I always assumed earth ended up slightly communist after the third world war.

Also, fifty years of trek, and we've still never seen a starship toilet.

Shadowknight1 02-26-2013 09:10 AM

Prior to Picard's "Money doesn't exist in the 24th century" line in First Contact, there was obviously currency in Star Trek. It was called "credits". Good example is in "The Trouble with Tribbles" where Cyrano Jones was selling the tribbles at 10 credits a "head". Another comes from "Encounter at Farpoint" where Dr. Crusher sees some fabric she likes on Farpoint station and asks for it to be sent to the Enterprise when it arrives and to charge it to her.

I reccently started collecting these. I don't play the game but am happy with the minis. They are def more fragile than the micromachines. Ill have to get around to posting some comparisons this w/e.
The second series is much more focused on non federation ships. So far I picked up a brick of tweleve and 2 singles and only ended up with two fed ships.

bmorr 02-26-2013 11:10 AM

those look wikid detailed. puts the MM's to shame.

That list of Eaglemoss Star Trek looks awesome!!!

Here are some pics of my collection. Most of it is stored in my garage and attic but here is some that I display.

Like I said, they seem to purposely avoid a lot of logistical things. Have we even seen a shower either? I guess there is that scene, I think in Insurrection, with the whirlpool-like tub Riker and Troy are in.

I know they mentioned credits (at least early on) and things but especially in DS9 Quark often mentions how Federation citizens don't use money. These statements are often contradicted in the same episode as Federation officers are easily able to produce latinum. Plus the matter of trade and personal property. Clearly there is some system of wealth but maybe no one is allowed to have more than a certain amount. Recipe for disaster in my opinion. I think the writers wanted to portray certain ideas but don't know how they would actually work out. It makes sense because if we had the solution we'd probably be trying it now.

The thing is that we never really see the proletariat. When you exclude random alien encounters 90% of people we meet are doctors, scientists, starship captains, Starfleet officers, etc. Heck, other than Chief O'Brien I can't think of a single Starfleet NCO or enlisted crewman (TNG era), and O'Brien still mentions going to the Academy. It's like all the lowest ranking people on the ship are random ensigns, which are still officers. Rarely do we meet an adult that human that doesn't have something going for them career-wise.

I need to get the new repainted Enterprise-E and the Enterprise-B big time!

Does anyone have any pictures of the Eaglemoss Star Trek ships in comparison to other Trek ships?

I want the repainted Ent-E, I wonder if it's gotten the "Hold button to turn on the lights only" feature like the newer ships. I saw the Enterprise-B in a store the other day, passed on it and the D though. I'm wanting the Bird-of-Prey and Disruptor a bit more.

And I don't think the Eaglemoss ships have started releasing yet.

Sadly it still doesn't have it. Just upgraded paint and light in nacelle strips.

There are more hull types in rhe micro machines line. The difference is that the micromachines line has norhing after the enterprisese e and neghvar which are super rare and also includes things like shuttle craft.
My wife has cousins in the u.k. I mightsubscribe and have them forward me the eagle moss stuff.

Riddick 03-06-2013 11:38 PM

Ordered the new Repainted Enterprise-E from Wal-Mart.com for 60 bucks. Had it shipped to store for free. Also got the Enterprise-B the other day, will take pics of it soon. Had to get it off Ebay for over 80 bucks shipping and all. Wal-Mart.com didn't have it.

I have to say it's a MUCH better painted ship this time around. Only thing I added was the windows, they look so much better painted as you can tell in the pics. It's much more accurate then the previous Art Asylum E and even more accurate now then my Model E that I have. Granted my Model's windows all light up and the engines stay lit but it doesn't have the changes that Nemesis added.

I do despise the giant logos on the struts under the ship but I'm scratching that off with a razor blade. The Aztec patterns aren't showing up as well in the picture but trust me, the patterns look fantastic!

Those are painted prototypes. The production models are nowhere near that detailed. About on par with the Micro Machines, and maybe even a little sloppier.

The underlying aspect of the "Star Trek Economy" is that replicator technology means that nobody has to worry about "basic needs" (food, water, clothing, shelter, etc...). Because of this, "wealth" is no longer the objective measure of success for an individual, but rather how well you do your job and how much you "give back" to society. Dunno all the details but basically it sounds like after World War III and its' aftermath humanity realized that the pursuit of wealth was ultimately self-destructive. It may have continued if it weren't for the replicator technology solving some of the worlds' biggest problems.

There are inconsistencies where the idea of "money" is concerned, but quite frankly if humanity doesn't get over its' obsession with wealth somehow, we're pretty much doomed to kill ourselves off in the long run, or at the very least lock into an endless cycle of bloody revolution followed by another slow climb towards less than 1 percent of the population controlling 99 percent of the wealth, followed by another bloody revolution...wash, rinse, repeat.

Of course, it's also true that Star Trek writers have never fully explored this aspect of things and its' implications, but that's generally true of most fiction writers, particularly in the fantasy and sci-fi fields. Some do a better job than others, but there always seems to be something they dream up that a reader then later points out would be a "game breaker" (so to speak) if used in slightly different ways.

As for the whole "proletariat" thing...just like Star Wars, Star Trek is basically about the elite of the Federation. Presumably these people exist, but the story isn't really about them. I -think- we've seen a few one-off Star Trek enlisted guys on the security details and such, though.

I wish the Diamond ships were all to scale. You would figure it would be cheaper to make.

bmorr 03-13-2013 02:11 PM

speaking about scale, i was interested to see the bird of prey to enterprise comparison, so i dug this off Google. I'll make a larger version of this later.

In Generations they made the BOP look a lot bigger then it should have been.

no doubt.

Problem is that the BoP has been shown at different sizes. I don't know if it was intentional or not.

Going buy that chart the F-Toys Grissom is about in scale with the DST D and E, which I think should be correct. For some reason when you look it up the ship is supposed to have more decks than it could have possibly fit for that size. Sadly Star Trek just has scale issues with a lot of the minor ships. I'm guessing it wasn't in the budget to make everything work out well.

Shadowknight1 03-13-2013 05:54 PM

There are several classes of Klingon Bird-of-Prey. The one that faced down Kirk and company in The Search for Spock was a B'rel class. The ones commonly seen in The Next Generation and in Generations were K'vort class, generally bigger.

They've been fudging the BOP since before the movie came out. They originally were going to use Romulans in STIII but decided Klingons were more recognizable. But they kept the Romulan ship design.

Fasa had three different BOP designs, a scout, a frigate and a cruiser. It's never been ackknowledged as cannon but they do refer to the BOP as a scout and a battlecruiser as it suits them. they also use the names put out by fasa rhe B'rel and the K'vort.

Does anyone know what the differences are from the HD and regular Enterprise? Also is there a diffrence from the old refit and the new one coming out?
