Item for Mattel it's their thing they own it 110% it's about the only thing they have left. WWE signed with them I keep waiting to her a Club Squared Circle once that Happens to borrow from Vince McMahone "There no chance in Hell" that would work in their favor

You obviously don't understand sarcasm, do you?

CMIII 05-30-2014 06:02 PM

While it was sarcastic it's possible the money is going into MOTU stuff none of us know for certain. We all know the Brand Manager is all about MOTU and always has been

Yes it is that far off. Mattel, just like other multi-brand companies and conglomerates, has separate divisions covering each of their brands. Those divisions are comprised of their own staffing and budgets. It is possible to reduce the budget for one division while increasing the budget of a different one, but companies don't do something like that just so a certain brand manager can stroke his ego.

In short: no one "lost" the chance to get Doomsday Unleashed because MOTUC decided to make Baby Skeletor.

Yep, that's why I totally didn't use our Sarcasm smiley in the post that you just quoted.

Facetiousness aside, the second half of my post was more for the benefit of those who thought you were being serious. Hell, in your follow-up comment to Kernel, you said you wished you were joking. That, to me at least, tells me your original comment wasn't entirely meant as sarcasm.

I hate to say it guys, but the whole Doomsday Debacle (pat. pend.) could've been a lot worse. Anyone Remember this?

http://i59.tinypic.com/122hiy1.jpg

Mow, imagine you have to stand in line at SDCC 2014, get a raffle ticket to *possibly* get a Doomsday, and when you did, you couldn't see what was inside, so you might get Unleashed Doomsday, or you might get Gimp Suit S/M Doomsday. That'd make for some fun forum discussions...

No, I don't remember those at all. In fact, I've never seen those versions of Batman before.

Well basically, Mattel did an Unmasked Batman figure for SDCC that, while a decent idea in theory, they managed to bungle in the way only Mattel could. They put out three versions, one unmasked, one unmasked with a paint wash and battle damage, and one in the process of removing his mask, aka this ass-tastic hunk of plastic:

http://i58.tinypic.com/bdps8y.jpg

Also, not only were there three different versions, you had to get a ticket to have even a chance of getting one, and you didn't know which one you got 'til you opened it, 'cause it was sold in one of those white mailer boxes the DCSC and MOTUC figures come in. Essentially, Mattel fudged up an easy Comic-Con exclusive BIG-time.

CMIII 06-02-2014 05:28 PM

there are bigger problems at conns then that

Well, considering this is the "DC Universe Classics 6" Appreciation Thread" and not the "Neckbeards who reek of 3 day BO" or the "$10.00 for a pretzel and soda" thread, I'd say this is a good place to vent on Mattel for any past/present/future idiocy.

Wow, that just sounds so stupid. Why would they even...

nevermind...

it's Mattel.

So did the one with the mask half off at least come with an alternate head to switch with? I mean, it would be pretty stupid to have a figure like that on display because you cannot do anything with him other than pretend he is Batman's retarded cousin BatDeDeDe.

Nope, he was stuck with that head. His arms were also made at a 90 degree angle with no elbow hinge, and he had his hands in a weird pinchy pose so you could put his thumbs under the mask. So, yeah, any other pose besides "in the process of unmasking" makes him look like an idiot. Classic Mattel...

sounds like a quick custom app is needed for him. extra head and some revoltech joints to make removable hands.. and you might be able to fix that mistake of Mattels

You act like everyone is able to do customs though.

no just making a suggestion...I am learning to do customs so I know not everyone is able to...just a thought since it seems this Bat's is useless as a working action figure.

The owners of said figure may or may not think my suggestion is a good idea

funny pics u got there...I like it :)

I was talking about the DCUC stuff having bigger problems at conn's. EG letting people buy 25 of one exclusive figure then they go onto Ebay and Amazon and charge 10X the Conn Price

trebleshot 06-04-2014 06:04 AM

But DCUC wasn't the only one with that problem. Personally, I think the reason toy makers didn't put limits on the quantity is because they were worried about having leftover stock that wouldn't sell. I honestly don't think they took the secondary market into consideration or the idea that people might resell them after the event. Maybe the people working the booth thought of it when someone came through their line and bought 25 of the same exact figure and forwarded it on to TPTB.

I know Hasbro has said in the past that they do not pay any attention to the secondary market when it comes to planning future products. I don't know if that's still true or if Mattel is the same way or not. But at least we are seeing them put quantity limits on SDCC exclusives now (and by "them", I mean toy companies in general).

CMIII 06-04-2014 09:03 AM

I think it was the Gleek issue that brought it to a head.. They ran head first into a brick wall

collectvintage 06-04-2014 12:36 PM

picked up the batman unlimited deathstroke MOC, looks fantastic
