EMH was rather mixed. Had it's good spots and its bad.

Assembled and Rising handle her really well without any of the random weird "wait wut?" questionable stuff of randomly depowering women to make them weak at inopportune times for no reason other than induced peril or other stuff of having them get the male hero into bad spots.

Don't get me wrong though, EMH had some great new stuff and neat moments, but there is some really 'wait, that's not how that works' moments when you stop to think about it. Like absorbing man and Thor's hammer. Which was a cool af scene, but uru metal isn't what Thor controls, and Uru metal is what Absorbing man absorbed. Still funny af that the enchantments went with it though for that scene. But logistically, really shouldn't have worked like that either. But hey, cartoons are allowed some leeway to do random "Cool for coolness sake" stuff.

It was funny to watch fans do mental blackflips to make excuses for that stuff though that was intentionally put there to see how they'd react to it or if they'd question it. That Carol and debris scene was one of those.

Captain Marvel's brand awareness is at a high right now. There have been some concentrated pushes for that intentionally since her rebranding from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel. Even before that though, her general audience awareness was relatively high for various reasons, including X-Men's Rogue. So she's pretty recognizable and has been heavily pushed and prepped for her solo movie, as well as having had several well received more general audience supported comic runs.

So going into the film, general audiences as well as kids are much more aware of who she is than say the GOTG that really only had 2 cartoon appearances before their first movie.

I got the sense Carol Danvers was always well liked by Marvel fans, but Marvel never knew what to do with her. Ms. Marvel, Binary, Warbird... so glad they finally found a way to use her that clicked.

Louder for the people in the back.
If you can't muster any excitement for another entry in a cinematic universe that can safely be declared a roaring success, that's fine. But a lot of other people are excited about it, and it's perfectly okay to be happy for them. Fandom is a hell of a lot better when we share it.
If anything, they've shown that they're great at putting the best possible people in place to succeed. So, I'm excited to see it.

...gaunt-faced emo Ed Norton Hulk is better forgotten though.

I think they’ve done a pretty good job. There hasn’t been a really disappointing film in the whole series. I don’t care much for the first couple Thor movies but they were vaguely entertaining enough to make me buy more crap. So that’s how I measure the success of a film. Also none of them have been terrible like Joel Schumacker Batman that makes me hate everything for years.

redfox 12-04-2018 10:00 PM

I want to be really enthusiastic for this wave...but it's just not there. The choice in figure selection leaves a lot to be desired. Also, IMO the Brie Larson likeness is extremely lacking and doesn't match the standards of many of the recently great MCU figure releases.

Snowflakian 12-04-2018 11:40 PM

The toy line up looks promising! Hope it does well. And hope they still have one more toy surprise set aside for the home media release.

When she's handled by the right writers, she's got some amazing stories. When given to the wrong writers though, she's also got some of the most cringe stories too because of those bad writers doing some really weird crap(Avengers issue 200). A lot of those name shifts and power change ups were because of better writers cleaning up bad writer messes, and other rights issues of the time too and trying to avoid brand confusion with a DC property.

But even the rebranding took a bit to click before it finally stuck, a lot of initial pushback before it finally settled and was accepted. A lot of that drew off of some of her best stories and aspects of her past good stories though too. Which is what we see a lot of emphasis on here in the movie, which is why it's also generating so much excitement. The film directly references a lot of her recent critically acclaimed stories that had some massive general audience pulls.

I am a long time comic book nerd, and one of the first - perhaps the first - comic book I read was a team up with Spidey and Ms. Marvel (Spidey Super Stories #29). I am excited for this film. Not only are we getting Danvers but Mar-Vell, the Kree, the Skrulls, and more Fury and Ronan.

But the question I was responding to was why this film is getting so much hype and buzz when there hasn't been much revealed to warrant it. All the stuff I'm excited about means nothing to the average film goer or entertainment news outlets. A female lead gives the media an easy narrative hook to write their stories around. After similar narratives were used for Wonder Woman and Black Panther, reporters are trying to get in front of the film.

I thought the trailer was really good. I actually liked it more than the Black Panther trailer, which I thought (wrongly) gave away too much of the action pieces. It sets up a character that 90+% of movie going audience members have no clue who it is. So many people think she is Marvel's response to Wonder Woman or Supergirl. There is a LOT of confusion by the masses. She doesn't have the 30 years of mass merchandise ranging from cake toppers to underoos that Venom has had.

Just how creepy are Venom underoos?

Because it’s a Marvel movie, my good man. These things make a billion dollars each and Carol is the vanguard of the next phase. It’s really not as complicated as you’re trying to make it, people get excited about these things because they have an established track record of making entertaining movies.
Not sure what else you’re looking for. If you actually watched the trailer and saw some of the crazy crap she was doing in space, excitement feels like a fairly natural reaction. Not only that, just an aside, but seeing the visual effects used for her powers made me feel like MCU Nova is entirely possible.

snake5289 12-05-2018 01:58 AM

Nova damn sure better be coming. I wanna see Richie pulling out some Annihilus innards.

Ain't that the truth. Figuarts can't even capture her likeness. Some people see it, but I just don't. I guess she's the female Chris Evan, a face so generic, no one seems to be able to capture her likeness.

God yes. Since the Fox buyout surely they can do an Annihilation movie.

snake5289 12-05-2018 10:55 AM

Annihilation is definitely something they need to build up to some day.

Brownfinger 12-05-2018 11:19 AM

I want that in the MCU more than anything else, at this point.

Digital Ghost 12-05-2018 12:31 PM

Am I the only who thinks the leather jacket version of Captain Marvel looks a lot like Amy Poehler?

goliathfasa 12-05-2018 12:46 PM

I used to like Carol.

Then they insisted on making her literally space Nazi, but somehow supposedly still the "good guy".

Maybe this movie will salvage her image a bit, and the comics could follow suit and retcon her severely damaged character.

The figures aren't inspiring much confidence though. Such bland. Much meh.

JokerArkham 12-05-2018 01:18 PM

i really like the leather jacket version
must be the cat :D

Ragnarok was pretty bad. Seems like they could not decide on which audience to appeal.

SHAFT!

I'd say the Agents of SHIELD Fury would work better as Shaft. He's in the trench, wearing black and he's already bald.

That's a bold statement. It's rare to find people who openly dislike Ragnarok. Personally, I enjoyed it but I will admit that the zaniness could've been toned down.

snake5289 12-05-2018 10:14 PM

Personally I think Ragnarok was okay at best and is easily one of my least favorite MCU movies. It's tone is all over the place, basically turned Thor into Star-Lord, and I hated the half-ass job it did of shoehorning in Planet Hulk.

Prem1x 12-06-2018 09:41 AM

Wow these figures look like dudes. Unless the movie does amazing, these are going to warm badly.

Donald 12-06-2018 06:33 PM

So I'm the only one confused/surprised by the cat being in handcuffs? Is it Steve Martin's cat?

In the comics Carol's cat turned out to be a dangerous shape-shifting alien so I think it's safe to assume that's what the movie is going off of.

Two words: bat nipples.

The really GREAT Batman movie still has not been made.

Re: this movie, I just hope Mar-Vell gets a real kick-ass super suit. That was one of the things that originally drew me to the character in the 70s. If it's just mediocre like Danvers, I'll be bummed.
