I won't touch DC Essentials until DCC proves to me they are going to support the line by giving me classic versions of character and more than just the main DC heroes. Release Jonah Hex, Spectre, Dr Fate, and Gorilla Grodd, then I'll consider it.

Hey Dr Kain, just in case you didnt know those 4 were all released under the DC Universe Classics line (Grodd was a BAF) not sure how much they are now on the secondary market though

I know they were, but I sold off my entire DCUC collection when the Icons line came out expecting DCC to really go all in with it.

The worst part is, I sold off my Flash Rogues just before the line was reported canned.

Oh sorry to hear that, that sucks, sorry to hear that! I wish DCUC had gotten more rogues, as we only got Captain Cold, Grodd, Mirror Master, Reverse Flash and Captain Boomerang (not classic but his "Brightest Day" look)

smaller comp? no way, its DC comics! ive NEVER heard that about the preorder thing but ohh well, just deosnt make sense to me.

Dr Kain 08-30-2017 09:49 PM

Yeah, I don't care what anyone says, it's DC Comics, so they don't get the excuse of being a smaller company.

It's less about how small they are as a company overall and more about how relatively small their market is. Even though they're owned by DC Comics, their market is still roughly as small as any other collectible company's.

jwyss234 08-30-2017 11:35 PM

Smaller company was how they were describing themselves in the video. Just to be clear the money DC Entertainment makes off of toys comes from Mattel, not DC Collectibles. Mattel holds the master license for DC toys and their products are in most physical retail stores across the country while DC Collectibles is limited to comic shops. While both companies have an even chance at online stores like Amazon or BBTS, the sales numbers for Mattel's DC toys will always dwarf the sales numbers for DC Collectibles at physical retail stores. After all, there's a Walmart in just about every town whereas a comic shop will be harder to find. You can turn your nose up at all of the role playing masks and weapons, the cheap basic figures, the Wonder Woman Barbie dolls, or even the DC Multiverse figures. But they're easy for parents to buy and bring in the money for DC. Since DC Collectibles has a limited market, they have to make sure that what they produce sells.

One other thing that needs to be cleared up is the money. DC Collectibles is a part of DC Entertainment. All of the money DCE makes from their different divisions (movies, tv, comics, toys) is distributed throughout the company. It's not in some big pot for any manager to help themselves to. While they can move funds to where they are needed, each division is expected to support itself. This means DC Collectibles is largely responsible for making sound decisions that will result in profits. If DC Entertainment felt that they were losing too much money on DCC, they could shut down that part of the business. Mattel holds the master toy license so it's not like they are depriving fans of DC figures.

where are you getting your info, do you work for DC? or are you just invented stuff as you type, not convinced.

Basic logic based on obvious observations, I'd think.

lordbest 08-31-2017 03:22 AM

DCC have said as much in several interviews at SDCC and elsewhere. Pixel Dan and ShartimusPrime would be good ones to look up. They sell primarily to collectibles and online stores, not large retailers. They produce in small quantities as a result, so prices are higher per figure. They use demand from the retailers in the form of pre-orders to gauge demand.

The stuff about how businesses operated is literally just how they operate, you don't need to be in DC to know that a subsidiary has to make money to justify its existence.

Bearjew 08-31-2017 08:52 AM

I never really had a chance to get into this line which is disappointing in a sense but seeing how the future of it is going I am happy I didn't.
I ordered the justice league 7 pack around Christmas off of Amazon and got some KO. It really demotivated me for the line and I never got a chance to pick it back up before they cancelled.

I do have Martian Manhunter and one of my favorites in my collection, Darkseid. I am completely happy with those as Darkseid is one of my favorite figures that I own. I will probably still fill out the theme with other figures, but it is a disappointment that the line failed.

EvilMonkeyPope 09-12-2017 04:23 PM

Be warned: Supergirl now has Twizzler-vision!

He's referring to Supergirl's alternate head with the heat vision eyes. And yes, the figure actually comes with it. There are some reviews popping up on Youtube.

lordbest 09-12-2017 10:16 PM

Icons Supergirl was solicited with heat vision eyes, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Dr Kain 09-13-2017 06:11 AM

Yeah, but I mean the twizzler vision.

Team Jetfire 09-13-2017 08:06 PM

Saw it in person, looks pretty great.

Phantomcrow 09-13-2017 10:34 PM

Saw Supergirl today. Really strange that the heat vision rays are removable. The alternate head looks like someone burned holes into her face where her eyes used to be. It looks like a japanese ghost story head from the Ring or Grudge or something.

Over all the figure looks really great. I felt the Supersons set looked kinda small, but had a ton of extras in the box. Like a dozen hands and stuff.

Dr Kain 09-14-2017 07:12 AM

A shame that DCC has axed this line as they do look like great figures.

saw these yesterday and thought they looked great as well and would def have been worth picking up if the line was still a real thing. But..i feel like why bother. I think they'll be cheap down the line someplace.

Lionheart 09-19-2017 12:33 PM

Sad sad sad. I'm still gutted about Shazam and the way they decided to more or less can the line. Supergirl's bleeding eye accessory is bizarre.

Augustus_Cole 09-24-2017 01:28 AM

went to pick up Supergirl yesterday...
had her in hand but then was looking at this other recent release supergirl (non-icons...i forget which one)..and she actually looked cooler to me.
I stared at the both of them trying to make a decision...then decided i don't need either.

JAG2045 11-23-2017 11:50 AM

Saw the Doomsday/Superman 2 pack in my LCS today, looks really nice and the packaging has an outer box which when removed reveals a very cool "destroyed city" backdrop for the figs

Is this the last Icons set or are any more due out?

It should be the last release for Icons.

Which is a shame for me because I was really hoping they'd do a Knightfall set, similar to this Doomsday one, with Bane and a battle-damaged Batman. I think DCC should've stuck with this line more than they did, it's probably not healthy for them to constantly start up and then quickly end lines and the lack of commitment might translate over to their Essentials line ending prematurely.
