For example, I have the Greg Capullo style Riddler in my DCUC cabinet, but Nygma's always been a tall guy to me, so it doesn't really stand out too bad. Then there's the deluxe sized figures, like the Arkham Grundy, Titan Joker, Clayface and Killer Croc, and the Infinite Crisis Mongul, that are supposed to be gigantic guys. Heck, with some futzing (or maybe a flying pose if it's a flying character) you could probably put any DCC figure in your DCUC! the only nit I have is the varying artistic styles, but that's just one'a those things... :D

I hear you man. I used to collect DC direct, in particular that run that they modeled on the late Michael Turner's art. I had Black Lightning, Elongated Man, Vixen (boy do I wish Mattel had gotten around to Vixen), and Hawkgirl (also a nice sculpt). I'm pretty anal though (if you haven't noticed from my posts...:o) and it irked me that they were so statuesque next to Legends like Kang, Wonderman, and Captain Britain. I ended up selling them all and starting my DCUC collection in earnest. Additionally, I tend to agree with Dr. Kain (not on DCUC sculpts vs DCC) in that I dig old costumes. The New 52 is a big turn-off for me.

Y'know, those Michael Turner figures... not really my cup o' tea (no offense to the late Mr. Turner) but I did snag an Elongated Man to paint into his classic purple and white suit, and popped a Young Justice Red Arrow head on him to complete the look. :)(side note: DC should've really planned out EM better. I mean, with him and Plastic Man, that's two stretchy heroes with red and yellow costumes. Talk about redundant... :D) But yeah, I agree with you and Kain, 'cause the Nu52 doesn't really do anythin' for me design-wise. I mean, that Owlman figure makes him look like an idiot! it's almost as bad as his original look with the pirate boots and knockoff Hawkman mask!

Dr Kain 07-19-2014 09:49 PM

You know what would be awesome? I know this will never happen, but DC would gain a lot of my support back if they were to say, "Hey, those of you that collected the Mattel toylines, we got some great news. While they won't be by the Four Horsemen, we are going to start releasing figures in the 6inch scale that will match up with your DCU figures and start filling in the gaps on your teams. You seem to be missing some of the New Teen Titans? Well we got you covered. You want a Joker, Kelly, and Superman to go with that Dark Knight Returns Batman? You got it. Brand new fully posseable versions are coming out."

305Batman 07-19-2014 11:49 PM

Hell Dr. Kain,I'd settle for a 6 inch Keaton!

However, I disagree with them being better than the Classics line. The eyes on those Earth 2 figures look terrible. WW and Luthor look bug eyed. At least their quality of plastic seems to be improving.

They have gotten aaaa lllooootttt better. QC when it comes to paint apps seems to be an issue still [and price due to only comic shops carrying them]. However, I love the N52 stuff and love having my figures and teams up to date, so that's an auto win for me.

I'd be down for that. as long as the sculpts weren't SUPER stylized. I can't wait 'til SDCC though. I bet either DCC or Mattel (Most likely DCC) is gonna have some good news for us!

I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment then. I don't see either company giving two shits about us enough to care.

Yeah, some of the Michael Turner figs were unimpressive. That Batman/Superman evil Supergirl was pretty fugly and even that Darkseid was weird(?)... Michael Turner didn't sculpt the figures, so its not his fault that some came out wonky. His art was sometimes hit or miss, which was something he did control (I wasn't super into his art - no disrespect to the dead).

Cool idea with the Elongated Man. You are right, Mattel could have done a better job with him. However, my thinking is more along the lines of limb attachments rather than paint. Although I prefer his purple (really mauve! gotta respect a hero with the stones to rock mauve lol!) and white costume, I understand their decision to sport the dark blue/red/yellow. Elongated Man is not exactly a name-brand hero. Most of us that were (are) JLA fans know the ancillary team members from the 80/90's. Some of us who are big Flash fans also had some experience with Mr. Dibny. Unfortunately, for many, their first experience with Ralph may have been word of mouth suggestions referencing the "Identity Crisis" series. The story might have made E.M.'s modern costume more iconic given power of the story and its general celebration by fans as an epic storyline. Back to your custom making...I envy you guys that will just whip up your own version of gaps in collections. I just don't have the time or space, maybe one day. I saw a crazy custom of purple and white E.M. years ago on eBay using that Hasbro Mr. Fantastic body (Ronan). I don't remember where the head came from (it was a pretty good Dibny likeness), but the paint job looked better than most factory apps. To sweeten the pot, whomever made it had a non-stretched (also sporting a flawless paint) version to make a complimentary set. I nearly bought it, but I was ultimately priced out.

I would cosign on this idea. The gap-fillers I want are:

Some Titans:
Troia (nice to see a Darkstars along with a star-scape oufit)
Terra
Wonder Girl (cassie)
Jericho

Some Outsiders:
Katana
Halo
Geo-Force
Arsenal
Jade
Thunder
Grace
Indigo
Dr. Light (Kimiyo)

Some Suicide Squad:
Vixen
Enchantress
Blockbuster
Killer Frost
Count Vertigo
Dr. Light (Arthur)
Manchester Black

The issue with Elongated Man was did Mattel lose the molds for the accessories?

From what I understand, Elongated Man doesn't stretch his body into crazy shapes like Plastic Man does, he just, y'know, elongates himself, so other than the neck piece and bendy arms Plas came with, the other stuff wouldn't fit with Dibny. And now for the retorts with evidence to render my comment null and void. :D

Have you heard tale of Mattel losing molds? I'm not challenging your assertion. I'm genuinely curious. I see all of these DCUC prototypes on eBay. Endless iterations of various figs. Your comment makes me wonder where they get them from....

'Cause it's the Internet, and there's always gonna be that one guy who pulls up a panel from a super-obscure comic just to prove ya wrong. :D I also ordered a DC Unlimited New52 Batman off ebay recently, but, lo and behold, he's got two left lower legs. Le sigh. Looks like I'll stick with my DC Direct Classic Icons Bats for now...

Hahaha! Gotta love the intertubes...information abounds! As close as the tips of your fingers! It makes idiots into....uhhh, bigger idiots!?!?

That sucks about New 52 Bats. A lesser known Mattel DCU Bats that I like is that Batman that came out of the short lived Young Justice line. It actually looks like it could stand in for the modern bats. If you are lucky enough to get a good paint, its pretty cool (definitely the best fig of the line - but that aiin't sayin' much). I picked up one and a YG Aqualad and they both come with dioramas, but Batman's is more serviceable....

Yeah, that YJ Batman is awesome, but I'd have to either get one loose with no cool extras from China (which I don't like doin', though I will admit to having done it once or twice) or shelling out big bucks to some scalper for it, which ain't my preferred option either. Man, why couldn't the show have lasted longer? then we could've gotten that Bats in a lot of stores, and get that cool Guardian they showed off!

actually the Neck Extender and Strechy would have been all I wanted

Im sure Mattel throw them out.. Or uses them to create a Figure that pays tribute to a production mistake. Look where most of those Prototypes come from on Ebay. I'd bet someone does the five finger discount then posts them on Ebay

Funny you should mention that Guardian. I tried to win an eBay auction for the prototype roughly a year or so ago. I wasn't willing to pay $60 and someone else scooped it up. The seller had it listed as a Sportsmaster prototype. After I had been priced out, I emailed the seller to let him know that it was not what he thought it was and it was potentially worth much more. He replied that he couldn't end the auction (not true - he could have, but I didn't say anything to him) and he asked me how I knew what I'd told him (I of course told him I was a big fan of the toon). That thing was cool man! it looked better than the other crap (Batman being the exception) that Mattel offered for YJ (just realized I used YG for Young Justice the first time..I'm an idiot lol). That's one of two prototypes that I wished I had shelled out the dough for...Hasbro's Bi-Beast was the other...

Word?!?! You think they throw them away? Well damn, they could throw them my way! I'll put them to good use! LOL

60 bucks!? I'd have gladly paid that for that Guardian! How come it seems like the coolest figures are always in a series that gets cancelled or never makes it to retail? I call shenanigans!

I know dude....I feel like a fool for not pulling the trigger.

JangonateTK421 07-21-2014 05:53 AM

I found a ton of those YG Batman's at the Roses down the road for dirt cheap. Part of me wonders if they're still there. Nothin moves there.

CMIII 07-21-2014 12:42 PM

The only DCC news that would be good would be Unleashed Doomsday. It would be the Ultimate F-You to Mattel since thre sales would be huge

Ahhh, but that would require DC to, you know, care about their audience/customers and listen to/interact with them on some level.

Asking a bit much of them, ain't it?

(But yes, this would be a grand thing. I still want my 90s Kyle Rayner and Conner Hawke for my Morrison-era Justice League. And Impulse for the original Young Justice team.)

CMIII 07-21-2014 08:15 PM

Yeah look at what communicating with us did for Mattel, Wait they didn't communicate with us and when they did it was like this "We want this." to which Mattels reply was "No you want this" then they get all confused when we say "Thats not what I wanted". I still say an Oversized DCC Doomsday would Hurt Mattel, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mattel only resigned on the condition that DCC not do one, knowing it would make them (Mattel) look stupid and prove how much of a money maker it would have been

Dr Kain 07-21-2014 09:19 PM

Unfortunately, the only "UNleashed" Doomsday we would see from DCC is a New 52 one.
