Two entirely different actresses Sophia Turner is not Famke Janssen. Ms. Turner did a much better job with character

Completely different studios and production teams.

Except that Fox doesn't have the rights to use Misty Knight

Trivial Psychic 07-31-2017 07:17 PM

Still can't believe that Ms. Beetz beat out Janelle Monae. Janelle was BORN to play Domino...and is also drop dead gorgeous to boot.

That said...I hate the changes to Domino, my apologies, but that afro looks awful. Janelle's pompodour would have looked WAY better if she had landed the role...

I'm sorry, but if we're going by that, Days of Future past was crap because everyone thought "one picture" of Quicksilver was hysterically bad, right?

The way how a comic book character looks does not indicate how successful a film will be. Apocalypse had a few pacing, character, and plot issues, which had absolutely nothing to do with how Apocalypse looked.

With that being said, it would be best to wait until this movie comes out to determine whether it's crap.

Janelle Monae would have been amazing. I really hope the afro is just for that picture

Riddick 07-31-2017 07:33 PM

Hate the look for Domino.

Agree with Kain about the hair. Hate it for Domino.

I want to see Ms Monae play Dazzler.

I like Domino, I just wish the white patch over her eye was a bit more brilliantly white.

Most likely this is in part a budget decision, a rated R Deadpool movie taking place on Earth is probably going to have far less money allotted for make-up and effects than something like GotG and it's need to make fake worlds look realistic and make people look like they're aliens from space.

They've since released a new shot of Domino that is a close-up portrait. It appears that, for the film, the white spot around her eye is from vitiligo, a condition that causes the loss of pigmentation in the skin. Pretty interesting take on Domino's skin mutation, and it looks pretty accurate to the complexion of real-life occurrences of vitiligo.

I can't agree with you at all. I thought Sophia was a worse Jean. All I saw was Sansa's little bitch ass telling her handmaiden she doesn't care about her throughout the entire movie. Sansa is the last worthless GoT character left alive and as such, I can't see anyone else when I look at Sophia.

Hell, I still find it odd now to see Batman giving his gadget to Goffrey. lol

Except Apocalypse did turn out to be a shit movie. Magneto is the only thing that keeps it from being as bad as X3.

It still might be, lighting in that pic could be throwing it off

I've never seen GoT so I didn't have Sophie Turner's role there to influence my perception of her

I just saw that. It's such a cool take on it, and gives positive exposure to a skin condition that gets a lot of stigma.

All of you disliking it, maybe just don't see the movie and vote with your lack of dollars. The rest of us will enjoy it because we're not so beholden to rigid translation that we're not open to reinterpretation. :p

Knowing its a deliberate stylistic choice and seeing it close up like that I have to say I'm sold. She looks great.

SymbiSpidey 08-01-2017 01:07 AM

I honestly don't mind the new Domino look. It's not like the Fox X-Men movies have a particularly great track record when it comes to the movie characters looking like their comic counterparts. I mean, Wolverine is a whole foot taller than he should be.

Again, had nothing to do with the look of the Antagonist. The film had many problems overall, and the design for Apocalypse was a the bottom of the list. Many of us enjoyed the first Deadpool, but some of the main characters looked nothing like their counterparts. Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Copycat, and Ajax don't look like they do in the comics. Like I said, for a first picture I think it's just meh, but I'm cool with the character design AND will wait until I see the movie and find out which direction they are going. Marvel/Disney, Fox, and Sony do not set these movies in the 616 universe. They are else world stories that keep the core of the main character who they are, and make sure everything comes across well on screen. Just like ANY film sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Some of you guys on here are such Turds, and you know who you are. Always have something to say about race every chance you get. Can't we just get through one thread without racist stuff being thrown around?
Yeah it is a comic, yeah it is made up, so why does it have to be exactly like the comic? If they had done that Wolverine would have yellow spandex all these years. He would have been shorter. Jackman has been playing Wolverine for the past ten years almost being way too tall and that is ok but One character must have white skin to be ok?

I love the spin on the character. I think taking it in an original direction is a great idea and I believe they did it with a great originality with the skin pigmentation idea. Honestly all it is is an inverse Domino had light skin and a dark eye. This actress has darker skin with a light eye. I love it. Since they did well on the first movie I will trust them with this one too. I think it is going to be good because of originality and effort that they put into characters like Domino.
They could have taken the easy way out and had her look exactly like the comic book character but that would be an easy out. I applaud them for effort and originality.

You are very fortunate. I hate her character so much in GoT that is all I see when I look at her.

lol What's funny is as soon as I watched GoT on BD (since that is how i watched the first season) I was like, "Hey, that looks like the kid from Batman Begins." Looked it up and it was.

I have no idea who those characters are though. I had never heard of them until the movie. I thought they were made up for ite. Ajax is a Hulk villain anyway and Negasonic came out after Age of Apocalypse (which is to me the series finale of X-Men), so I couldn't give a crap about them. Deadpool and Colossus were all that mattered and they were accurate.

No one is talking about race. We are talking about Domino having white skin. You know, as in the color white. Like the background of the text box I am typing in. Not the peachy color of skin that is what white people have.

Or maybe some of us just don't like the casting choice, costume, or that afro. I could not care less about the color of her skin. Blink has been cast as Asian in two X-Men features now, and she is Bahamian. Psylocke was of mixed ethnicity in "Apocalypse", and many of us didn't care about that either. I'm more interested in the essence of the character being represented, and outside of the spot on her eye (which is really tiny btw) it's not a good first impression.

It works both ways though...Stallone still looks and sounds more like Dredd than Karl Urban ever did, but we can all agree how much of a wreck that film was (despite being more faithful to the books in terms of look, costumes, and story elements than the remake was.)

I should also mention that once they announced that a black actress was playing Domino, nobody should have been surprised that her skin wasn't bleached. Domino is not a green space alien (like Gamora,) so to do so would have given the left so much ammunition with allegations of reverse blackface and whitewashing that the media would have had a field day with it, and it would have brought on a lot of bad publicity. Even with a character like Deadpool who prints money, you don't want bad publicity going into any project...period.

I'm tired of the Hugh Jackman analogy when comparing this, because EVERYONE was laughing, bitching, and moaning at the first images of Wolverine when the original X-Men film debuted, (just like everyone groaned when that first image of Ledger's Joker debuted.) Anyone who says they weren't, you are a liar. And honestly, the look in that first film was and still is really rough. Hugh really did not feel like Logan to many of us up until that fight in the X-Mansion against Striker's goons in X2. Of course we should always look for the performance to win us over, but first impressions me an a lot, as they can both build and kill hype for a film, and this one was really underwhelming and disappointing.

I still don't like what I see, but hopefully Ms. Beetz hits it out of the park and has us "haters" eating crow. First impressions though are just that...first impressions.

When did they announce this? This is the first time I learned Domino was going to even be in the movie. I only heard Cable was going to be in it and that Josh Brolin may be playing him (even though Stephen Lang should be Cable as Brolin is Thanos).

Ryan Reynolds tweeted it out about two months ago.

It's not about whether or not you knew who these characters are, they still existed in the comics and had certain looks before they were brought to life on the big screen. The creators of the film decided against those looks, however, you confirmed what I said earlier. Get the main characters done right at their core (Deadpool), and tell a good story which translates into a good film. I can't stress enough that we here are the minority. A big percentage of the general audience does not know who these characters are, we do because it's what we love.

We'll see what happens. Yeah, I'll most likely ignore it if the movie ends up being good. I'm really worried though from the director change to Fox seemingly take over a lot of control this time around. It feels like every time a movie is successful because there was little studio interference, the studio feels that they need to be all hands on with the sequel. This is what ruined the Alien franchise from Alien 3 onward, this is what ruined the X-Men franchise, and from what it sounds like, will ruin the Wonder Woman sequel (WB has apparentely said they aren't going to allow Patty Jenkins to have full control over the sequel like they let her with the first one).
