I think the price is slightly high, but not outrageous. I love Thundercats, and this looks cool, but I don't know if the coolness factor+price+display value will end up being enough for me to get this. It holds a good handful of figures, but it is low and wide, so I would need a big shelf. A Cat's Lair would be taller, and would be a great means to display a whole bunch of figures. Jabba's Sail Barge is huge, but I can display a ton of figures in and on it. I guess with huge items like this, for me, it's more about how I can use them to enhance the display of figures. I also think it's an odd choice to do this, during a pandemic, after only one wave of the related figures has actually shipped. How about an Astral Moat Monster, or a Skycutter, or a simpler playset of the interior of Mumm-Ra's pyramid, with his sarcophagus, statues, and the pool he looks in to to spy on The Thundercats. This just seems like too much, too soon, and not my first choice for a big Thundercats item. At least it doesn't include an exclusive figure to really tempt me (Which would have been a smart thing for them to do)- even throwing in Snarfer would make this much more tempting.

I preordered through Sideshow. $450(before tax and shipping) with $45 NRD and then 8 payments of $51 a month starting in June.

Hemming and hawing between Super 7 or BBTS. The last thing I ordered direct from Super 7 was the Marvel Conan figure. Does Super 7 charge sales tax?
If they don't then it would be cheaper than BBTS (BBTS apprx 540 with sales tax) but will be part of a pre-existing PoL that will be shipped for 4 bucks. |

$500?! These toy companies know how to prey on the nostalgia bone. For that price, I’d be disappointed if it didn’t have real treads.

The price is a lot. There's no getting around it. But having watched the Pixel Dan interview, combined with all the information we've gotten over the years from Hasbro Q&As on their own lines, I get why. I highly recommend watching the video for some good insider info on the manufacturing process.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2jY...ature=emb_logo In short, it can't really be compared to any of the other crowd-sourced items because the numbers on it are expected to be pretty low. I'll bet they're only expecting about 2k-3k units. The Razor Crest needed 6000 to fund - yeah, it sold a ton more than that, but Thundercats aint Star Wars. He mentions in the video that their tooling costs are around $450k, which means they need to sell a 1000 units just to cover tooling, let alone the cost of actually making the thing, putting it together, paint aps, etc. |
I think that Sideshow has been owned by Entertainment Earth for a little while, so it makes sense that some more "premium" items that EE carries would also be listed on the Sideshow site.

Yeah, I hadn't heard that. Were you thinking of Diamond Select and Gentle Giant maybe?
|
Entertainment Earth definitely does not own Sideshow Toys.
|
Yeah Sideshow isn't owned by anyone, but I did notice last year or the year before them starting to carry stuff like Mafex and SH Figuarts. I didn't expect them to carry Super7 stuff though.
Knowing Sideshow though, I would fully expect to pay more than $40 for shipping. They charge like $25-30 for a Hot Toys figure. |
I can understand the asking price on this given the low production numbers. But those treads should REALLY be individual hard plastic links. The rubber looks lame & is bound to have longevity issues, but nobody will hear about it because it'll happen a couple of years down the line when nobody cares anymore. Just feels like this is going to be a short lived dream for those that want it.

I know the issues with the price has been stressed a thousand times already, but the fact that I can buy my 6 year old a Power Wheels Land Rover that he can not only drive himself and his little brother down the street with, but can also bump his favorite tunes in the Bluetooth receiver built into it, and for a cheaper cost, than what the Thundertank costs is concerning. I can't help but think that they are bilking collectors of the TC Ultimates line, who know that this is probably the only chance they'll ever have of receiving this vehicle. (They're also being told as much on many a toy podcast by the hosts discussing it....applying further pressure.)
Super 7 knows this too and are really sinking into that. If this was of Hot Toys quality like some of the vehicles they've done...I could see that. In the end though, this is going to be largely hallowed out plastic, and while I'm happy for TC fans finally getting what they want, I kinda feel sorry for them as well as if feels like Super 7 is taking them for a ride. |
I agree on some of this but Brian said the steel mold alone costs $450,000. Super7 needs to sell 1,000 of these just to pay for the mold. Add in materials, wages, shipping and other costs...unless super7 sells way over 2,000 like almost 3,000....there is not much profit...if any.
Those cars for kids to ride are so massed produced and share so much tooling....I remember in the 80s the ones my brother and I had were $40. He had big foot. And that was the cost of the ghostbusters fire house then. |

Absolutely nothing from the Thundertank is re-used. Everything on it will be straight as an arrow and fit perfect. |
And do you realize just how many Powerwheels they make?

I totally agree, this is getting into the realm of ridiculousness. These $400-$1000 ultra “realism” detailed collectibles is crazy. $600 snake mountains? $400 catmobiles? Honestly, I think as collectors we need to sit back, clear our thoughts, and just say no. Yes, I realize I’m not one to tell anyone how to spend their money. Pot calling kettle black, etc. but I sit back and look at my personal collection, as well as the flood of super expensive “toys” catering to people who have impulse control issues (face it, that’s why they do these super narrow ordering timeframes)... when it was collectors going into kB toys or tru and competing against 8 yr olds for a $12 toy was one thing. Now it’s $50+ to $200+ on average and production is purposefully reduced to encourage a loot mentality. These are less about being toys and more about being “investment collectibles”.
I dunno, I just see it differently now than when I started collecting years ago. Again, not judging you who are buying this, I’m just seeing the toy collecting community taking a dangerous turn. |
