I think the best toy investment decision anyone can make is to not buy any of them.

CLASSIFIED 09-07-2011 12:57 PM

I think action figures made in the 80's are more expensive now because the kids that played with them are all grown up but still like toys.

Nexodusrex 09-07-2011 01:15 PM

You know what toys you buy these days if You want them to go up in value? Freaking Lego.
I can saftely say every lego set doubles in value if mint in box a year after release. look at Ebay.
If you want to truely get a collectors item, you buy yourself some lego now and store it.
and its the perfect time if your a marvel or dc fan cause you can get those sets.

Yeah, I've been collecting LEGO Bionicle figures since the day they started the line, and the price nowadays for a number of those guys are ridiculous - sealed or built.

Boba Fettuccini 09-07-2011 05:17 PM

Original 1999 Boba Fett Slave One goes for like $100 with all the pieces. I've thought about selling my Legos a couple times, but honestly, I'd rather keep them. Legos are timeless, and I've never met a kid who wouldn't play with em. I'll keep them around on the off-chance that I have a kid/kids some day.

Hoping for an excuse to play with them, again?
"Honey, I'm pregnant."
"YAY! MOAR LEGOS!!!"

lol, I kid.

But more seriously, that's probably why they maintain value. A 30 year old lego brick is just as good and useful as one you bought this afternoon. As you said, they are indeed timeless. Almost literally.
And for someone who collects legos, they're never a bad gift. "Oh, I don't like Pirates... hey, I'll use the pieces from this other set and make it into a speedboat!" and simular things.

Boba Fettuccini 09-07-2011 05:46 PM

You may kid, but that's part of it. I know when I was little, my mom and/or dad would always help me build the bigger sets, and there was much playing on the living room floor. I think it's crucial to spend that kind of time with your child. If you don't, the kid ends up psycho. I've seen it happen.

domshen 09-07-2011 05:52 PM

"the only way to win is not to play!" LMAO

I dont feel that way. I personally love collecting, I prefer to buy in stores because a big part of it for me is the rush of the hunt. Flipping through all those crappy peg warmers to finally find that figure that you have been lusting after for so long. I love revision cases because I wont pay above retail. I may pick up a couple extra exclusive figures or maybe some harder to find stuff to trade people on the boards with to get figures that I cant find in my area but I dont collect for the "possible value". If there where the case I would not open every figure I buy and put it on a shelf :-D.

I went to a small TF convention this weekend and a buddy had a dealer table so I took a few TF's that I didnt want in my collection or I didnt want to figure out how to pack when I move next month and just about broke even on what I originally paid for them. I was able to under cut BBTS and EBAY prices for people, get about what I paid for and help some fellow collectors fill in some gaps. I consider that a win win in my book.

I understand the sentiment... like training hard your whole life and finally winning the gold medal and then they start handing out gold medals to everyone else for free. LOL.

But for me I love the revision cases since I usually never find stuff the first time around. LOL. BTW just found a Moon Knight today... Yay me.

I agree. Having a HTF figure makes you feel better about your collection as a whole. IMO it is just like... IDK... having an all-star quarterback that makes your entire team better.

I only buy the figs I want though and I never buy anything for the sole reason that it is HTF... it just so happens that sometimes the fig I want is also HTF. LOL.

scottmurdock 09-07-2011 06:37 PM

Like a lot of you I'm actually glad the HTF's were reisssued. Can't beat having a second chance at flame-on Torch, classic Ms. Marvel, Bullseye, Moon Knight, Black Panther, etc.

KshatriyaNZ666 09-07-2011 07:01 PM

Didn't know Moon Knight was HTF - think he was my first MU, or was it the Punisher (black gloves)? Anyways, got them both at Stop & Shop. I really regret getting that Punisher though, just wasn't satisfied with it. Couldn't hold anything and the face irked me.

Seril 09-08-2011 07:08 AM

I try not to buy on the secondary market if I can help it. I'm a loose collector so for me it doesn't make sense to shell out the higher prices for hard to get figures. In a few years once the next big thing comes out the prices will drop and I'll be able to pick them up loose for cheap. I find loose cheap older figures at the local comic shop all the time for under $5. It's nice grabbing Marvel Legends and the older 5" figures that way.

I stupidly passed on some things when i started collecting, like one of my comic shops maybe two years ago had blade, black panther and white gloved punisher. I only bought the punisher and the others were gone before I could blink. I also passed on skrull giant man back in the day and prob. would still. Now I learned my lesson and buy a new fig without question cause I dont wanna repeat the same mistake twice, especially with the insane amount of collectors pining for them.

I hate the leg ariculation on the original Black Panther/ Punisher sculpt.

Yes that body and the Dare Devil body should never passed QC testing. The prototype Black Panther body was different. Then it comes out and it the punisher's body which never looked good from the start. Then it gets re-released in a 2 pack with a cape. Come on.

I have several peices in my collection that I would be happy just to get back my initail investment on. Not that i was buying for resale, just after a while you end up with too much stuff. Especially with transformers. Right before all of the reissues started popping up the prices were rediculous.

I recently went to a secondary market collector store that sells loose MU figs for $7 and up. I almost fainted. I was thinking $5 max. I didn't even bother looking at the larger loose toys. What ever happened to a loose fig not being more money than it is at retail carded. Just because they want to charge $15 for something that costs $7 doesn't mean it's worth half of there price once its opened.

I don't mind the 2 pack version as much.

I don't like the original one because the knees bend forward all the time.

The sculpt is okay, I guess.

I swapped heads on my Blade with Destro and made an updated Destro out of him.

Not really HTF now with the revision cases, but I missed him the first time around... didn't buy MU back then, only Joes... sort of laughed at the MU section when I walked past it at Walmart actually. LOL.

But I was also holding out to see if the new CP Moon Knight would be updated like the new CP Daredevil, but alas... no... same mold. And I prefer my Moon Knight with a black face instead of the white face Avenger CP one, so I'm glad I found the single card one at Target recently.
