I've read Marvel and DC since I was in grade school, I actually like a lot of the stuff marvel is doing now if you have given up reading marvel I think secret wars is a great place to jump back on. I'm not sure if I should go the digital route or keep my paper comics/ TPBs. Also did anyone here see this cover? I love how the artist based it off of the first MU female buck: http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/...s7cph6pkd.jpeg |
They also used actual accessories too, I mean the only thing unique to that Moonstar would be the Head and Crown....too easy lets give them worse/less for more, Perfect!

X-23 to Wolverine has been hinted at since Claremont first used her in Uncanny X-Men right after NYX. Her entire character basis is the Wolverine trope but inverted. So it's Kimura as sabretooth and Laura as wolverine. That's always been the dynamic, now it's the dynamic in title name too. That was also hinted at right after the AvX event anyway. In the X-Men anniversary story when the future X-Men came back, Jubilee is using Wolverine's name. Which shows in the future it has become a mantle. X-23 taking over the name is the natural extension of that, and sets the stage for questions about how long her tenure will be before Jubilee gets the mantle or if that future was entirely re-written. The new Thor is epic, and has had groundwork down for it since the 90s, possibly the 80s. Factoring in the Thor corps, and it's a natural story evolution from previous history. "Thor" has been a mantle since Beta Ray Bill. So if an alien horse can be Thor, why can't a woman? Don't forget about Dargo Ktor either. Dargo was Thor and that was decades ago. With continuity, this is actually a genius move because it places the new Thor as someone that could go to Valhalla where before they might not have, which adds more future story potential too. (Which is why it's not Sif or Valkyrie. Though they may get their own titles later, especially if Sif keeps picking up popularity like she has been thanks to the movies.) New Cap. No one complained about Bucky anywhere near as much as Sam Wilson, and while Bucky is Rogers' legacy in many ways, so is Sam Wilson. Both have been partners for about an equal length of time and had Steve's personal stamp of approval. Though I would like to see Romanoff take on the mantle at some point in the future(that'd be interesting because it works on multiple story character internal conflict levels). Sharon Carter is likely the next candidate for the same reason Sam Wilson and Bucky were. New Hulk makes sense. That's a character that premiered in Banner's title, and is essentially a modern day Rick Jones. Could be interesting especially with the established character personality he has. New Spider-man is also pretty awesome. It gives Marvel what they want with a teen spidey, let's kids still have that title, and gives the older fans the continuing saga of an older peter parker. That's win win all around. Besides, the entire intent behind spider-man has always been that it could be anyone under the mask. Sam Raimi even made a point of that in the first spider-man movie when people argue over who he could be. Same to some animated appearances that did the same, among other comic stories too. It's also updating the original motif of the character conflict. Where before it was a bullied powerless nerd turned superhero, now it's more in line to modern standards and relatable because of the more modernized dynamics and universalities it uses to keep up with the times. The nerd v jock bullying paradigm has died down from what it was to the point it's not as relevant anymore in the modern world for stories that are geared to draw in modern youth. Ms. Marvel makes sense in the modern world and with how it built up. That's literally the best candidate for that mantle and it's not like Carol kept the mantle intact anyway. She went by Warbird, Binary, and more. She's been trying to get rid of that name for awhile and the new character using it fits really well for it as well as has a pretty devoted readership now. Probably helps that her comic is good. Captain Marvel makes sense. I mean that's literally how Carol got her powers. Though the downgrade in rank is a little confusing because that was one of the fun things about her interactions with Captain America. That her military rank was above his. Kate Bishop Hawkeye is outright more fun than Clint. Plus I love the fact she's not giving up the name and even Captain America gave her the name during a time while Clint was MIA, and he gave up the name himself later to her when he was going by Ronin(was a great story to read too!). Kate, America Chavez, Nico, and X-23 though are my top faves out of Marvel so I might be biased. This also means more figures. A larger library of characters and designs to draw from for toys, games, tv, movies, and animation. Better marketing too. Carol's name change in particular makes her movie much easier to market now too. If good stories come out of it, and Marvel makes money off of it to keep making good stories, then there shouldn't be a problem. These shifts happen. Over with DC Alan Scott was green lantern, then Hal, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner. Batman has changed his mantle a few times whether it's Dick Grayson, Jean Paul Valley, or even Alfred. Before you crap on it, read it. If you're going to crap on it, at least have knowledge of the stories and back up your complaints with the work itself. Not hyperbole that's so far off base it's laughable. Quote:

I also wonder if some of the changes are so that they can keep the alternate/older versions. This way they can keep OML Clint Hawkeye and Kate bishop Hawkeye, old man Logan and x-23 as wolverine, and cho as hulk and banner as maestro. I also liked odenson running around with jarnborn and the Thorr unworthy hammer and foster with mjolnir. Miles morales IS NOT the same spiderman. Peter Parker dies in the ultimate universe and miles takes up the mantle. Does it really make sense to have a young and old Parker in the same universe? Then they would have had to do the DC thing with an earth 1 and 2 and kill off the old one. Some of these changes means we get different stories and versions of the same character in the toy line. As Julius Schwartz would say (God rest his soul) "every 10 years or so the comic book universe needs an enema." After 75+ years I'm not sure Marvel has ever really had one. |

The problem with destroying the multiverse in SW is the law of diminishing return. in the 30's 40's and 50's the villains were bank robbers and gangsters, then they upped the anti with super villains that wanted to rob banks and labs then, take over a city, then a country, then the world, that lead to cosmic threats like Galactus who wanted to eat our world, then Thanos who wanted to destroy the universe! now to draw a crowd you have to collapse the multiverse! at that point the surviving heroes should be literally fearless. you just survived an insane collapse of reality and the destruction and reconstitution of everything! it makes it a bit harder to care if a bank is being robbed.

Went to the lcs yesterday and saw this comic variant. While it looks kinda fake, it is a 100% real variant cover. Really cool seeing it in person.

With huge thanks to K-Dub, the Master of Time is now able to lounge in relaxation, unlike the rest of the rabble who remain forced to stand...

I just had a cool idea. What if Hasbro made an SDCC exclusive that was basically one of the variant covers with the figures on them except the figures were actually there. That would be pretty cool.

And that's a perfect way to say it about the industry. Though yeah, probably 15 years down the line, someone else will come up with some other major event idea that'll offset secret wars a bit to set up a new dynamic, it also depends on sales for how that new dynamic will take shape. Right now sales are strong. With strong sales, don't expect changes back anytime soon unless it goes with the story needed to be told. |
