In defense of some managers in positions like I am, even if you'd like to give a higher raise to your employee or even some sort of raise, HR and other higher ups might decide that they arent able to give raises or if they can, then they can only give it at a certain incremement. A speech can be the only motivation that a manager can give if he is in that position.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, I haven't read this thread in a while. The place I worked at had a lot of creeps in management, and for a long time they were hiring on young, naive woman to take advantage of. Most of this girls were underage, and they were tricked into a false sense of comfort by the people around them so that they would hook up with the management. It was really sickening, and at one point a guy working there took a naked picture of himself at work, then posted it on craigslist inviting a man and women to come to his work to have sex with him. Even the GM found out about it, but they did nothing. Since they already suspended me I told them I quit, and I turned over a lot of dirt on them in order to protect the girls that work there. Apparently if you work there you can't do anything about it, but if you quit they have to listen to you.

Was that person at your work name sandusky?

Yeah, that whole Penn State thing is terrible. I think it is good that these horrible fuckers are being called out, but something as big as that Penn State scandal just overshadows what I tried to do for the girls I used to work with. I just hope that since I reported it prior to the release of the Penn State scandal that those girls will still see some justice after all of this settles.

This is true.

Often times for every person you wish to acknowledge with soething extra you most also find someone to scrutinize and give less to in order to average it all out.

Doing the latter is very difficult, because any time you penalise someone you must back it up with paperwork documenting each instance of poor performance justifying the lower percentage increase.

taking that position imo is clearly a power move, but we wont get into that, imo ALL workers at a buisness are the same, they just hold titles which in the end are mere words and nothing more, along with their "speeches".

I'm going to have to disagree here, as I don't believe in absolutes.

Some workers with the title of "manager" actually do manage the other team members they've bee entrusted to manage.

Some of those managers do mean it when they tell their employees they've done a good job.

DOOMTRON, do you not like your boss or something? If so, then I can appreciate where your comming from. I've worked for a few doozies in my time. I usually take that as a cue its time to find a new job.

I do not like anyone in a position of power per say,and I dont mean the person in general as much as the title and the curruption it breeds,no this does not reflect my boss,it reflects ALL people who take that position, its their choice, doesnt mean I have to like it though, but who cares in the end it matters not.

He is rated the same way, and raises are most likely given as a percentage of gross yearly income.

Their review proccess is likely crafted to ressemble a bell curve with the majority of the employees all getting the same precentage raise: new boss included.

10% of the work force (again bosses included) probably gets 1% more than everyone else, and 10% probably get 1% less than everyone else.

This is most likely how it actual works. So really, reccognition is all his boss can give, and likely all they got.

For Fedex Office (my branch) you can earn up to a dollar a year, assuming your Performance Appraisal is alml "5"s.

So it's like this- two years ago, they announced that NO ONE gets ariase because the econemy tanked. "Not even the CEO!" they crowed- as though a multimillionaire was hurting come rent time.
Then last year they decided that, gosh, since the company is still crazy protitable, hey'll give out a raise...of 2%- to everyone, regardless of performance. So the jackass that was caught sleeping every week and did dick, got the same raise I did.
Nice.
My last raise was all 5's in every category and I even turned down promotion due to a medical issue that I schedule around.

Then this year, we get a new store manager just two months before appraisals (the old boss becoming a distict manager) ...and she gave every person the exact same score and raise- all 3's for everything and -suprise!- a crappy thirty cent raise.

For the record, the cost of living here in south Florida went up over 4% last year and this year looks to be as bad.

But hey, the comments were glowing! She was even upset that I skipped to the end and just signed the thing- telling her that her high opinion means nothing to the bill collectors....and I used to be that employee that went waaay over expectations while so amny other just did the minimum.

But they got the same raise I did three years running so who's the fool, right?

Add to all this that she's eliminated any overtime in the store and I'm projecting making about five grand less this year than last...but she wonders wh the store is losing customers...duh! Pissed off employees equal bad service and screwed up orders, which leads to less customers, less productivity and less money...

That's pretty ignorant to say IMO. Any person in a position of power is involved in corruption and reflects all people? Damn I guess myself and others who are managers, supervisors and lead are real scumbags.
Last time I checked thats considered advancing your career path.

so now we are calling names are we?look bro,I can have an opinion even if it does not settle well with you,if you cant digest my view ignore it,but do not sit here and police me on everything I say,its laughable at worst and irritating at best,I will not speak any further on the subject so as not to take away from the thread, get off my ass and back on topic!

He didn't call you names. He said you were ignorant. I like you, D00MTR0N, but I've got to agree. That's a pretty narrowminded view of people. I've had great bosses and I've had terrible bosses. I've been a grunt and I've been in charge. In any company, someone has to be in charge and when that job gets too big a job, sub-groups of management are created. I'd also like to remind you that this thread was "What do you do for a living?" not "What is your opinion about workplace hierarchy." so I guess we're all getting off topic...

Not everyone gets corrupted by power. In fact, a lot of people have great relationships with their managers. It's easy to sling mud at your own boss when he makes a decision you may not necessarily agree with, but to sling mud at everyone in a management position is ignorant. You made an opinion about a position that incidentally targetted everyone in an employed leadership position.

Perhaps if you worded it like, "I don't like managers who are tyrants. In my experience, those who I have worked under have been tyrants.", that would have certainly been more well received. If anyone were to say, "All fans of Dr. Doom are idiots and bad people on the basis that 5 people I've met who like Dr. Doom have been complete jerks. It must be that someone who likes traditional villain characters is inherently evil and stupid." and was completely serious, I'm sure you would chime in with your opinion about how ones interest in a fictional villain character would not automatically corrupt ones own values nor would it impact ones intelligence.

D00MTR0N 11-15-2011 06:45 PM

nope,if you thought me a jerk or idiot then so be it,I wont lose an ounce of sleep over it nor will I change my point of view, key word here is MY,call it ignorant if you will,if people would stop caring so much what others thought of them and worried about themself there would be alot less drama,I only got bent cause omega and his "manager type attitude" feels the need to police people, and therein lies my argument,he admitted to being a manager and who is the first one always correcting people and complaining about stuff, ding ding, thanks for proving my point, now please drop it,no one will win this.

Pffft. Whatever, man. What do I expect from a Latverian Goat Herder...

Tiberius 11-15-2011 08:05 PM

Supervisors/Managers have paid their dues to get to where they are, it's just how things work. Who knows what kind if shit Omega had to deal with with his superiors to get to where he is today. Power doesn't always corrupt, but it can get to peoples heads.

CLASSIFIED 11-15-2011 08:19 PM

Being a manager, especially a middle manager, is actually the hardest job there is out there.

Not only do you have to take shit from your boss, but you also have to take shit from your employees, and customers as well.

Your boss tells you everyone is going to get a 2% raise this year, or no raise at all, and then sends you off to go and inform your staff.

And who do you think they blame? That's right you.

You try to smooth things over by recognizing them the only way you can and they complain that they didn't get any money, or you don't and they complain that you could have at least written them a nice review.

They view you as courupt, egotistical, power hunger, and some how making all the money/ taking all the credit that is rightfully theirs, while meanwhile you just want them to be happy and feel appreciated.

And guess whose ass is on the line if your employees don't produce: that's right yours!

You guessed it; I am a manager.

Now stop fucking around and get back to work.

D00MTR0N 11-15-2011 08:28 PM

well if my comment offended any of you my bad,I was just giving my opinion but again I said its not the individual as much as the title that is bunk to me.

DogFashionDisco 11-15-2011 08:55 PM

I think we should all just watch the movie Horrible Bosses and call it a day.

Parts of that movie was a good flick. Mainly the parts with Jennifer Aniston acting real nasty... in a good way. Also, CLASSIFIED hit the nail right on the head about the middle management role. It's like a certain indecent act that involves two well endowed males and some human recepticle in between. It really doesn't feel good.

I enjoyed the whole film, and I thought the characters were pretty wild. Plus, Charlie Day is hilarious.
