I don't know how you guys leave them in package. I usually rip the package open when I get in the car. :D

usagent27 01-15-2012 08:30 AM

i say out of the package! for those of you who have them MOC check out the A.C.B.A. facebook page or just google A.C.B.A.

Being a Transformers collector, I almost feel I need to open my stuff to determine if it was worth my money. I like to mess with it and see if it's actually a good figure or if it's total crap. Granted, Transformers is also unique in that the package does hold value, with bios and tech specs on the back or side of the card/box. That being said, I do have some figures in the box still, but this is usually out of pure laziness. The figure is going to be displayed in whatever mode it's in in package, so why bother opening it? I'm also guilty though of buying multiples of the same figure, for instance, Hound is one I have usually two figures of, one in package one out of, but he's my favorite Transformer as well.

On the opposite hand, I also collect the vintage Star Wars vintage figures, and keeping the package has no point. There's no bio on the back, nothing but general line info and a picture of the original figure and packaging. Those ones get opened and posed/displayed every time. Same with the Iron Man and Marvel movie superheroes, Pirates of the Caribbean and basically all my other collectibles, they are opened and displayed. Granted though, like the Transformers certain ones have info on the package so the card or box is kept.

Still, you're not going to be able to find everything at the store on the shelves in the box. ;)

True that.

can't we have both?! :D

Ash from Carolina 01-15-2012 10:30 AM

I'm an out of package person myself.

With my Transformers part of the fun is transforming them. Well except for those few figures with pain in the rear transformations you only want to tackle just one time.

With my GI Joe stuff some times a figure just doesn't seem to have the best gun for a character and the only way to solve that is to open the pack and change out the weapon with something from my box of spare weapons.

For all the figures it just feels like I can come up with a pose that works better than the in package look. Or some day I just feel like posing figures together in some sort of little diorama.

Although I try to be nice when looking for something on e-Bay and I only buy out of package figures when I'm bidding on something. I figure that packaging means more to someone else so I leave those for the in package collectors to bid on.

I am a MOC collector, and my ceiling of my toyroom is wallpapered with Hot Wheels. Action Figures I would never put on the ceiling just because I'm afraid of the damage it would do to the card and I only put MU and rare other figures in cases otherwise I could blow probably $1000 on just protective cases.

Shawn Woodbeck 01-15-2012 11:18 AM

I'm an MOC collector. I have each MU figure cozy in a star case. For MU comic packs, team packs and exclusives I have put them in clear freezer/recycle bags. The dust is brutal. :D I also have all of these carefully stored in rubbermaid containers. I would display them if I had the room but, sadly :( I don't.

Been lurking here for years but had time to post today! As someone who's been LCS employee, former online vendor, and collecting since 1991 (not just keeping my toys as a kid, collecting!) I've been both at different times for different reasons

Curious MOC guys... are you planning on selling your collections in the future? Is that why you keep them carded?

Really curious as to why you keep stuff carded. Especially those who collect 1990's-current stuff like DCUC and MU... Why do you keep stuff carded?

The artwork is pretty cool on some figures so I keep them carded, but having loose figures makes displaying them so much easier because of the sheer amount of space a good collection takes up. I recently sold off most of my MU collection because I needed the cash, but I still have a bunch of 12 in. Sideshow figures on display so I wasn't too terribly bummed out.

Or loose figures.

I rip them open then cut out the cool bits(card arts, file cards)
the day I stop opening and playing with my toys is the day I stop collecting.

I can't bring myself to open them. I like the art and the fact that they look awesome carded. I remember as a kid opening toys and having brand new toys with loose and/or broken limbs right out of the packaging. It really sucked. I read alot of posts on here with the same issue. You'd think that wouldn't be an issue nowadays but..... I'm not willing to take a chance on that happening now.

warmachine6 01-15-2012 02:46 PM

for me they have to be open i feel like their in a prison saying "open me , let me be free " i know some collectors say oh no ! you ripped the packing open it worthless!!! and im like -_- okay i see where you guys are coming from but these figures have a value to me that doesnt inculde money but just being able to look after them and have them in my room in cool poses i wouldnt want to sell them. Although i intend to bring them to life by making a stop-motion film ( not in production yet , i... need more figures and time) so thats what they bascially mean to me and that i dont plan on selling just keeping them till the day i die. If i knew i was i would possibly give them away. possibly to family memebers or my fellow arkers :D

Spacemafia 01-15-2012 04:28 PM

Wow I open and would hate to have a room look like a Toy Aisle. I was looking at the first few post with figs Cards behind cards and Cards on top of cards and you could only see the bottom....Doesnt look fun....

The reason I started collecting was because my son likes these and it reminds me of when I used to play with loose GIJoes when I was his age so I buy 2 of the figures he likes so we both have one (his all loose, mine all MOC). I keep them carded and in cases because I hope to someday pass them down to him in good condition. If my father had done that with my JOEs that would blow my mind seeing them again. That's what I hope to do with him.

I wish my dad did that for me. All those Star Wars and MOTU MOC would be MIND-BLOWING and worth a FORTUNE!!!!!!!

Cool shelving, I really like that! :)

Enigma2K2 01-15-2012 07:20 PM

I don't buy to resell. I buy because I want them. Open.

roadrevenge 01-15-2012 08:36 PM

I do not buy to resell them either, thats why all the extra Shockers I picked up I sold for what I paid plus shipping.

I love the packaging, and the work that it took to do it. I do admit that my whole collection would take up alot less room open. lol. But thats how I fight the urge, I buy one to open here and there.

xredmenacex 01-16-2012 07:59 AM

Thanks, Black Magnus.

I used these: Room Essentials® Ledge - White (24") : Target
