I agree (to an extent) it's disappointing. Indeed the sequel itself features, an epically massive array, of toy / model vehicles...

Trying to generate excitement over potentially new 1:18 products based on the movie in hopes that Mattel would see that there is a market to support that endeavor is admirable. Sadly, the excitement probably wasn't high enough to generate much action in their part.

We should amplify hype over the things we did get and not wallow too much in things we didn't.

Super Joe 02-25-2020 10:04 AM

I hear ya Geo. Wouldn't hurt to ask Mattel to put just a little more effort though. Perhaps you can ask as a shareholder tlasjr?

Realistically? They might be a little cautious about the movie's chances. I said this before when I was talking about why the comparisons to Jurassic Park didn't really work for me, but this isn't really a franchise I expect to bust out in a huge way, especially with kids.

All in all, I think a company that makes more nostalgic products for the collector's market might have been a better fit. Get someone to make some retro Kenner style figs or something.

Agreed, Geo.

While I wasn’t expecting much here, there was potential given their return to the 3.75 inch scale.

Here's a Full Force vidcast (whom often plugs in the Hiss). Its a fun explaination from 2 respected members of the Joe community; on the virtues of a 3.75 inch toyline,

Nah, like I said, I can understand why some people were hopeful it would happen. What I said was the issue was the realistic managing of expectations. People massively jumped the gun on this one and convinced themselves of stuff they ended up getting disappointed by.

Sorry, that should have been If I'm.a shareholder.
Even if I was they have other parties asking bigger questions.

Thanks for the article.

Mattel gifted Paramount a "repackaged" toy, sitting for 10 years.
Comparable to this candle, sitting for a year?

Military PX stores, got these carriers of similar size (even bigger) with more diecast planes. Lakeshore Educational stores likewise sells these toys. Walmarts offer a similar toy yet with more lights and sounds.

Mattel just didn't "repack" toys for Jurassic World. So why the huge global license for such a miniscule offering versus others?

Mattel can offer greater toys - like it made better toys versus Hasbro - when it got the Jurassic 3.75 inch license. As seen in this Sequel setting, Mattel has enough film material for vehicles; than G.I.Joe's glory days of the 80s. Offering 80s style toys for the 80s Top Gun franchise can make Mattel surpass Hasbro in a greater item count of equally cool toys...

No news or products shown?

I expect barbies, kens, 6 inch, true moves, hot wheels....

The movie drops in 4 months....and no real news for Mattel.

Super Joe 03-11-2020 01:16 PM

Retroblasting gave a very honest and very poignant retrospect on Mattel.
Then, mentions a 35 year old franchise, long "A.W.O.L." in toys.
Hmmmmm...

After watching the poignant Retroblasting video on Mattel (above) its a must to see these incredible = Maker-Made TOPGUN toys at Small Scale HQ

Probably because Jurassic Park is a much bigger deal than Top Gun.

Agreed. Top Gun just isn't remotely the kind of mega-success brand that would get a lot of sales toy-wise.

TOPGUN was 1986 when the USS Flagg + F-14s were still on toy shelves. According to those in the 80s mega-success brand GIJoe, one of thee highest toy-wise sales, started coincidently around 1986 (coincidently the same year as TOPGUN 1986). Its sometimes wondered if TOPGUN help propel Joe's toy sales. GIJoe (Scoop) eventually gave a shout out to TOPGUN back in the 80s as seen herein,

Yeah, but... Those weren't Top Gun™ toys, even if they were in line with the stuff in the movie. Top Gun hasn't really been known as a toy-heavy brand before, or even a very Big Brand™ like something like Jurassic Park or Star Wars. It was just a successful movie one-off.

Plus, GI Joe didn't start in 1986. Even if we're going by specifically the start of the 3 3/4" line, it started in 1982.

Thor Laserpunch 03-17-2020 07:19 AM

This whole thread is some pie in the sky ridiculous wishful shit.

1982 was certainly the start. Yet 1986 was when Joe toys really began to see a very high profitable peak. Btuckheimer likewise equated it to Star Wars yet within the skies.

Super Joe 03-19-2020 05:37 AM

A year after the 1986 film, another apparent homage, an action figure called Maverick arrived in toy shelves 1987.

Whole sequel (was) a pie in the sky. Tom Cruise, lead actor, was fired by Paramount for years (2006). Chris McQuarrie, lead writer, hadn't released a film for most of that same decade. Yet someone said - "we're 3 years away" (2008) from TOPGUN's 25th Anniversary (2011). Those 3 years were so important, as its how long it takes, to do a big film (sequel). Someone said something of a sequel (back in 2008) yet that's another story. That's thee exact year Paramount coincidently (re)hired Tom Cruise (2008).

Shortly thereafter, Hasbro put a little of its own G.I.Joe (2009) Paramount film profit - in something special. A new (2010) production of the big Skystriker F-14 toy jet. After 3 years (2008 to 2011) Hasbro finally debuted a new F-14 toy with - - - wait for it - - - thee TOPGUN Anthem at Joe Con (2011). Unbeknownst to many, Hasbro had a sweet ingredient prepared for a "pie in the sky" TOPGUN 3.75 toyline; exactly when talks of a sequel just began to warm. Hence if Hasbro can do a big TOPGUN style 3.75 toy, with just a "pie in the sky" scent of a rumor. Then surely Mattel's positively capable of doing the same; in a now really "real" major sequel.
