Blade was peg warmer around here for awhile, passed so many times. Oops!

Has anyone ever had a bad Sophie's choice moment with MU? mine were picking stealth IM over flaming human torch and bullseye, I thought for sure Stealth IM would be the hot figure of the moment and bullseye and torch would peg warm. The other was picking Rulk over Blade.... twice! I still kick myself.

My first MU was classic Ms Marvel. When I was young my dad parted ways with his family after his mom passed so he had to get some old stuff from the house or it would be sold. He gave me a few comics but the one I took to was Ms Marvel. It was her vs Tigershark.
When I saw they had a classic Ms Marvel I snatched her up. I showed my dad the figure and then it was funny because he would hit up walmart and started checking the pegs for the female heroes like he would when I was a kid. It was one of the first things my dad and I kinda bonded over after coming out. We now go see all the marvel movies together and he actually just put shelves up in my room for my figures, and before I could even get home here they all were already being moved from my desk to te shelves by him in secrecy. |
^^ That's awesome

My first MU: Electro. I had been talking to a friend who still collected toys and comics, and mentioned that I'd loved Star Wars figures and comics as a kid, and that Electro had been my fave Spidey villain. He said there was a Star Wars sized Marvel line that had just started and was available as Asda (local supermarket). I checked it out and there he was along with several other characters - so I bought (and really liked) the figure. Coupla weeks later Asda had a sale and I decided to pick up the other stray figures; Green Goblin, Daredevil, Iron Man, Iron Fist, Sub-Mariner, Spider-Man and Silver Surfer (they seemed to have got a couple of waves at the same time and there was a mish-mash on the shelves). They were cheap so it seemed like a bargain.
I thought I was done, but then when talking to a friend about the figures I would like to see made but never felt they would, he mentioned that some of them (Wrecking Crew and Absorbing Man) were due out in the 'Secret Wars' comic packs. The two most powerful Marvel words to me for nostalgia are 'Secret Wars'. I had to have those... and while waiting for them to come out, I bought a couple of other figures from the line from eBay / Forbidden Planet. When I got done with Secret Wars news was out that the vintage Captain Britain might get a comic pack release, which meant I had to stay in. At that point I kind of dropped the pretense that I was going to get 'just this one and that one' and realised buying toys was fulfilling a long-dormant need in me. Whenever there was down time in the line I started buying other toy lines and then went full-bore toy collecting mode for about three years, and it's still active now... Tron Legacy toys were massively reduced at a local shop and I got the entire line; Star Wars Vintage; GI Joe 25th; Star Wars Action Fleet; Masters of the Universe Classics; DCU; DC Infinite; Pirates of the Caribbean; Lion Witch & the Wardrobe; Masterpiece Transformers (and G1 reissues); Hot Toys; Turtles; playsets; dio parts - you name it. Insane. Fortunately for me MU has consistently released at least 2 figs a wave that I really want, so I can justify getting all of them. Also, I've found that there is a natural completion point on many lines, providing you can really nail down what it is you want from it. So things actually feel like they've slowed down a little over the last 6 months. There's only a finite number of, say, Masters of the Universe or O/T Star Wars characters, so when you've got them, you can more or less say you're done and then just sit back and get the occasional thing. Apart from MU - which has a massive amount of characters, that seems to be what I've done on several lines now. That was much more than I meant to type. In summary; I don't regret what I've bought, because I genuinely like it and it makes me feel good knowing I have it. But I *do* regret the massive amount of room it takes up... EDIT: ChuckSass - that is a great story. |
That was a pretty great wave..... never gets any love though! Good story En Sabah

http://cdn.list25.com/wp-content/upl...penguifall.gif that part where it stumbled, that was me finding MU that day, glad I did, but not a very good story. The rest of you have some heart-warming tales and it makes me glad to be a part of this community. |

about a year or so later i was in another wally's world perusing the toys again and saw a MU Dr. Doom, my next thought was i wander if they have released the F4 so i could set up a fight, started to look up marvel 3.75 figs and was kinda hooked. |
I like when people use the word "PERUSING" in a converstion. It comes in second, though, to the word "PITUITARY GLAND".... but that doesnt come up too often.

Hmmmm ok, I think I'll chime in. I started collecting right after the Avengers movie pack came out (the one with Loki and the newest Hulk). I have always been a toy collector, first with Toybiz until they started making them in funky poses. Then I became hooked on Jakks when they were cranking out WWE Legends. When Jakks lost the rights, I refused to start over. I had seen MU in the store, but my first thought was $9.99 for those !!!! NO WAY !!! and once agian I had done the toybiz thing already.I had gone thru a bitter divorce and every penny was focused on starting over. My son came to me one day and said, "Dad I reeeeally like the Avengers movie, do you have any of them ?" Living in a apartment now and the toybiz stuff in storage somewhere, I put some money aside and grabbed the walmart box set. He was estatic ! Only for my oldest to point out to her little brother," Hey you dont have the whole team !" So out daddy went and got the second box set. Around that time Avengers EMH was on tv, so since I had them on the weekends they were able to watch it with me. So as they watched the show and various characters showed up, I found myself taking more trips to the store and hobby shops to finish off the (team...now teams.) My passion had come back and a special bond had formed between me and my kids. We now have just about everyone and I send pictures to them as i pick up new ones. I let them know they(the figures) are waiting for them when they get to visit ( I live in a different state now. When I get them(my kids ,now 10 and 7.) We lock ourselves in the playroom ready to save the universe.....until next time. The Avengers movie and MU figs will always have a special place in my heart.

Im thinking of painting a custom black and red shield for US agent. There is one from the Cap concept series a while back, but the price for the pack is rediculous. all i want is the shield.
this one specifically: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-HASBRO-...item35cf7e2c08 |
$18 for a deluxe figure pack is ridiculous?
That shield isn't exactly right, but it's close enough. It's much better than the one US Agent shipped with... |
i know right. the price is high to me only cause i was so used to seeing those packs collecting dust at discount stores.

I'll jump in. I bought a lot of toys when I was growing up in the Philippines, from Power Rangers to DBZ to GI Joes, but I wasn't really sure what the heck I was buying. When we moved to the US, most of my time was spent studying and sometimes playing videogames, and then I had a huge thing for music..so I've just been doing a bunch of random stuff. It wasn't until my sister got married that her husband showed me his IM2 line collection, and I thought "DAMN I WANT THAT" so i bought all the figures from that line from Amazon before they started taxing..but the first one i ever got was the IM that can fit in the bigger iron man suit, i forget what it's called...then I had a lull for a while..I then had a medical school interview in New York...and I thought why not check out the TRU at Times Square, instead of buying clothes..I took home the 2 pack with Rhino and Spiderman, a Colossus figure, and the Ironman 2020...
After that I thought, I'm just going to buy the spiderman figures...after I got those there was so much overlap between characters and some I got for good deals so now i'm pretty much hooked. even got me some BAFs to put in my display with the MUs that I will start to make this summer. |
I was in it from the start after I saw pre-orders on BBTS, planned to just get the X-men and Spider-Man initially. I ended up getting a few more than that........
|
Dr. Francisco!!! I like that sound!
bmorr... a regular shield from a cap and a black ProMarker does the job. Not a sharpie though, as it is actually a very deep purple and not a true black. I like that Samson started with the Avengers movie and his boys like I did! If I can EVER help you and your boys out, let me know!!! Still have yet to hear from my photographer friend yet, i am dying to show you guys kernal's new Vision drawing pic!!!! After the final, finished shot is posted, I will throw the WIP pics up to see and to prove how I 'built' him. And I like the avatar pic of WYLDE BILL....makes sense now knowing that he mostly collects Deadpool and Dr. Doom. And lastly, stoked that Chuck and his dad have something to bond over. Marvel Universe toys are much more than just plastic.... They are dreams, they are hopes, they are rewards, they are memories, they are a connection between generations, they are fun...they are a part of us all.............. they are perfect. |

I don't get when folks talk about regretting passing up on a figure they didn't care for back in the day just because it jumped in value for whatever reason later on. If you didn't care about the character or the figure itself back then, you really shouldn't be caring about it now just because it's worth X amount of dollars, unless you're bummed you can't scalp it for that amount.

Now one character that I passed up on was Firestar, which i regret because she did go up in value. But I only regret it because I loved the old Spiderman & his Amazing Friends cartoon, and her especially, and was forced to shell out twice as much as the original pack cost just for her. And I only passed up on her because I didn't have enough cash on me. |
With MU, my only real reason for passing up on figures was due to lack of funds when I found them or being forced to pick between a couple of them. I passed on Vision not because I didn't care for the character, but because I figured he would shelfwarm long enough for me to pick him up later when I had more money. Yeah, that didn't happen.
Collecting multiple lines on a budget means you have to set priorities. |
