Hopefully these are priced just right, would like to get 2 sets…

EvilMonkeyPope 08-16-2023 04:38 PM

Strahovski as Moonstone would be superb.

Shed be perfect for moonstone. The bad girls are hotter anyways.

Eh I always thought Katheryn Winnick would have been a better Carol or Karla

Winnick was actually my second choice for Carol after Strahovski, and I think she would play a good Moonstone. Not to go on looks alone here, but Strahovski has a bit more of a "bad girl" look than Winnick so I think she'd be a better fit by that, but I'd be happy with Winnick.

Caliban head piece came in the mail earlier today.

Glad I finally have the head piece for Caliban since most of the time the head pice can get a bit pricey if still boxed with Beast

I finally got around to picking up the vol 3 Star-Lord. Pretty much right out of the box I gave him the masked head and blasters from my vol 2 figure from the Ego pack. This is the best Chris Pratt head we've gotten but I just really wanted to have the masked head on this uniform to get it even closer to the comic look. I popped the vol 3 head on the the Love and Thunder body and it actually quite redeems that figure for me. The arms and most of the legs on this release are just repainted carry-over from the vol 2 figure and mine came with his right boot-shin turned around, it was an easy correction but still struck me as odd. There's some smudge to his red paint but nothing I consider atrocious and overall he looks good.

I wanted Winnick for Danvers. She's beautiful and a very believable bad ass. I just don't think Larson is that great of an actress and when she flexed she always seemed more petulant than intimidating.

I feel like Carol is just outside of Larson's range. There are other roles she might have knocked out of the park, this was for sure not one of them

Agreed Larson can't stop playing Carol as a one note with 0 emotion . She always has that pissed off look on her face 24/7

Id like to see Carol Danvers more in the way she was in the Avengers EMH cartoon.

While I’ve haven’t read much of the character post 2008/12ish outside of Ewing’s Ultimates, Carol, IMO, has always read as a little wooden and aloof/prickly making Larson’s performance feel accurate. It makes sense given her background in the military and the dynamics involved in a woman rising through the ranks within a traditionally (and profoundly) patriarchal system. She would have experienced a great deal of second guessing and hostility attaining her rank and, as a result, she would brook no foolishness. I think Brie is playing the role correctly. She doesn't need to smile more.

Veronica Mars 08-21-2023 01:26 PM

I suppose a big part of it is that we don't get thought bubbles or internal monologues in the MCU. So if you aren't familiar with the source material, the characterization comes off one dimensional if the actor isn't up to nuisance. While Brie Larson may be portraying female military personnel accurately, she isn't necessarily doing Carol Danvers justice

Fair enough, I hear you, but we’re also seeing Carol at the beginning of her super-herodom (it’s actually a word lol) when she would’ve been more guarded and had less development as a character and person. I’ll grant you that Captain Marvel is much deeper now than she was as Ms. Marvel. However, when I read her in bronze and copper age comics, she had a good amount of social awkwardness and was even testy with other heroes. Of course, she was an alcoholic at the time and had been through serious trauma at the hands of Rogue and the Brood.

WallySparks 08-21-2023 05:07 PM

You need to read the original good stuff of Uncanny X-Men from the 1980s where Carol Danvers was more of an ally to help out the X-Men at the time. Plus she was more known as Binary.

Dont read the 2008-2012 bullcrap

Dr Kain 08-21-2023 09:14 PM

While I like what they did with her as Binary, to me, Carol only exists so Rogue can happen.

lordbest 08-21-2023 10:56 PM

As a big comic Carol fan I think Larson does a great job personally, within the constraints of the MCU.

I guess they complement each other quite well given both of them are an emotionaless bot.

I know a few female military personnel. One is actually SF. They do not walk around with chips on their shoulders, fists and jaws clenched. They have an easy and almost quiet swagger about them. They are confident.

I don't think Larsen portrays a great member of military personnel. Because she seems more PETULANT. Like a spoiled misunderstood kid.

lordbest 08-22-2023 06:29 AM

I think you're projecting a lot onto her performance that is not there.

I appreciate that and what you say is true of many members of the military. Anecdotally, I have family that are career military, both men and women and they run the gamut of personality types. Many are easier going while some others do have noticeably rigid personalities - understandable considering that when lives are on the line, ordered steps keep you breathing. Additionally, and without giving up too many personal deets, I do have a female inlaw who left a decorated armed service career for civilian life after not being promoted despite her success and national recognition. All that said, this isn’t so much about military tropes or sterotypes as it is, imo, about Carol Danvers and how she’s been portrayed in the books. Brie has the proper tone for how I believe Carol would behave given what we know of the character and the circumstances/changes laid out within the MCU. I can only hope that we see the MCU character grow as she did in the books which, I imagine, will reflect in how Larson approaches the role.

You're right. A lot of her performance is simply not there. I think overall she's wooden and one-dimensional. And that one-dimension is not a believable "bad ass". She comes across as an angry teenager more so than a hero fueled with "I'm gonna straight kick your ass" fury. If you feel differently then, great.

This goes back to why I thought Katheryn Winnick would have been a better Carol Danvers. Could have something to be with playing a Viking Queen for several years.

hasbroherofan 08-22-2023 09:33 AM

Oh nice, a Brie Larson sucks thread. Haven't seen one of those on the internet in the last 5 years.

Nah. This is just a slightly more intellectualised version of "she'd be prettier if she smiled more".
