I like that they change Walking Dead up from the comics, otherwise anyone could read ahead and know what will happen next. It's more fun for me to get the occasional surprise... plus if they went straight from the comics we wouldn.t have Darrell!

I didn't really like Halloween: Resurrection at all (mostly because of the hand held camera angles, and the fact that Busta Rhymes can box Michael with no problem) but I did like the way they explained Myers back to life. I remember thinking when I saw the previews that if they bring him back from a beheading it's gonna be stupid, but there explanation was decent. H20 was way better, But the best part of H20 was Joseph Gordon Levitt getting a skate in the face!

As someone who has never read a Walking Dead comic, I'll say that watching the show is a frustrating chore. Everyone I know thinks I'm nuts, they're totally brainwashed by the hype. But NOTHING HAPPENS throughout most of each season. The show has devolved to the point where the first two episodes of a new season are worth watching, as are the final two. Everything in-between is nothing but a lot of meandering where they make you THINK something interesting will happen, but it never does.

And then it turns out that the best moments of the show consistently end up being lifted straight from the pages of the comic, with a few changes here and there. So basically the writing staff has no talent whatsoever.

It's why I've latched onto Z Nation so quickly. Finally, another zombie show I can watch that isn't taken very seriously by anyone involved with the production. It's just cheesy and fun to watch. And you know what? Episode 2 featured a zombified dog, Resident Evil style. BOOM, already better than The Walking Dead!

And that is a bad thing? I hate Darrell. I find him to be overrated and he is only still there because girls for some reason are in love with a red neck.

I'll be watching Resurrection either tonight or tomorrow, but I'm not exactly looking forward to it. Still, at least it is better than Zombie's second movie.

That is how season one was, and when they fired Darabont from the show, I had a feeling it was going to stay that way.

You guys are right, TWD is boring throughout the season. Which is why these marathons suck even more (seriously AMC you only ever played one true marathon for Breaking Bad and that was when it was ending, the show that a lot of people now consider the best drama/best show ever, and it only got one marathon so far). I mean season 2 of TWD was literally just them on a farm, doing nothing, the zombies weren't even a backdrop for most of that season. Stupid feckin' farm. For me zombies aren't really horror anymore, they can be horror-action or horror-comedy but the actual scary original Night of the Living Dead zombies are gone it seems. 28 Days Later did them right, but that was 2002 and then [Rec] did zombies awesomely but that was 2007. Ever since then the zombie movie has been action or comedy with a horror theme. Not that I don't like any of those (I love Shaun of the Dead) but the horror's gone and sometimes I miss it.

Rant's over. Question time, does anybody here think horror can work via comics? I haven't read any comic that was ever scary, some are really messed up and dark/creepy, but I find it fairly hard to scare through this medium. With novels it works because as you read the details and have the mood set, that's suspense building. Granted, the jump scare (a favorite of paranormal movies) doesn't work in books, the more drawn out "makes you think" scare works well enough in the script. I suppose in any medium that isn't real-time you have to choose terror over horror. For those who have never heard of this: terror vs horror is the breakdown of any horror material that is based on the antagonistic value. A constant and physical threat (let's say Jason from Friday the 13th or Freddy Krueger) is a horror themed story, whereas a more anticipated or rarely seen threat playing more on the psych (more like The Thing, most of the eeriness of the film is the constant worry of who the thing has become) is a terror themed story.

Totally agree with you. I watch it when I can, but no longer is it "must watch" tv. I missed the last two episodes from last season but I know nothing happened and most of them have been kidnapped by cannibals or something like that.

I have been watching Z Nation myself. It's a good show. Though I kind of feel like it is like Sharknado, in the sense that is it campy/cheesy but still fun to watch.

kylactus 10-07-2014 03:27 PM

to defend TWD, they need to have slow episodes to build momentum. plus in all the good episodes a main character dies. So if they made every episode worth watching the group would last for half a season. also, I like Darrell, He's the kind of person I think would really make it in that situation.

Horror in comics.... most of the first comics were classified "horror" (tales from the crypt and the like) even journey into mystery and tales of suspense were anthologies that contained horror stories. hell Groot's first appearance was as an "alien attacker" in a horror story. Tomb of Dracula had a pretty good run back in the day. The problem is that everything gets stale so fast that any regular villain is going to get played out within a few years max. The public shifted from Vampires a few years ago to zombies and I'm sure the next "it" thing to have a resurgence is right around the corner. You also need to take into account what kids are exposed to now days. scary videogames, horror movies on the computer and Netflix and network TV even having Horror based series like Sleepy Hollow. I think the days of sitting under the sheets with a flashlight reading slasher comics and peeing your underoos are over.

I'm pretty sure the very first comics were adventure stories, funnies, and the occasional noir detective story. Horror in comics wasn't until the fifties as a popular idea and died down until the '70s brought it back again.

I have to respectfully disagree. Yeah, you can have slow episodes... but the content doesn't have to be total garbage. An example of a good filler episode would be the one from this past season when the group was split up, where Rick was alone in the house with the Sons of Anarchy rejects. That was a very well done episode, and VERY tense. It was even extremely well shot.

What wasn't a good episode was the one where Daryl and Beth sat around in an old shack drinking moonshine, while Beth droned on and Daryl moped around until he had a sudden burst of anger. Then they burned the shack down.

Episodes like the first example are few and far between. The only other episodes like it from throughout the show, and that are memorable enough for me to recall, are "Clear" and "18 Miles out". So, basically one per season.

The majority of the episodes are like example two. Episodes like the one where Carl wandered around on his own, ate some pudding, and lost a shoe. We're supposed to think of episodes like that as "characters development" shows, but just featuring certain characters doesn't develop them or flesh them out. It wastes time.

I know the reason why the majority of the episodes have to be that way. The AMC executives are a bunch of tightwad ***holes who won't give the show the kind of budget it needs. That's why the zombie count is so low and the action is so rare. It's way most episodes last season only utilized 2 or 3 of the main cast per episode. Knowing that fact doesn't make the show any more enjoyable for me, though.

I like Daryl. He's the most likable character on the show... but only because he hasn't gotten any major focus. He hangs around in the background and does something cool once in a while. The moment they decide to tell us who he is, I guarantee you that I won't like him anymore. Once they have him start making decisions, which have to be STUPID ones for the sake of the plot, then he'll just be as stupid as any other character.

But now I'm ranting again. Sorry. It just boggles my mind that other shows I LOVE get canceled so quick, while something like The Walking Dead gets renewed for a sixth season before the fifth one even airs.

Actually, it wasn't that horror comics died in the 50s due to unpopularity, it was due to assnine idiots forcing ratings on comics that made it illegal for comics to be violent at the time.

I said died down, like a drop in regular publishing and sales, not died like fell off the map and into oblivion. Feckin' Comics Code Authority.

.

Daryl's character has been pretty well defined, (especially in the "shack" episode) he was a nobody, had nothing going on. stoner red neck trailer trash. in the real world we see people like that all the time and usually think very little of them. I think that's kind of the point of his character. and honestly if they didn't do that episode I wouldn't have even noticed Maggie's sister disappearing. she's been more of a plot device (a place to put the baby wile everyone else is doing something) I think she needed a little face time to make her disappearance meaningful. And the groupings of characters last season was meant to show the disconnect of the group and the sense of isolation felt by the individuals, and to give a feeling of hopelessness.
That said I do agree that a show like Walking dead would be better on HBO or Showtime, production budget wise. plus I feel a bit more swearing would be used in a zombie apocalypse than AMC will allow. the down side is HBO would turn it into soft-core porn. A well written show doesn't need a big budget, fancy sets or a lot of special effects. look at the Twilight Zone, most episodes have a cast of one to six people and takes place in one room. all just smart Dialogue.

I know if there was zombies roaming around I'd be swearing like it was an effective weapon against them. In the comics and especially in the TellTale game season 1 they swear in what seems like an appropriate amount for the situation. POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE WALKING DEAD Plus the show has hinted at bringing Negan in as the new main villain, I didn't read all the way to Negan but I know what he did and that every other word out of his mouth is "fuck" so how is AMC gonna change that for the show? END OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Poison Shadow 10-07-2014 08:28 PM

I'm kind of glad Beth didn't get more screentime. Ideally she wouldn't be coming back at all. I liked her before "the epic quest for booze" with Daryl and their country club exploits. They made her annoying real quick, which brings me back to my point when I said characters become unlikeable the more they get featured.

My comments about the budget were only in reference to the average zombie count, makeup and the overall quality of their practical effects. I forget which episode it was, but there was a point where Maggie stabbed a Walker in the eye through the prison fence and it was just so painfully clear that it was half of a puppet held up on a rod. I'm sure time constraints factor into it too, and there's nothing that can be done about that... but things like that get noticed here and there, and it takes you out of whatever is going on. Still, at least they're using practical effects rather than overusing CGI.

The show has its moments. Barnageddon, the Governor's second assault on the prison... they're just few and far between. The quality of the show would greatly benefit from a reduced episode count, maybe even back down to the original six of the first season. At this point that'll never happen.

I don't think more cursing would make that much of a difference, aside from a few lines packing the proper punch. It definitely wouldn't be worth the tradeoff of having pointless, utterly gratuitous sex scenes, like you said. I can't stand to watch that Game of Thrones crap that people incessantly tell me I NEED to watch. Tried it. Hated it. I'm tired of people around me bothering me about it.

But that's just me. I'm more of an Army of Darkness, Z Nation, Sleepy Hollow kind of guy anyway. Nothing taken too seriously, everything done with a smirk or played for a laugh. That's what I find entertaining.

I do like the Walking Dead toys, though.

redx24 10-07-2014 09:14 PM

I would kill for a sleepy hollow headless horseman. Its something I've contemplated customizing in Joe scale but can figure out how to get the "redcoat" look.

Dr Kain 10-07-2014 10:08 PM

Halloween Resurrection - Oh god, why, why, WHY?! What were they thinking when they made this piece of crap? Okay, to be fair, there are some great moments to the movie. Despite how much bull**** it was to retcon the ending to H20, the opening bit of the movie is pretty good. Also, there are a few good lines of dialog to be found and some of the deaths are cool. In concept, it had an interesting idea by taking advantage of the hype of reality TV at the time it was made. Unfortunately, the movie is just bad ideas mixed with lazy writing all around. Michael's knife can chop a person's head off but not slice someone's leg off? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. The acting is bad, with some of the worst being from the blonde headed girl from Occulus (which explains a lot of why she was bad there) and most of all, Busta Rhymes. There are some moments I do think he had that were funny, but then I remember this is supposed to be a Halloween movie and not a parody one. In fact, they should have just went with making this a parody movie that featured Michael Myers in it, it would have been way better. Anyway, I've wasted enough text on this dump so I am going to give it a 2/10 stars. I am curious to watch it again with the commentary track though so I can learn what these people were thinking.

While more adult language wouldn't actually benefit the story in anyway, it would add a sense of realism to the situations for characters to use profanity.
Defense mode: I enjoy GoT, the plot, characters, and action work well for me. Having said that, I do think the sex is way way way overused and overdone. I'm not entirely against the idea of showing sex scenes, but when most of them have nothing to do with any actual character developments or plots, let's get back to guts and gore. Medieval House of Cards and ultra violence combo well in my view, throwing in soft porn however does not. Not every show on HBO uses explicit sex for the sake of sex either guys, True Detective actually made it into a plot device.

Just pulled these out of a box after having just moved recently. NOW it's finally starting to feel like Halloween for me. The perfect thing to watch a half an hour before you go to bed!

I really do need to get around to picking up the later seasons, but the first four were definitely the best of the bunch.

Nice! I want that set. Are those blu-ray? If not, does anybody know if they made those in blu-ray?

kylactus 10-08-2014 06:36 AM

I've got the first seven seasons of Tales from the Crypt on DVD, I've never seen them on Blu-ray. I'm not sure if Blu-ray would even add anything to it. for me the 80's/ 90's slight soft blur o-vision look is part of the feel of the show. That was a great show, it's amazing to go back and see all the huge actors that got to do episodes. did anyone ever make a Crypt Keeper figure? That's one character that would be a great retro Mego style figure.

Every October I watch as many Tales from the Crypt episodes as I can and wherever I end is where I continue the following October. I finished through S6 last year, so this year I've started with S7 and am working through that before I go back to S1. Honestly, S7 is not that great. There are some really good episodes in the season, but overall, it is pretty lackluster. Season 5 has some of my favorite episodes on it such as "Came the Dawn" and "Creep Course."

Poison Shadow 10-08-2014 08:39 AM

Oh boy. Now I'm gonna have to watch my Tales From the Crypt dvds again. Only have 1-6, so maybe it's time to track down the seventh.

That was such a great show. Crazy list of guest stars and directors, too.

Oh yeah. Hell, one of the episodes I watched last night had Daniel Craig in it. It is funny that I did not realize how far back I knew that guy before he became Bond. I thought Tomb Raider was the earliest I had seen him in, but nope, when S7 came out on DVD several years ago I discovered it was TFtC that I first knew him from.

I used to think it was a shame the series only went on for seven seasons, but now, I think it went on just long enough. No series should be more than 7-10 seasons.

Byrnes 10-08-2014 09:48 AM

I'm not a big horror movie fan in general but these movies are fun to watch over and over.

Return of the Living Dead 1985 (Great soundtrack)
Scream (I don't know I just like it even though it's goofy)
Hellraiser (classic to me)
Nightbreed
