I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by how many people here are acting like this is all something new.

It seems new because up until recently figures have been coming with real guns aplenty. I just bought Grim Knight and he's loaded with guns. Hell, that The Hood Marvel Legends figure upcoming has two very realistic guns so I'm unsure why Zemo gets some kind of goofy ass laser pistol.

Also, the Classified Series Joes have mostly real looking guns.

Obviously this has happened before. I remember in the early 2000s Cartoon Network put bright neon colors over guns in their cartoons and had them shoot poorly edited in lasers and removed blood. They also edited out deaths, which was flat out hilarious when they aired an episode of Gundam 0080 where almost every character died. THe episode was severely shortened and the plot made little sense because everyone kept disappearing.

Stormtroopers would presumably be fine since they don't use real guns anyway.

So I guess they should get rid of Hot Wheels next since cars kill people every day? How about stopping manufacturing in China since they commit mass genocide on Muslims like fucking weekly?

I mean, they don't get rid of movies and TV shows showing people shooting the shit out of each other so I don't get why they seem to want toys to not have guns.

Don't market Baron Zemo in your TV show with a real gun if you don't want toys of him to have a real gun. But nope, since the more money is made on the TV show and it's subscription service they'll only "think of the children" with the toys. Since clearly kids aren't watching Zemo shoot people with a real gun on TV! Only having a toy with a gun inspires kids to kill, not actually watching people kill on TV!

It's dumb but that's not really comparable. The gun violence debate pops up in an extremely high profile manner every time there's a mass shooting now (which is far too frequent, but that's a whole other discussion) and it's made certain parties wary. It sucks that it's having an impact on toys but oh well. There are plenty of McFarlane scale guns I could swap onto the Suicide Squad figures.

Yeah I recall the collector community taking notice of this as far back as the Domino figure from the Sasquatch Marvel Legends wave, whenever that was.

"To Hell with guns and smokes you say? We have been requested to omit these items from our current marketing photos but if there is anyone who can go to Hell and get them, it’s Constantine. You’ll need to have faith in Mezco on this one!"

I think that's because Constantine was probably prototyped/conceived right before/just as the DC "no guns" rule was happening, so they managed to get the figure to still have them but couldn't show them. In the interview with Mez from back in May, iirc he specifically says that due to the rule, he wouldn't be able to release Two Face with any of the guns he came with if he had been revealed now.

I think what's especially tripping some people up with understanding this is how quickly the rule seems to have gone into effect, with several figures created before the rule took effect still quite available, like Grim Knight.

Baron Zemo is the most recent example.

Which makes me wonder why McFarlane hasn't at least done the same, or if WB won't even let him get away with that compromise.

Given how long it's been happening and how very not universal it's been for the Marvel figures, I think if anything it's basically more of a "try not to have too many realistic guns, not outright disallowed, just try to keep the number down" situation, compared to the WB/DC outright "no guns at all" rule.

I think it more accurate to say in those cases that the line has mostly "close enough" looking guns, but they're still all sci-fied up and are only only "real looking" to those that don't really know what a real gun would look like.

But either way, it's not a new issue for Hasbro anymore than it is for McFarlane.

It's also clearly character based with Marvel as well. They can sneak a few out with say Punisher, but a Spider-Man is never going to come with anything anywhere near realistic. Even Deadpool often has "NERF" guns.

The Suicide Squad Figures In and Out of Packaging Photos with New Variants - The Toyark - News

I'm unsure how to feel that the CW Flash show, on a shoestring budget, had a more accurate and menacing looking King Shark than a multi million dollar movie.

McFarlane is making a killing with those unmasked variants that don't even look like the actor.

First sentence is absolutely correct. But then again when has DC actually taken advantage of building a franchise around something that people enjoyed in a different medium?

Second, you ain't kidding. Ever since Joe explained on a different thread when I mentioned the question about why different heads instead of taking Marvel's queue on inclusion, it makes sense. Toddy hasn't just milked it, he's hooked up the machine to the udders. And the likenesses save for helmeted figures, or Margot Robbie (arguably) are REALLY awful.

The guns thing is fine. Too many figures with them, and most of it goes into a drawer or Ziploc. And as mentioned, it's an R rated movie as it is. I think the greater danger would be if they had a voice chip for these things. Parents fainting everywhere.

This line just isn't my bag, but I do hope if you like it, you'll be able to get it.

Designincase 07-01-2021 06:07 AM

I very much dislike how this is being done.

Just put the unmasked head in the same box. There is nothing significantly different otherwise. Especially if that unmasked head isn't going to have a strong likeness to the actor.

The BAF parts then seem totally redundant if you can just buy it all together. Why put all that waste in there?

I get making figures is expensive but this isn't the way.

As for guns. I get it if you have baggies of it but others don't. If you've only been collecting Mcfarlane, you barely have enough guns.

Unlike other situation, money isn't the issue. The director used this specific design with intent. He very much did not want you to see a muscle bound terrifying King Shark. They didn't want him to look menacing.....until he's biting your head off.

It's like cutting a glasgow smile into Jokers mouth and making him use makeup in universe to get white skin and green hair. Not comic accurate but it has been done with intent.

Whether that's good or not is up to you.

Harbinger 07-01-2021 07:10 AM

So not only are there unmasked variants (wtf macfarlane….get outta the 90’s and just pack the extra heads with the regular fig) along with regular version mcfarlane just made buying the whole couchpotato shark wave invalid. What a shitshow.

IzzyTipsy 07-01-2021 07:34 AM

The only reason I see to buy that King Shark is if you already have Lebowski Thor.

These two would make a fine display.

classicaaron 07-01-2021 07:39 AM

just when i thought the unmasked variants couldnt get anymore cash grab he decides to do them on a deluxe figure, and head sculpts that are horrendous. no thanks

JCarterVA 07-01-2021 09:52 AM

He is up for sale on Walmart site. Just placed an order.

dukefett 07-01-2021 10:05 AM

I got King Shark on Walmart, it's up now. I'm getting him to fight the Mezco Baron Bends lol. I bought McFarlane's mechanical shark thing too.

The figures look like dog shit and like everyone's saying a double release just for the head is absurd.

These are going to clog shelves for a long time. The Target by me has like 30 Golden Armor Wonder Womans that were there since mid-2020 or whenever they shipped. Nobody wants these things, they're the only things you can actually find in store these days. What garbage.

Has there even been any indication that McFarlane plans to do a 2nd wave? I'm hoping it's true because we definitely need Rick Flagg and some of the others on the team. Definitely want a figure of Harley in her red/black outfit like the Figuarts figure because the red dress one is just lame. Horrible decision to do that outfit first. I see it pegwarming badly in stores.

Also TNI reported recently that the Birds of Prey Harley Quinn figure (pink tanktop/yellow overalls) might still be coming. It was originally teased on the back of the packaging for the first wave of McF figures but never came out, but supposedly it might finally be coming.

Cyclopswc 07-01-2021 11:59 AM

So are the figures without helmets chase figures?

Absolutely agree with this. Not to mention these are 7" figures, so your Marvel Legends/GIJoe/Star Wars guns won't work on these scale wise. But that's all besides the point. The point is, characters like Bloodsport and Peacemaker have very distinctive weapons. You can't just slap a M4 on them. They NEED their weapons!

zonedweeby 07-01-2021 12:26 PM

I respect not including guns with toys you're selling to kids, but why are you selling The Suicide Squad toys to kids?

But more importantly, no torso joints? Bloodsport and Polka Dot Man look like they could have those rubber tunic things, but Peacemaker? I was planning to get the wave, but I was hoping they'd look less rough at production.

Looks like ol todd is getting in on the cheapo designs now too.

Robogeek28 07-01-2021 01:35 PM

Pre-ordered King Shark for now until I find out for sure whether or not he has good leg articulation.

Nerdtainment 07-01-2021 02:05 PM

Garbage, garbage, garbage. Most of these look like garbage. No guns is freaking stupid when the movie has tons of guns. John Cena looks like he had a stroke. Why the hell are they making a Gold Label King Shark when he is the BAF for this series? Which he also looks dumb (both in the movie and figrue)

Yeah, HARD pass on this series. His movie series figures have been awful. Stick to the comic versions of heroes pal, I'll still buy those.

hasbroherofan 07-01-2021 02:50 PM

Bloodsport looks more like Cress Williams than Idris Elba.

IzzyTipsy 07-01-2021 04:04 PM

There's no way Mcfarlane is using face scanning tech, right? Because this is like 2015 Black Series levels of face sculpts.

Never heard of releasing a BAF as a separate release the same time you have it as the BAF of a wave.

At this point Harley may sell and the rest will rot.

I would have to concur. I mean John Cena looks dumb as hell irl but I’m not convinced his noggin is so Idaho spud-shaped in meatspace.
