They should have at least made the infamous Arab henchman that got shot by Indy in the faceoff. I guess towelhead + sword is too racist for Disney now.

IzzyTipsy 04-13-2023 01:35 PM

4 Indys in a wave with a new female and a kid. This wave screams "PEGWARMER THAT KILLS THE LINE".

But at least fans can enjoy when Indy in various states of undress and age fought, uh, older white guy in a suit, older white guy in a suit, older white guy in a suit, and Mads Mikkelson who is also probably gonna be in a suit.

THRILLING.

And no overt Nazis, no Thugees, no South Americans...

Dolemite 04-13-2023 02:33 PM

Never thought the day would come where we'd have a Denholm Elliott action figure, lol.

Skoob 04-13-2023 02:41 PM

Facepalm.

The fact they played Sympathy For the Devil in a gosh-dang Indiana Jones movie trailer shows me they don't know why people actually like the original trilogy, and that they're trying to market it as (or worse, it'll end up being) some Marvel-style quip fest with worse writing than a DeviantArt fanfiction

I am reasonably certain that Disney and Hasbro did not consider making that figure and then decided against it because it would be too racist.

I am entirely certain that the term "towelhead" is racist, however.

I wish they had made more enemies, but I am surprised they're launching this line with so many figures. I know that 70% of them are Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr. but that's to be expected.

No toymaker is going to make products with Nazi iconography on them in this age unless Kanye West performs a hostile takeover and becomes CEO.

Maybe Hasbro will make some "German Soldiers".
Doubtful, but possible.

My thoughts exactly. That is an absolutely terrible musical selection, and it looks like they're once again pushing the Mary Sue 'anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better' formula. Indy will be depicted as the doddering old geriatric who depends on his goddaughter to 'get things done.' Critical Drinker is going to have a field day with this.

Damn it. There must be some property that Disney isn't trying to chew up and spit out.

Edit: goddaughter, not granddaughter (whatever)

DtLS 04-13-2023 09:50 PM

Am I missing something? Why is the Indiana Jones (Cairo) a $33.99 msrp? Nothing they'd listed as coming with that figure should justify a deluxe pricetag.

I made a similar post in one of the Star Wards threads about why there might be more sensitivity around certain subjects than in years past, attempting some sort of context.

I think most of you know the answer unless anybody wants to deny that (in this case) there is less overt xenophobia and white nationalism attitudes in public discourse than the last time we got figures of Mola Ram, Colonel Vogel, etc. which would make producing figures of dark-skinned foreign adversaries and uniformed Nazis a touchier subject.

I don't know what else to tell you guys. [shrug emoji]

Last time they made them was 2008. Pretty sure there was ALOT of overt white nationalism and shit when a black man was running for President.

Tucker Carlson doesn't hold a candle to Rush, for example.

deecee4 04-14-2023 06:01 AM

Yeah, the music thing doesnt bother me too much since that seems to be how modern movies are marketed these days (still don't know why Whole Lotta Love was used for DnD aside from the unintentionally meta, thieving connection). Seems like if they heavily used the Williams stuff, its pandering fan service, if they use something different altogether people complain that it's not William's lol. So can't win either way.
I dont know...hope the movie doesn't suck.

oh yeah, obviously it's not like this stuff wasn't visible in the US before, say, 2015. maybe Disney doesn't think the national 'vibe' has improved since then therefore they don't want to be selling those sorts of characters as toys.

I'm just speculating on what their reasons might be. as of right now I'm not in charge of deciding what Star Wars/Indians Jones figures get made. would be a good question to ask those people who are in charge though.

Wait it out. Most of this you can wait out. It'll be gathering dust in a few months. The line has no legs, especially if it turns out they are too sheepish to make most of the villains.

I hate to agree with that assessment. Trust me, I like Indiana Jones and I want the line to do well, but when you're making 4 Indys in a wave of 6 figures, and this is only wave 2, you can tell they're really running out of ideas. Too many of Indy's enemies are not PC to make now, and he doesn't have that many allies. It was pretty much an Indy show. There are only 5 movies to pull from, no cartoons, no Disney + type of shows (unless you count that short lived young Indiana Jones show). All that adds up to not enough contents to support this line for too long.

It's the other way around. "Respectable" public discourse has become increasingly (one might even say hysterically) xenophilic while the propagandist class touts the idea that erasing white characters from the public view is a moral triumph.

We're actually getting most villains:

Raiders villains:
Belloq, has figure
Toht, has figure
Dietrich, no figure
66% villain rate

Crusade villains:
Donovan, has figure
Schneider, has figure
Vogel, no figure
Kazim, has figure, debatable villain status
66% villain rate, 75% if you include Kazim

Temple villains:
Mola Ram, no figure
0%

Two waves in and we already have most of the original trilogies villains out or announced, I do not see how that can be considered as inadequate. I would like to see Dietrich and Vogel get figures, and I don't think it's impossible but I do think overt Nazi symbolism would and should be removed.

Let’s not employ projection to accuse others of propaganda, especially when there is an active discussion (both academically and societally) from which to draw factual conclusions.

Here’s a report from USC's school of journalism circa 2016 that could function as the basis for a mature and nuanced discussion about what’s actually happening in media:
https://annenberg.usc.edu/sites/defa...ec_Summary.pdf

(make a particular note of the metrics revolving around “prevalence on screen” regarding gender, race/ethnicity, and LGBTQ identification)

I wanted to introduce some data to counter the emotionally based narrative that white characters are disappearing; reality seems to say otherwise.

lordbest 04-17-2023 05:23 AM

To apply the above to the context here, Dial of Destiny, according to the starring character list on Lucasflim.com, is 82% white and 82% male.

Hasbro sent through a promo mailer for the first waves of stuff hitting about now.

I dig Indy, got a couple 6 inch on order, but glad that full Ark is here now. That's getting stolen by Cobra for their shelves now. :)

Harbinger 04-21-2023 02:04 PM

Hasbro will never learn. Making all that retro and chibi gimmicky crap is just a waste as that shit cloggs pegs even at discount stores. You would think that at some point hasbro would realize this but i giess there heads are permanently affixed in their assholes.

Tony_Bacala 04-21-2023 03:02 PM

I buy some of the retros for star wars, since I don't do tvc. The kids stuff I have no scope on, I assume the young ones dig it cuz they keep pushing it out. Kids toys seem to skew much younger than what it was in the 80s and 90s. It's like preschool plus. Then right to collector level. No in-between. They conceded to PlayStations and ipads for the 6-15 age range I guess.
