i just watched a video with the guy that owns Mile High Comics and the question of Insurance came up- he said that only the cover price of any given issue could be considered for insurance purposes- (i imagine high value books with proof of amount paid- like the Amazing Fantasy #15 sort of books get special consideration) but if that's a standard for collectibles I bet $20 per figure is going to be a good starting point... great question.... i would talk with my Home Owners Insurance people, find out how they value collectibles- then get back here and let us know.

When determining how much insurance you should buy I thought it was what it would cost to replace whatever item. Like if you had a Hot Toys figure collection you wanted to insure, you would add up how much it would cost you to replace each figure in your collection. Some figures go for a lot more than their original retail price on the secondary market, so that should be taken into account when you tally up what your collection is worth. I would definitely start at retail price for every piece though.

Customs would be difficult to Value as they are not in Original Factory conditions. We know that once a figure is OOB it's value decreases, much the way a car does when it leaves the Lot. That said Figures can and do get dusty in MIB condition (I've seen it). In truth Anybody's guess.

Repost: Just need a few more opinions. Thanx.
What do you guys think my Collection would be Valued as a whole including Customs for Insurance Purposes. In all seriousness I need your Opinion.

A few years ago, when we bought our new house, I talked to my agent about insuring my collection. I don't remember the exact lingo, but it boiled down to a max of 50% of MSRP if opened, if the figures were in like new condition. For unopened, they recommend getting an actual appraisal, if you want to get market value. Otherwise, 100% MSRP.

CMIII 12-27-2016 04:07 PM

for the standard figures as they are (non Customs) I'd say 50% less the value of Mint in Sealed Box.. Customs worthless (Please understand I do not mean this to sound harsh) you took the figure as it was, painted it, changed the head, redid the body, and otherwise destroyed the original figure. It has no value anymore.

Ah correction , you know how to paint it, you know how to change the head, you know to redo the body. You created a new piece of art. You're right that figure has lost its original pricing but your paying for an artist's time and skill which makes a custom figure worth more, varying on the skill , detail and paint apps, the artist is using figures as a base to make their dream figure or a client's one.
e.g kenm2474s batman figure with the dirt bike is a figure you might not get from a Normal DC collectibles figure unless they made it from the movie about that storyline i.e the dark knight returns armour was seen in Batman V superman so they made a classic and movie version. That's another reason they cost more they are 1 of a kind, unless the customiser makes molds etc.

But, for insurance purposes, which is what was asked, what is the value of a custom? Not sure how insurance companies apply value to art, unless it is an original Van Gogh or something. Some guy on Ebay slapping some acrylic on a $20 figure doesn't seem to fall into the same category. I'd say at best, it would be the same value as an opened figure, which is, if in near mint condition, 50% MSRP.

I fully understand what you are saying. Mint condition means "As it came from the Manufacturer." If we scale action figures as we do Comic Books and Baseball Cards, unless you used a Blank tester buck (They are regularly sold on EBay) Mint in box - 10 to Open and Played with by child 1 (or less) Customs fall at about 1. Please understand that I am not trying to besmerch anyone's work or efforts. Customs are simply for your own value.

Can you link to the JLA stuff? I can't find anything...

Also, I could be wrong, but I think Mattel is saving most of their DC stuff for tomorrow, probably after a panel.
