Also, what is missing here is the simple fact that for the vast, unwashed masses of braindead zombies that currently represent the human race, their idea of a dinosaur is a slow moving tub of lard covered in scales. Computer technology doubles every generation, so why can't human understanding of paleozoology? Crichton gets a pass from me, as far as the book goes, because the book does talk about dinosaur turning into birds, and as far as when the book was written, Velociraptor was not known to have feathers (that discovery wasn't until 2005 I believe). Crichton never said his book was about dinosaurs. It was about human greed, responsibility and the exploiting of science... The dinosaurs were there as a tool to "prove a point". Spielberg, however, doesn't get a pass from me, because when JP was being hyped, Spielberg and his machine were going around talking about the marvel that is their dinosaurs, how technologically advanced, as well as scientifically accurate to the latest in paleontological studies. He bragged about Jack Horner as a consultant, even though none of Jack Horner's work appears in the film (Horner is a strong proponent of T-Rex being a scavenger only, and his primary contributions to paleontology is hadrosaur and ceratopsian studies). Can't blame the book, either, since 99% of the movie was never in the book it's based on. Spielberg took the wealth of information, and tossed it down the toilet, and instead gave audiences movie monsters instead of animals. He put a frill on the Dilophosaur for ZERO reason. It's a fascinating animal just the way nature presents it. Now you have non-JP related videos and merchandise putting frills on the dilophosaur because of Speilberg's whim. Every movie out there now, from Avatar to King Kong, uses the donkey bray/porpoise whistle for a dinosaur sound. At least when he butchered the science of sharks with Jaws, he gave us an intriguing and compelling human drama, that stands the test of time even if the shark looks like a rubber fish, the characters are so compelling they keep audiences watching 30+ years later. With JP, the humans were so poorly written that most people I know, when the bluray of the JP films came out, they watched the dinoscenes and skipped past all the humans. You can't care about any of the characters. The only one who ALMOST has personality is Ian Malcolm, in the first one, but even he is dumbed down and butchered by the 2nd film into being just another action hero. I think a reboot of Jurassic Park would be awesome, and well received. The original has it's themeparks, had it's moment as a happy meal toy, and makes Universal/NBC millions every year when they show it on TV. Let a new generation of film makers, artists, and paleontologists take it where it needs to go in the new millennium, and leave Gerty the Dinosaur back in the swamp where she belongs. |
Man I love Dinosaurs forever still have my original dino fact book, but arguig over things we still don't really know about is crazy.
No one really knows anything 100% about extinct animals regardless of how many conclusions scientist come up with they can never prove them until we can go back in time and have a living sample to study. It's like the Cope Marsh all over again. I am glad we are going to see more than just the raptors and t-rex in the line, these are 2 good dinos to add some variety to the basic "popular" mix. Would be neat to get some of those older random dinosaurs they made or the mammals they made a couple of with the capture gear line. Honestly forgot what line of JP those weirder dinos were from, maybe we will get new Playskool JP Junior toys, it's funny too that the Heroes lines have now went back to being Playskool again since those toys were pre-heroes. |

I also feel someone should stand up for the creationist point if viee. Dinos have been arpund 6000 years same as everything else and did not evolve into anything.

I always thought they said it was 4,000 years.
These look nice, ballsy going at that dinosaur with a bow, ha At least thy have normal looking guns not big huge silly ones. I would have to either turn them side ways or putty up the dino damage hole. So these 2 sets are 29.99 a piece? |

And on that note: Let's get this thread back on topic, please. If anyone wants to continue debating the movies themselves, the original books or paleontology in general, there are other forums and threads for it. |
Ouch. I love the look of the Allosaurus but 29.99 seems a tad steep to me.
|
The iguana spikes on the Allosaurus are directly ripped off of Papo's figure. There is no evidence of any such spikes in Allosaurus's skeleton. Papo invented them for stylistic purposes. Now Hasbro has ripped them off. It hardly matters to me, because... you know, big deal? And I can shave them off either way.
This Allosaurus toy looks great, and while $29.99 is too much, I may buy it anyway. But I'm limiting myself to specific dinosaurs. Next, I hope they make a raptor, and a T-rex. I hope the T-rex is significantly larger than the Allosaurus (which is already inaccurately small compared to the human figure. |
Actually, the scales on the Allosaur are probably accurate, since a VERY closely related animal in China (which had been classified AS Allosaurus fragilis until 2008) left skin indentions which also included scutes along the flank and shoulders. Scutes in dinosaurs is definitely not unheard of.
As for the size scale, the average Allosaur skeleton is typically estimated to be 23 to 28 feet long. Only two individual finds ever surpassed 35 feet in estimated length. Assuming the human figure is a typical western male height of 5'9 to 5'11, that puts the Allosaur near 25 ft long, which is acceptable. Figure the below skeleton's size. Assuming the barrier is typical-height (at or below the belt line of a 5' 9 man) the scale fits fine. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...urus_SDNHM.jpg |

Btw, knowing the average size of an Allosaurus just makes Papo's figure that much cooler, since it's almost the perfect size compared to GI Joes. I mean cooler than I previously perceived it; not cooler than Hasbro's new toy. |

Want. Want. Want.

It worked for Turok. Anyway, these toys look expensive but maybe their quality will be top notch. I'd buy one if it were clearanced out at a decent price, but only to give as a gift down the road. These will make great toys that will actually get played with by kids. That's pretty rare these days.
