Well, to be honest, I'm not competing. So I don't really care what does or does not count against me.
In the "Thank you" example, it comes down to the new rules will *not* allow it without making some big post out of it. I tried to thank someone, and it came back "Your post is to short. It needs to be XX characters blah blah"

Oh I hadn't realized that was in affect lol. I guess most of my post are over 25 characters :p

I think what Crazy Jetty is worried about (and I'd have to agree) is that the posts will seem contrived. For example, I might normally put, "Sounds good, thanks man!" but then when I click "Post", it says it lacks the number of necessary characters, so I'll end up putting "Ah, I see, my good man. You are both a gentleman and a scholar. I applaud thee for fulfilling my request without the usual amount of imploring that would go into having such a request fulfilled. Gadzooks and gee willickers, were my delight measurable by rule, it would exceed the length of the Bifrost Bridge, it would, guvna!!! I tip my hat to you, paaardner!" in it's place.

I've always been very yakky ever since I signed up and it's not an overnight thing like it clearly has been for some of the folks I've seen here although to be fair, the whole point of this contest is to drum up more activity, but a lot of new threads and posts I've seen on here as of yesterday seem a bit contrived.

I think with this new contest, it's got most people a bit edgy and people are pointing fingers. Let's face it, myself, omega145, bmorr and others are consistently and have always consistently posted a lot since joining and in saying this, we stand to lose more than anyone else by saying this in that we're most likely to have won, even if you made this contest "top secret". Now there's an aura of paranoia and competition, and you've got people really scraping the barrel for new topics.

I almost feel like the Gold medal I got is more like the Mark of Cain now that I think about it. People will now be scrutinizing every post I made. I'm scared!!! LOL.

Nah, man. The true Arkers know who's legitimately here for the forum and who's here for the free prizes. Don't worry, man. Keep doing what you do. :)

Yeah I just figured that one out. Didn't realize that they increased the min. character limit

BAD IDEA!!!
The whole concept is not too impressive to me. I think this should be the one and only contest like this, as I don't like the points and "level". It takes away from the "genuine posts" and as one member said (I don't remember who exactly), it's making it a game.

I'm definitely in the same boat. I just logged in right now and had this message telling me about the multiple ways a person can be warned and eventually banned and it takes the fun out of the casual nature of this website. I go here for news and to talk my fave hobby with the fellow members here.

And I do think it will make people "edgy" as mentioned earlier on here. It'll make some people overthink when they post to the point where it might be a hassle and they'd rather not post instead. For example, I've deleted and rewritten this very post twice just to avoid "saying anything wrong."

Prizes and contests are fine, but not for one that dissects what everyone says and awards points and achievements based on people's conversations.

I don't see visiting this board as a game or competition. I see it as an escape and chance to relax from the real life games and competitions we have to deal with everyday.

Mine usually are too. 'cause I'm not prone to making posts if I have nothing to say, just to increase my post count. Likewise, if I have nothing to say, I just don't say anything.
However, I also like to politely acknowledge people with a thank you if they answer a question. Or if they find something I said funny, or to thank me or something.

I'm going to let everything settle down before I give any final judgements on this new game. But as of now, it's extremely disruptive to me in a number of ways beyond that.
So I'll wait until everyone settles down to see if that disruptiveness continues before I form my full opinions.
But today it's been annoying as all get out. I liked this site because it was slow. Not mindnumbingly slow, but slow enough to keep up with all topics I enjoyed. I could check in, leave for a few hours do other things, and come back and pick up again.

Wow, so if someone posts a question like "What does the regular movie Thor figure come with besides a hammer?"

The reply can't be "a sword"...it has to be like "The 2011 Hasbro Sword Spike Thor comes with a hammer and a sword that opens up."

This. This this this this.
And so I won't get in trouble because my character count is too small, this.
I couldn't possibly agree more.

I agree! This is a place for us to just enjoy talking with people who we share a hobby with when we have some spare time in the day. It's making friends and having friends, nothing complicated.

And when they do inform you that "The 2011 Hasbro Sword Spike Thor comes with a hammer and a sword that opens up," you then have to say "Thank you ever so much from the very lowest depths of my heart, I'm ever so grateful," or else it won't count.
 lol

I suggest after this trial month, the contest is discontinued for a month, and a poll put up, and allow the posters to voice if they enjoyed the contest or not, what changes they feel would/should be made if it continues.
I don't want to take away someone's fun, but for today this is taking away *my* fun. I would like to be able to shut it all off in my control panel and remove myself from the contest. And not be subjected to the same rules as the people playing the game. Just the typical board ettiquette most people try to follow no matter what board they post in.

Do Boy 08-30-2011 01:48 PM

Slow doesn't pay the bills. They need traffic to keep the site up and running. Forums aren't free, they cost money to keep. (Well some are free. But those aren't that great.)

You guys also realize 25 characters don't mean 25 words right? Not that hard to type out 25 characters.

Maybe there should be an option to remove yourself from Experience if you don't want to........experience it.

Yeah, but they also need time to build up as well. And there are probably other ways to get traffic up like getting interviews, exclusive news, and other contests based on other things but to at least enter a person has to have something like at least 50 posts and be a member for two months. With something like that, you announce it early and simply say that you can't troll or spam and that will encourage people to actually contribute. (Keep in mind these are just ideas off the top of my head)

But in the end people should want to post because they want to post, not because they're something physical in return.

It can be, when all you have/need to say is simple "Thank you." Stretching that out further makes you sound either insanely overly grateful, or sarcastic. And not acknowledging someone's help because the appropriate responce is too short is just aweful.

I can see where that would get annoying. But like they have said many times. It's just a beta. Let them work out the kinks.

ORIO 08-30-2011 02:30 PM

This is awesome! I needs me a Sentinel and I've been needing to post up over here more anyway :)

Well, I said earlier that I'm not going to form a full opinion (Or at least I'm genuinely trying not to) until everything calms down and this stops being new for everyone. Then I think I could make one that's more fair, than just the first 24 hours.

scarecrow 08-30-2011 02:38 PM

Sigh, guess I'm dragged back to commenting on here heh. This is a neat little thing.. I'll probably have more fun trying to keep up than trying to win.

Yeah man. Get your ass back posting on here!!!!!!!!!

neatogecko 08-30-2011 03:11 PM

I enjoy posting and reading the posts on here and I have for a couple of years now. Marvel Universe is my favorite toy line and this is the best place I have found on the web to talk about it. I don't post nearly enough to ever win, and I don't really have the time or desire to try. But if someone wins some cool swag by posting a bunch, hey, all the better!

thechris 08-30-2011 03:42 PM

I'm sure everything will resolve itself. We're worrying over nothing, most likely. :)

Tiberius 08-30-2011 03:57 PM

As of now, Toyark seems TO active, I dunno, just seems harder to keep up now.

Enigma2K2 08-30-2011 08:20 PM

I turn my back for one minute... ONE MINUTE... and you guys are up to something else!!!

I hope not all of the "newbs" get grouped together with those people that would fall into that category. Hell, had I known about this place sooner then I did, I've been on TFW for awhile now, I would have joined up long ago. There are a bunch of good posters here and they generally seem like good people. I'm really enjoying the new community, prizes are just a perk to meeting new friends:)
