These people are all running on fumes.

That's a hard but very good summary. The Hollywood industrial complex seems to be following the trail blazed by covered wagons and Blockbuster Video.

Dr Kain 01-06-2022 10:44 PM

Why does it seem like every time WB reboots Batman, it looks less and less like a comic book?

MrMultiverseMan 01-07-2022 03:27 AM

Come on guys, stop bashing at McFarlane on this one!

I understand that sometimes they can cut corners but I still think they are an upper class to marvel legends which in my opinion are just cheap looking kids toys.

I know we are never going to know what they actually cost to make but tbf at least they are making figures off the movies unlike what DC Collectibles/Direct barely did.

McFarlane's Multiverse line is a huge step up from the original Mattel line IMO as they always felt like a cheaper version of the DC Collectibles line.

Keep em coming Todd!!

DarkEyes 01-07-2022 04:55 AM

This is , officially, THE WORSE figure in the McFarlane DC Multiverse line.

Ironically, just for that should have a place in my collection but just with a HIGH discount.

Sorry, but I consider character selection an important aspect of a line and Todd has failed immensely in that area. Not to mention making people buy two figures for an unmasked head rather than just putting the alternate head in the package is a dirty tactic. And then the lack of proper weapons is another. If the character's main arsenal are guns, the figures should include guns. Like all three of their new Jokers do not include a single gun. How the fuck are you going to do a Killing Joke Joker and not include his signature pistol that he used to shoot Barbara with????? Lastly, has he done ANY classic designs for characters beyond Superman, Batman, and Joker? Every figure I've seen seems to encompass a more modern look. Look at Etrigan. I would want him in his red outfit with the blue cape, not having him wear a suit of armor.

Mattel may have messed up a lot of aspects, and their figures are horribly outdated, but at least they gave us classic designs.

BTW, Marvel Legends runs circles around DC Multiverse.

Blame the missing guns on WB, I don't know why they pretend it will solve violence in the real world...

Thatannoyingguy 01-07-2022 07:14 AM

This figure looks better at different angles. Cool that he can ride on a motorcycle.

"Classic" looks are on their way as the company delves deeper into DC history. This line started only in 2020.

Also, not all "classic" looks are desirable. I have zero interest in disco or mullet Nightwing.

IzzyTipsy 01-07-2022 07:44 AM

At least that motorcycle looks cool enough to get and use for other figures.

Hobo Bruce looks like he really should be Hobo Dick, though.

deecee4 01-07-2022 08:04 AM

Wow, I assumed that this was going to be a set. The figure is going to peg warm so hard lol.

BarbaraGordon 01-07-2022 08:04 AM

By the way, Drifter and Drifter Unmasked (Target Exclusive) are two separate figures.

They're only doing it to cover their own butt, it's a precaution they're taking for when the next idiot trying to make a name for themselves declares plastic men with guns are the next violent video game or scary comic book...

Is it though? Or is that just speculation? Has DC ever outright stated this? I've never heard of a comic company sabotaging their own product before by having some dumb rule. If they don't want the toys to have guns, they shouldn't have them in the comics either then. Marvel doesn't have this problem.

It started in 2020 and yet, how many Batmans have we had in that time frame? People proclaimed that MacFarlane was only doing a few Batmans per wave to kick off the line, but here we are like 20 waves later and it's still a 5:1 ratio for Batman stuff.

It depends on what they are going for. If I'm collecting the New Teen Titans, I most definitely want a disco Nightwing since that is the costume he wore in that era.

Where did they say this though?

If WB is so worried about guns, why would they continue to make crime movies and even give Batman guns in the movies?

Yes, because Batman sells, especially to people unfamiliar with comics (such as parents who just want to grab something for their kids). It's gotten to the point where DC canceled a bunch of titles and launched several new Batman or Batman-adjacent publications.

Meanwhile, people on the Internet have reported seeing as many as 36 King Shazam figures sitting on shelves inside Target or Walmart stores.

Well, you collect what you want to collect, and everyone else will collect what they want. Again, "classic" isn't always desirable. Riddler has worn costumes with question marks all over his body. I would never buy a figure or statue based on those.

I'm just inferring there, but the difference to me is that movies (more specifically superhero movies) have shed the stigma of being kiddie entertainment, while toys, try as we might, are still seen as kid junk by a loooot of people, especially out of touch folks who'd rather blame society's ills on a singular boogieman than realize it's a multi-faceted problem :p Just my two cents though!

QuikMix 01-07-2022 09:49 AM

I'd maybe buy it for the bike, but I'd bin the figure.

emeraldnite 01-07-2022 10:08 AM

The only way I'd consider getting the bike is if the motorcycle helmet was hollow and could be put on other figures.

One man's evil doesn't make you good. The line in general has a lot going for it. But when they can't keep up a standard consistency in their line or match the competition, then they get respectfully bashed.

They are putting out a product to sell. Customizers can do whatever they want. Something being sold to the masses is a different story.

You put out a subpar product, you put out a subpar product.
You use anticonsumer tactics, you are using anticonsumer tactics.

Mcfarlane can just do better.

------------------
As to the ban on guns with DC toys. No the WB has not put out a statement. But for some reason everyone who has a DC toy license isn't adding guns. I think it was a Mafex employee who did say the WB told them to nix the guns from one of the figures. It was either a twitter or IG post.

It's not like Mcfarlane has a no gun policy when the recent Spawn figures seem over equipped with firearm(and not laser guns).

----------

As to Batman realism. At this point Batman and dipped into various genres. Clearly gritty crime drama has won out. I would love if they dipped into Magic or Sci Fi with Batman. But I figure the idea there is that's why you have Supergirl and Wonder Woman for that.

-------
I still think the head sculpt for this Bruce figure looks very weak. Part of it is the hair. I don't know why the sculpt the hair like it's made of heavy clay.

Also how awesome would it be if this figure had a great ab crunch, so he could actually ride the bike like a normal person?

I appreciate the seamless look but until they get a very thin, strong, flexible plastic, split the part up so their can be articulation.

Exile8782 01-07-2022 02:45 PM

I just cant get past the side eyed looks. I get it on 1 or 2 releases, but im seeing it on way to many Mcfarlane toys. It totally ruins it for most figures...

Actually may work as decent generic thug bases.

That's actually a great idea, get five or six of these to fight Battinson! :D

GizmoTron 01-07-2022 04:15 PM

Not the best figure in the world, but it gives me a lot of Year One vibes and that's a good thing.

It gives emo kid who got swirlied in highschool vibes. Its like they just matted down ed from twilights hair and said okay this is the new batman look. At this point im ready to say screw batman and give us a Batwing movie….at least then it wouldnt be another retconning batman beginnings movie.

But Batman isn't selling, at least in my area. My stores have been clogged with multiple Batman figures just collecting dust.

Another issue is how bad some of the figures are proportionately. Like my stores have a Flash figure that looks like he is Bane wearing a Flash costume due to how large his muscles are. Flash is not supposed to look like he is 400 pounds of muscle.

I don't know what King Shazam is, but my Walmarts have like 10 Joker looking Robins on their pegs along with a few Batmans and Supermans.

Other pegwarmers include Batgirl, the first Joker they did, helmetless Shriek, helmetless Peacemaker, Hawk Girl Wonder Woman cosplay, Wonder Woman 84, Blight, a really grundgy looking Superman, and JLU Flash.

Fair enough, but honestly, I'm speaking for myself, not others.

Which is funny because any time I'm at a store and a parent is with their kid looking at a Legend or MacFarlane figure I often hear, "That toy is too expensive, go with one that is cheaper."
