To be fair, that is not exactly how it went with Wolverine. He started out a marginally popular character but around the time Byrne and Miller were doing their interpretations of him he quickly grew in popularity which had nothing to do with "bandwagons" or any of that. It was based on the genuine writing ability of the people writing the stories featuring him and their ability to both give him a strong voice and also put him into circumstances that would showcase the more favorable attributes of the character.

This popularity amongst serious collectors is what prompted his explosion into the mainstream around the late 80s and early 90s (in other words, when "all the sixteen year olds love" him) which is what led to Marvel throwing him into everything. Which led to him being written by a ton of writers of various levels of talent, which led to people thinking that he's a worthless character. Which is kind of irrational, given that the value of any character is *solely* in how they're written. Which would indicate that it's the writer who is good or bad, not the character.
