During the Dark Reign, remember the story-arc with War Machine facing off against Iron Patriot? Seeing the movie-verse interpretation of Hammer, I wouldn't be surprised if we're gearing up to have Hammer replacing Norman Osborn's role in those stories. Heck... H.A.M.M.E.R. It makes sense. Hammer stole tech before, so he might steel the new Rhodey armor for his own purposes to make his company look appealing again.

Two, the armor can be repainted. As others have pointed out, just because it didn't happen in the comics doesn't mean it can't happen in the films. And just because it happened in the comics, doesn't mean it will happen in the movie-verse.

Three, Detroit Steel was built by Hammer Industries in the comics. In the movie-verse, the modifications made to the MK II to create War Machine were done by Hammer. So it stands to reason that the movie version of Detroit Steel would look very similar to the movie-verse War Machine.

Also, Hammer would have had plenty of time to study Tony's tech while they were modifying it for the Air Force. What if Hammer created a copy of the MKII and made the modifications on it, gave it to Rhodey, but kept the original MKII? That way he'd still have a Stark suit to use as a template for Detroit Steel or the like.

Oh and the movie version of Whiplash was a mash-up of the comic versions of Whiplash and the Crimson Dynamo. Given that, I would not at all be surprised if IM3 decides to mash-up Detroit Steel and Iron Patriot in a similar fashion.

War Machine might be getting the star spangled armor in the comics when the movie hits theaters.

Editorial when asked about that pic and if it'd be in the comics made a remark like "could be, wait and see."

I believe this. Its already been confirmed that Captain America is getting a new costume after AvX and will be joining Wolverine on the, wait for it..."Uncanny Avengers". No joke.

That's actually not a bad idea if they move the New Avengers cast to that, and prep "new avengers" for avengers academy graduates. Probably led by spider-man to coincide with ultimate spider-man season 2 or 3. They already have white tiger from AA, powerman from NA, and Ironfist from NA. So it'd make sense to expand the cast moreso for wider exposure after fans get used to them as characters.

And I'd be perfectly fine with that. It makes sense from a marketing and business standpoint, much like you said regarding the upcoming changes to New Avengers. To me it seems that Marvel is treating the movie-verse as just another of their standard comic universes within the Marvel multiverse.

I'd prefer that over the completely isolated nature of the recent DC films any day. I've always been a fan of continuity, especially when it's planned out over a long period of time and is intricately build and crafted (where even seemingly insignificant details become huge plot points later on when more information is revealed).

Such a dark tone to this one. It's interesting to see how affected Tony was from the outcome of Avengers. It looks really good. I wonder if they will do a fourth movie considering there are still at least 2 more Avengers to go.

D00MTR0N 10-23-2012 06:20 AM

the best movie line marvel has put out, cant wait, but does anyone have a clue if iron patriot is good or bad in this?

trebleshot 10-24-2012 05:26 AM

I'm going to guess he's a bad guy in this. There were a couple of scenes just in the trailer that make me think that. Also I think it's probably Justin Hammer under the armor; he did work very closely with Rhodey's prototype to create the War Machine armor. Between Vanko's work and the WM project, he could have easily replicated all of the tech and built a new suit after the Air Force dropped him like a bad habit.

MegaPrime33 10-24-2012 05:30 AM

But how could it be the Iron Patriot? It says Lt. Col. James Rhodes stamped on the armor. Unless somehow someone ends up stealing the armor, I don't see how it could be a bad guy. Of course I could also be completely wrong too.

trebleshot 10-24-2012 06:42 AM

I'm going to assume that anyone reading this thread is not worried about spoilers. Good? Alright, moving on.

Well, I doubt anyone in the movie will refer to it officially as "Iron Patriot" - just like the way Rhodey's armor was never referred to officially as "War Machine" in IM2.

Most likely, after the events of IM2 and Avengers, the WM suit was given a new paint job and used as a new form of propaganda and taken to air shows, press releases, etc. Basically the same kind of thing that Cap did in the 40's.

As an aside, I also think that Tony's nightmares and anxiety are what drive him to full-blown alcoholism. And if they are doing part of "Demon in a Bottle", I really hope we see a proper Silver Centurion at some point.

I definitely think someone will steal the armor from the Air Force and use it against Tony. Two scenes in the trailer point to this event:

1. IP hovering over a sleeping Pepper and Tony (could be a dream sequence though).
2. IP blowing up Tony's seaside home while Tony, in the MKII, scrambles to escape (again, could be a dream sequence).

And if anyone would steal the IP armor and use it against Tony, it would be Justin Hammer. But I could be way off-base about this too, especially since I'm still not sure how Mandarin figures into the plot.

the whole "demon in a bottle" idea would be neat to add to the plot, may feel a bit rushed, but it is a movie,on the iron patriot topic, who is the guy we see kissing pepper on the cheek and at the 33 second mark?could this guy be some new villain they are going to introduce and he could end up wearing the iron patriot armor?and they were helicopters blowing up tony and peppers home, not the iron patriot.

Black Dynomite 10-24-2012 09:36 AM

Am I the only person feeling like this may even top the Avengers? I could be very wrong. But honestly, I had almost the same feeling (mouth open, derp face) watching this 1st trailer that I had watching the Avengers at the midnite release. Marvel is dope. The Law of the Land says that they MUST produce a crappy movie one day. I don't think it'll be this one like a lot of people have said.

Anyway, the things that jumped out to me from this trailer:

The Very Begining - Off the bat, I get that Marvel feel. They honestly have developed a certain "vibe" to thier movies. That comic book feel. I feel like I'm watching a comic book jump off the page and move around and tell the story for me. The view from the ground up, beautiful colors, nice scenery...you're wondering, "Somebody must've got knocked the Eff out". Then they show Iron Man, looking...Effed UP! Can somebody answer this for me? Does he take his mask off like it was on magnetically or something or did he just rip it off? I like how advanced his tech has progressed with each movie. Just like it should, based on what he has encountered as Tony Stark let alone Iron Man.

His Tech - I am not as well versed in my comic knowledge as you guys (as stated before), so I don't know 100% if that was intended to be Extremis but the armor parts flying onto his body was kinda dope. It made me think: Well, in The Avengers he had JARVIS deploy Mark VII and the parts bonded(?) with his body. Why wouldn't Tony Stark take it to the next level. Then really quick (you gotta pause it to get a good look) you see the entire suit disassembled next to his side of the bed? Eh, I could be wrong. Could just be a different suit on the floor. Anyway check out his room while you're at it. I can't even wrap my mind around the wall with the telescope and space. That was crazy.

Tone Of The Movie - When he says "Honestly, there's 100 people who want to kill me" that was the first time in this movie's franchise that I felt bad for Tony Stark. With every comic movie being these days being grounded in realism at points, after I walked out of the theater of Avengers I started thinking: What would these dudes be doing right after this? Who's life would change the most? I was thinking Cap. Hawkeye and BW will keep doing assasin stuff, Hulk would continue to Smash, get chased, then help the team and Thor will go do God stuff. I figured Tony would just keep doing the same stuff. Looking at this trailer, of course it's Tony. Tony Stark the billionaire-playboy-philanthropist has made himself such a target that Iron Man, after saving the entire world, can't even chill and enjoy a shwarma samich in peace without thinking about the next revenge hungry cat trying to end his life. Even the way he says it sounds like he's not even trippin'. The tone of the movie seems like, TO ME, they are trying to mix the grit and grime of TDK with the comic vibe of Avengers and, if that's the case, I'm loving that.

Pepper Getting Snatched Up - Probably the first time I've ever screamed WTF while watching a trailer for a comic book movie. The way the trailer was edited makes it seem like Tony is smart enough to know that him being with her puts a target on her back, head, and feet. It looks like he's telling her, as a man, that he's worrying about protecting her and BAM! She gets snatched up out of his bed with him laying next to her. Wow!

Other Tidbits - Manadrin's big NWA rings were dope. Lol, definately got that comic feel to them... There is a gang of Iron Men who don't like Tony or anybody else... Could somebody make out who the female is that was trying to punk Tony out right at the 1:00 mark?....Whoever has a hand in Marvel movies special effects should get a whole bunch of awards. They seem to make big explosions look right....This trailer makes you think Tony is really in more of a threat than they did in Avengers.... Was that his suit or someone he battled at the end?

Is Hammer even in this movie? Regardless, this movie is going to be bananas. And bananas is good.

The guy kissing Pepper is Aldrich Killian (played by Guy Pierce), one half of the duo who created Extremis. The other half, Maya Hansen, is also in the film. That might explain why Tony's on an operating table in one of the clips.

Although I'm worried that mixing plots from "Demon", "Extremis" and Mandarin might be a little too ambitious, especially with what happened with X3. Maybe they won't do "Demon" after all - or save it for IM 4.

See my response to MegaPrime33 below regarding a new theory I have on who is in the IP suit.

Oops. Yes, you're right. I was mixing up shots of Tony in the MKII during the collapse of the building with the rockets being fired at it. Speaking of, is it me, or did the helicopters have red and silver paint schemes?

According to IMDB, no he isn't. So I'm off there. But Jack Taggert is (played by Ashley Hamilton), and Taggert once wore an experimental suit based on Stark tech and sponsored by the US Military. He was dubbed "Firepower" and became an Iron Man villain. He also worked for Mandarin at one point.

But his suit looked nothing like WM or IM (the original was closer to Iron Monger). Even still, it isn't the first time they've blended the origins of villains in an IM movie.

Greenskar 10-24-2012 02:22 PM

Well if Marvel's current trend of trying to make their comics reflect the movieverse in some form or another is any indication it would seem that Rhodey is indeed the Iron Patriot. In the current comics Rhodey was presumed dead but it was a cover up between him and Tony to throw the Mandarin off his plan.

Rhodey is currently without an armor as of the end of Matt Fractions current run. Switch to Marvel Now and the secret avengers will soon have the Iron Patriot among there ranks with an as of yet unknown pilot. Seeing as how Rhodey was an original member of this team, and currently lacking armor, its a fair assumption he will most likely become the Iron Patriot in the comics given his military background and become the symbol the government wants from him. This also means fans of the Iron Man 3 movie looking to read about Iron Patriot in the comics, will be pleased to find jumping into Marvel Now, its the same character.

There's also the huge push in the upcoming Ultimates book that introduces the Ultimate Iron Patriot, who as of now is speculated to be President Cap (yeah Cap is POTUS in the Ultimate Universe currently).

Also the armor that appears sentient over Pepper and Tony in Bed is the new armor that's rumored to be Extremis related. My guess is that since its being controlled by Tony's thoughts that somehow he was subconsciously activating the armor in his sleep. Or Mandarin found a way to manipulate it with one of his rings using Tony's own thoughts against him (which is what happened in fractions recent run).

I never thought a trailer could be better than an entire movie, but somehow I felt this was better than Iron Man 2, lol.

I just REALLY hope that I haven't spoiled the movie for myself by watching that trailer. I like getting more footage, but I don't wanna be able to piece together everything from the movie.

trekking95 03-06-2013 07:45 PM

Oh yeah!!!! Can't wait for that movie!! :popcorn

That UK trailer was better than any movie trailer since the Avengers. It's so good I would pay $12.50 at the theater just to watch the 2 min. trailer!!!

And Tony Stark with the Repulsor on his one arm and an Uzi in the other was the coolest scene I have ever scene!! No kidding!! :D

If the spoiler tags worked I would have used them, but then everyone has seen the trailer by no so what is there to spoil?

oweng 04-25-2013 09:52 AM

Watched it already. 24th, Pacific time(Philippines). Not gonna spread some spoils, but the movie was great. Not Avengers great but might be able to top all the other MCU films(Thor, CA, Hulk, IM, IM2).

bman 04-27-2013 03:58 PM

I watched it too. No spoilers from me either but it was definitely better than IM2, I just wished that the Iron Patriot armor had more onscreen time.
