Fuck that guy!
It's as id Marvel thinks that Nova's popularity was somehow baed around the concept and not the character- that you can swap an established hero with decades of development with any new bozo and expect the sam fans to be excited.

Of course, that's exactly what they expect- just look at Spider Man, Ghost Rider, Captain America, etc. etc.
Worse still is the idiotic notion of "lets start with a fresh teen cast!"- as though any comic writer knows shit about today's youth that they did not read on Yahoo News...or worse, you'll get someone like Peter David that wants o ram a message down your throat each issue.

Blergh.

Still, as long as I have my Venom, Punisher, Daredevil and (shit Land art aside) Gillen's upcoming Iron Man book, I'll squint and read my roomate's other Marvel titles without too much complaint.
And Hickman is taking over Avengers, FTW! YEEEEAAAAAA!!!!! We'll get to see more of the new SHIELD as more than window dressing!

I think the whole idea of having a "Nova Corps." would allow for there to be more than one Nova running around, right? I mean, it's in Richard's origin story, so the idea that there can be more than one "Nova" has been there since the beginning. So, Marvel isn't just pulling it out of their collective ass on this one (except for maybe deciding to use the USM Nova as opposed to someone entirely new. I view them as the Marvel equivalent of DC's Green Lantern Corps.

And to that end, you're basically going through the same thing that Hal Jordan fans went through after Parallax. Well, except Richard didn't go psycho and kill billions of beings before sacrificing himself in a last-minute attempt at redemption.

There were other Nova Corps members, this is definitely true. Unfortunately they were no longer Nova Centurions after Richard Rider(the Nova Prime) siphoned all the nova force back into him in one last attempt to prevent Thanos from handing over 616 to the Cancerverse (evil doppleganger universe), which not only left those other Nova Corps members powerless but also left the Xandarian Worldmind (Super Computer AI that contains the entire culture, knowledge and science of the Xandarian race) offline since it was powered by the Nova Force and the connection to it was also severed once Nova and Starlord were locked in that Universe.

I guess the green Lantern reference would be like having a new green Lantern running around after not only the big battery on OA was destroyed but also that living entity inside of it that's like Paralaxx and powered Ion was also destroyed somehow.

Based on the above events, I think its fair to say that guy who tried to chastise me as an ungrateful fan because Marvel was catering to me by not bringing back rider and respecting his sacrifice had absolutely no clue what he was talking about. If that was true about Marvel, they wouldn't have already brought back Starlord and Thanos who also were trapped there.

But more disconcerting about this New Nova book we're getting is that not only was the character created by Jeph Loeb (Sam Alexander was named after his late son, Sam btw), but it will also be written by him. With the recent track record of terrible story telling at Marvel that Jeph Loeb has, this certainly doesn't lend much optimism about a new Nova Centurion.

What are the realistic chances he actually read DnA's run on the cosmic stuff and will actually build on what they created versus ignore it and do his own thing? We all know if it ain't broke...cancel it and make it match the movieverse is the new theme at marvel for both cartoons and comics these days :(

Jason Abbadon 07-30-2012 02:32 PM

Loeb...fuck's sake.
That just ruined my day, man.

I'm a Huge D&A arvel cosmic fan (see my original comic art thread) and was really hoping we'd get D&A to herald a new GotG series to hype the movie...

Now that asshat Loeb- the penis responsible for cancelling EMH- is going to cock up the Nova mythos?

Grim days ahead indeed.
You asked f he'll even bother to read the D&A stuff? I'm guessing he cant be bothered.

Kaewin 07-31-2012 08:38 PM

D&A? I haven't read much of the cosmic stuff so I am a bit behind. Old Marvel lots of knowledge, New Marvel getting back in.

D&A is short for Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Theyve been writing basically everything for cosmic marvel since Annihilation. The way I see it, what they did for cosmic marvel is parallel to what Hickman did for Fantastic Four.

The entity living inside the battery was a retcon due to Blackest Night/Brightest Day. During the original Parallax story arc (Emerald Twilight), none of that existed and the Oan Battery was just an artificial power source. And if I remember right, psycho Jordan drained it during his rampage.

The Guardians then put all their remaining power into Ganthet, thereby killing themselves and making Ganthet the sole remaining Guardian, who then found Kyle Rayner and gave him the only Power Ring left, making him the sole remaining Green Lantern. So...

Main power source offline/destroyed? Check.
All other Corps members either dead or de-powered? Check.
A newbie with little to no backstory or involvement with the Corps is now the sole member? Check.

Btw, and thanks for the summary regarding the recent events with Nova. All I've known up till now is his origin and the basics.

I'd have to agree with you. At that point, it's not catering to the fans, it's a half-assed excuse to cover up the fact that the writers fubar'd a bit of their own continuity and that this is only to get a boost from USM's version of Nova.

From a business standpoint, I completely understand the decision. But I have to say it wasn't the best way they could have handled the transition.

Maybe with Marvel's new-found desire to refocus on a single, over-arching and tightly-knit continuity will help keep Jeph from fucking around too much. Otherwise, I feel for you guys.

Hahaha, with respect to schooling me on GL history. That's what happens when your only knowledge of the mythology spans from Reborn to Brightest Day. I see your point.

I can say I enjoyed DnA's entire marvel cosmic run much more than what I admitted reading for GL. Not trying to make an argument over what franchise is superior, by any means, I like both but definitely have a marvel cosmic preference.

They (DnA) apparently are excited about the movie but either are feigning ignorance or really don't know any more about the movie than we do at this point.

i cant friggen wait for that. oh yeah, did any of you guys read the new hawkeye book. I got turned off by the art, and as history serves, a hawkeye book never really lasts long. Im still laughing at the descision to make a solo gambit book though.

Yeah, there's a thread on the Hawkeye book. I really liked it actually. The artwork really fit the tone of the story I thought. I also was already a fan of theirs from the Immortal Iron Fist run, so it was familiar territory in a good way. I can't speak to the longevity of this book because I agree with your historical reference for his solo books, however, if the story telling stays consistent with issue #1 I will continue to read it.

It can also be said that the popularity of Hawkeye has never been higher than it is currently if for no other reason than his sheer public exposure with the success of the Avengers film, despite not being among the most popular or noticeable of the team. That fact alone may carry this series farther than any of his before it, for whatever that's worth.

That's the thing though- the "new" Nova does not seem to be new to the job- but somehow has a different uniform kinda like Richard Rider's...which is assinine in the extreme since Richard's was made to help him contain the vast power of the entire Nova Corps (which this kid cant have since Thanos Imperative's events).

And of course, all the Nova Corps members were accounted for at the time of the big cutoff.

Worse still, D&A had spent a few years establishing exactly how Nova's powers worked- through manipulation of gravimetric fields (allowing for shields and power blasts, super-strength, opening of stargates, etc).
Ten bucks says all that development gets ignored completely...

bmorr 08-05-2012 06:28 AM

Im deifinitly gonna save my bucks and skip that.

Tarooster 08-05-2012 04:48 PM

So from what I can tell, atleast 4 books that I pull are going. (cap, iron man, uncanny, and fantastic four.) Also if you read the preview for the last issue in October for JIM it would seem that series is going as well, which would make 5 for me. Which is half my pull list lol.

I'm sure cap, iron man, and ff will obviously return in some capacity with new creative teams, but I'm a big fan of if it ain't broke don't fix it and brubaker and Hickman were both magnificent on the irrespective titles. Fraction was pretty good with iron man for the most part too.

I'm glad Hickman is going on the avengers books and I'm sure they'll be improved but absolutely nothing else they've announced excites me. No way would am I giving up x force or secret avengers for that uncanny avengers shit, een it is written by remender. I'm ginna have to find some new books though so I can keep my hefty discount lol.

bmorr 08-05-2012 05:36 PM

do they have a full list somewhere on the net about what books are being cancelled?

Tarooster 08-05-2012 05:47 PM

It's not really a list but you can see the solicitations for October and kinda tell what's either being cancelled or relaunched. Thor, Iron Man, and cap will all get new no.1s despite two of them just getting new 1s in 2011 lol.

Ff is being cancelled or relaunched yet again but no details have come out yet. Apparently there's gonna be a new 1 from October to February so if you do 4 weeks a month then your getting atleast 16 new 1s either from relaunches or new series.

For years now this is something that many people would cheer but the DC and Marvel don't think this is what sells comics. I really wish the X-Men would just move forward a year or two and have tons of new mutants being discovered all over the planet. House of M was such a mistake. It was basically Marvel saying that the X-Men weren't interesting enough on their own and needed to be less mutant. It was enough that they killed off most of the mutants in the planet on Genosha.

We don't need 10 X-Men books, we need 2 or 3 (only because of X-Force), 1 Spider-Man book, 1-2 Avengers books, 1 Hulk book, 1 Fantastic Four book, etc. If you want to spotlight other characters do it in one-shots or write them into main stories. Someone needs to get these guys to stop trying to put out new books every month and consolidate what talent they have. Lowers their cost to produce books and makes them more profitable. They can still put Wolverine in everything if they want.

bmorr 08-06-2012 06:22 AM

yeah its just nine titles that are being cancelled, and all of them have the most popular characters in them....

my reasoning behing the multiple x books or the multiple spidey titles is that the companies love to saturate the market with product that the loyal fanboys will eat up. ive seen plenty of guys walk in and buy every title with an x on it or an avengers logo. The big guys know this, and take advantage of this.

While I agree with you, I doubt anyone working on the new series bothered to look into why Ryder's uniform looked that way and probably just assumed that it was the default costume now. Which is not without reason, as sometimes heroes simply redesign their outfits from time to time for no apparent reason (other than for the sake of change).

Given the above bit about his costume/suit, I think you're probably right. Again, I feel for the Nova/Cosmic fans out there. I'm just too jaded to bother getting all that upset about what Marvel (or DC) does these days.

Remember, I survived the Clone Saga....

(Admittedly, we did get Ben Parker out of it, but getting there was not half the fun. It had no part in the fun at all.)

bmorr 08-06-2012 09:46 AM

i think the cosmic marvel FANS are gonna get shafted once this all starts. Granted, that whole portion of marvel is pretty thick on the backstory. you know what would help? REPRINT ANNIHILATION. that shits expensive now.

lol forgot a critical word there.

You aren't kidding. I'm glad I picked up the annihilation series before the price mark up. I honestly expect reprints of everything cosmic by DnA next year as the lead up to 2014's GotG movie draws more curiosity. I was just having a conversation recently with Jason on how expensive Nova's TPB's for vol 4 and 5 are right now because they went out of print. I ended up just getting them on digital last week during comixology's $.99 sale. What a great deal!

In other Marvel Now related news it looks like Remender will be the new writer on Cap too! Definitely excited for that.
http:// http://m.ign.com/articles/20...aptain-america

Also, I havent picked up a Hulk Comic in a long time. Hopefully this might change things:
http:// http://m.ign.com/articles/20...ke-on-the-hulk

Very excited for Gillen's Iron Man too!

yeah, i bought all 6 volumes of Nova for forty bucks two years ago at my LCS during a buy one get one free sale. but now ALL the cosmic event trades are now all wallet rapes, and now infinity gauntlet and crusade is probably gonna suffer as well.
